Principal Report - Mr Schneider

The Trial Higher School Certificate Examinations will be held from Monday August 15 until August 26. For many students this will be their last assessment task prior to their actual Higher School Certificate Examinations which will begin in October. Some students have project based works that need to be submitted by the dates which have been determined by the Board of Studies so that external marking can occur. I have had the opportunity to view a number of these projects and have been impressed by the talents and skills of the students. I was particularly disappointed at not being able to attend the Senior CAPA Night due to illness as I have already witnessed the extremely high standard of this group of students and was looking forward to this event. I acknowledge and thank all staff who willingly give of their time outside of school hours to support students in the completion of these projects and in providing study and review sessions. At our Assembly on Tuesday we had the General Manager of Richmond Valley Council, Mr Vaughan MacDonald and two council employees who are past Casino High School students, Reece Andrews and Shannon Wheeler, address the Assembly. We are fortunate to have a progressive council who have and are seeking to employ from our Casino Youth. We also recognised the talents of Lara Close who came 4th at the National Dance competition for Hip Hop. Congratulations Lara!

Welcome back to Term 3 and our first newsletter for the term. Highlights in recent weeks include a big win for Casino High School in the recent debating challenge, excellent results from our show team at the EKKA, fantastic representation at the Zone Athletics Carnival and outstanding performances from our students during NOMADS (Night of Music, Art and Drama) and the Senior CAPA night along with much, much more.

Thank you for your attendance at the recent Year 7-12 Parent/Teacher interviews. We hope you found the evening informative and an opportunity to partner with the teachers in supporting your child’s education. It was great to see so many parents/carers in attendance and making that extra effort to communicate with their child’s teachers.

We wish Year 12 all the best in their coming Trial HSC Examinations and encourage you to call the school with any enquiries you may have.

Learning is a core value of Casino High School. Educational research tells us that attendance is one of the key indicators of successful learning. It is a priority to have students in class at all times. This includes arriving to school on time and getting to class on time. We ask for your support as parents and carers to partner with us to get students to school by 8.50am ready for roll call at 9.00am. This will enable students to make a positive start to learning each day.

Enjoy reading about all the things our students are accomplishing at Casino High School.

The Year 8 Debating team have won another round in the Premier’s Debating Challenge by successfully arguing that ‘Governments should not place a curfew on Teenagers’. The team convincingly defeated Woodenbong Central School and look forward to their next debate against Richmond River High School. Watch this space! Mrs Muller

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE AT SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY A fantastic day was had by all! The chosen few representing this fine bastion of education and discipline went to Southern Cross University on Thursday 23rd of June to participate in the Science and Engineering Challenge and to have a bit of fun. The morning session was dominated by two teams, the first being the blue team of Zeike Thompson-Warne, Callum MacIntosh and Casey Davidson. They gave the other 8 teams in the competition a damn good thrashing in the “Stringways” challenge. This group also continued to dominate in the afternoon session “Clutching at Straws” with Callum’s design for the fingers of an artificial hand being one of the most successful. The other driving force of excellence was Isabella Carey and Kylie Baker who provided an extremely well designed and built tower in the “Helter Skelter” challenge to bring Casino High School some valuable points. During this time, Paddy O’Brien and Sarra Wall showed the competition that if you want a catapult built properly then get Casino High School students to do it. Not only did it throw a tennis ball a long way, but it was accurate as well. Tim Rose and Braiden Needham showed that Casino High School’s motto of “Together We Excel” is alive and well with the pair of them demonstrating fantastic teamwork in their “ElectaCity” task, where they had to provide electricity to as much of the city as possible at the lowest cost using different types of cables. Eli Harper and Angus Patton proved to be a formidable pair with their robust and well executed suspension system complete with clever steering mechanism. William Smith and Matt Bradshaw did the hard graft, constructing a hovercraft while Bryce Watson and Josh Owen supervised and provided much needed advice, sanity and serenity. The bridge building team of Mick Haynes, Zebidiah Thomas, Liam Hadley and Tim Solomon had a fantastic design for a light yet strong bridge, they worked as a well-oiled machine and planned their time well making sure that they thought through their design thoroughly. They showed the rest of the schools how to go about building a bridge in a professional and disciplined manner. As a result of all this Casino High School were in 3rd place at lunchtime with it all to play for. Haylee Bruggy and Chelsea Coughran set a cracking pace in the “Stringways” challenge, Casino High School were unstoppable, however the students lost their vim and vigour of the morning session and slipped down the leader board. Everyone who took part had a good go, the level of commitment, dedication and team work was better than anything that I have ever witnessed. It made one proud to be a member of this fine School. Fantastic, marvellous, superb, smashing, wonderful, excellent, fabulous, terrific. The students enjoyed learning the Science behind the challenges in a hands on way. R. MACQUARIE SCIENCE PROGRAM What an amazing opportunity for Casino High School to participate in a program that inspires discovery. These students were sad they could only stay for one lesson. We are all looking forward to Macquarie University coming next year!

Discovering why we need to wash

our hands carefully.

What better way to learn than through

doing.

Learning how to feed the calves was another highlight. We are so thankful to James who shares his time and expertise with us.

We are so excited about the read-a-thon and have all joined.

Term 3 in Support H we started with a very

exciting project. The class bought a new

chicken incubator. James from Ag gave us 12

fertile eggs, 20 days later our first chicken

was born. On the 21st day 4 more hatched

and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of

the other 7. As a class project we learnt

about chicken incubation and built a house

for the chickens using recycled materials.

STAFF AND STUDENTS

STAFF VS YEAR 12 BASKETBALL MATCH Year 12 took on the Staff this week in a Basketball match as part of the Sporting Challenges. With the students leading 2-1 on the sports played so far, they were determined to get further in front but the teachers had other plans and a surprise guest appearance by Mr George boosted their hopes. The Staff were just too strong for Year 12 and they dominated throughout the match. Staff eventually winning 45-19 to level the scores with the next sporting match due to take place in a few weeks time as Year 12 prepare for their trial exams. Special mention goes to Adan Reynolds who scored the only three-pointer of the match late in the second half. Thank you to both Staff and students for participating and to Mr Fryer for umpiring. We look forward to seeing how this year’s Challenge will pan out later in the term.

CONGRATULATIONS LARA

On Saturday 6th August Lara Close participated in the TFT Dance National Championships. Her journey to Nationals started during Term 1 with a virtual entry. This entailed her routine being developed, practiced, recorded and then sent away to a panel of judges. She was successful in winning her heat and was awarded a gold medal as the State Champion for the Somewhere Down Under Series. Lara was then invited to attend the National Championships at the Gold Coast Exhibition Centre. Lara competed in the Up Beat Junior Solo section against girls from South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria who were all from schools with renowned dance expertise. Lara danced beautifully and came 4th with a Commendable Effort. Congratulations Lara!

On the 29th July, Casino High School had 14 student volunteers to assist with the running of the Casino Community of Small Schools annual Athletics Carnival at Queen Elizabeth Park. Students assisted the primary school teachers with running of field and track events, timing and distribution of ribbons. The carnival included Stratheden, Manifold, Mummulgum, Doubtful Creek, Leeville and Rappville Public Schools. Many of the Casino High School volunteers were graduates of the primary schools involved and was a great

opportunity for them to catch up with their primary teachers. We received excellent feedback from the teachers involved and the Casino Community of Small Schools are very appreciative of the assistance provided by Casino High School students. Well done!
