JAMES GARNER’S TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the life and music of the legendary “Man in Black” with strong conviction and stunning accuracy. Garner and his band faithfully recreate Cash’s biggest hits and present historical accounts and personal anecdotes about America’s most beloved singing storyteller.

Since 2008, Garner and his band have performed more than four hundred professional shows, including a special show at Folsom State Prison in 2008 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Cash’s famous live album recorded behind prison walls. For a commemoration of a different nature, Garner and the band participated in an official unveiling of the Johnny Cash Forever Stamp with the local USPS Post Master in Claremont, California on June 5, 2013.

The musicians have recorded three albums: James Garner: A Musical Tribute to Johnny Cash (2009), Shades of Black (2012), and James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash: LIVE! (2015).

Recently, PBS member station KVIE aired Live in Concert! James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash, a one-hour feature of songs from a live theatre concert. A DVD of the full concert is in production and will be available on the CashTribute.net website in Spring 2017.

Today’s performance features Cash favorites such as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Ring of Fire,” along with other hits the country giant recorded and performed in a career that spanned six decades.

Enjoy this fun, toe-tapping trip down memory lane honoring Johnny Cash’s life and music, and the boom-chicka-boom sound of his longtime backing band, the Tennessee Three.

JAMES GARNER Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar

James Garner grew up on a cotton farm in Hanford, California, discovering Johnny Cash’s music after his dad saw the country legend in concert at the local Fox Theatre.

At the time, Garner didn’t know who Johnny Cash was because Cash didn’t have hits on the radio, Pandora and YouTube didn’t exist, and Garner’s parents didn’t own any Cash records. One day Garner, his mom, and his brother were at the Sam Goody music store in Visalia, California. His mom said Garner and his brother could each pick out a tape. Intrigued by a country superstar coming to his hometown, Garner chose Johnny Cash: Giant Hits.

As they drove home, Garner put his new tape in the cassette player of the family car and out rang a single note in time: the beginning of “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town.” Then came the big voice and for the next two and a half minutes, Garner was mesmerized by the story of a young cowboy named Billy Joe. Where had this music been all his life? There was meaning to it and the music was sparse, like nothing else Garner had ever heard. So began his journey of getting his hands on all things Johnny Cash.

By age twelve, Garner had learned most of Cash’s hits. A few years later, Cash played the Tower Theatre in Fresno, California, where Garner saw him in concert and met him backstage following the show. “Shaking hands with Johnny Cash is still one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had,” says Garner.

Against that backdrop, Garner and his band proudly present the music of Johnny Cash as fans, for fans.

with Ghanaian master, Bernard Woma.

Auriemmo completed a year of graduate work at the University of Hartford, studying Middle Eastern frame drumming with four-time Grammy winner Glen Velez. Auriemmo earned his master of music degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, in percussion performance and pedagogy, and was a member of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Beloit Symphony, and several local bands.

Currently a resident of Lodi, California, Auriemmo has performed with the Sacramento, Modesto, and Stockton Symphonies, and has played musical productions with the Stockton Civic Theater and Sacramento Music Circus.

Auriemmo successfully captures the energy and distinctive style of Cash’s only drummer, W.S. Holland, in this show. Auriemmo’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: “Cocaine Blues.”

DENNY COLLERETLead Guitar and Vocals

Denny Colleret was born in Montreal, Canada, and learned to play guitar as a kid by picking up the needle on Johnny Cash records and replicating what he heard. When he met Johnny Cash at the screening of the country star’s film, The Gospel Road, in 1973, Colleret could already nail Luther Perkins’ signature guitar sound and style.

He studied music education at Solano College, and since 1978, has played country guitar in a number of successful bands, opening for Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Doug Kershaw, and other country acts.

Colleret has recorded two albums featuring his singing and guitar playing: Trains Go By and Sixteen Songs. He also performs a solo country program at senior resident centers across northern California.

Colleret’s uncannily accurate guitar work in this show pays tribute to Cash’s classic boom-chicka-boom sound. Colleret’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: “Sunday Morning Coming Down.”

RICK DUNCANBass and Vocals

Born and raised in Stockton, California, Rick Duncan began his studies at San Joaquin Delta College with Phil Karp, principal bass player for the San Francisco Symphony. After honing his bass playing technique by training with bassist Gary Karr at the University of Hartford, he finished his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, with private instruction from S. Charles Siani, principal bassist with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra.

A member of the Stockton Symphony since 1977, he has performed with Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow, Carol Channing, and other musical greats. Duncan also owns Nacnud Sound, a professional recording studio in Lodi, California, where he’s worked with Huey Lewis, Jefferson Starship, and members of Tower of Power.

Duncan’s expressive playing in this show provides the same critical foundation Marshall Grant supplied to Cash from the very beginning. Duncan’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: “Folsom Prison Blues.”
