This year’s C-Factor was a highly entertaining evening as always, bringing together the best acts as well as some slightly crazy ones all in the name of entertainment.

The show opened with a highly entertaining video of compères Karina and Rich with their Gangster Rap. These two really held the show together. This was followed by a fabulous performance from last year’s winner Lily.

There were plenty of singing acts this year, all worthy of a mention. There was Beth, accompanied by Bonnie on guitar, and Adie, also on guitar with Ron taking the lead vocals. Tom the Big Banana’s strange name had us a little worried as to what his act would be but he had a wonderful Michael Buble-like voice. Andrew Francis did a Neil Diamond tribute act which got all the audience singing ‘Sweet Caroline’. Piano Man, with all his energy and the Verb backing him was

another great hit, with the audience singing along to ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, by Queen. Then there was David Westbury who dressed as a bear and sang ‘Bear Necessities’, much to the children’s amusement.

Roy and June Partridge proved that the art of storytelling still exists in Cassington with a quirky story about gardening and a beautiful poem.

But the pick of the bunch was Madeline Wilson who at the very young age of 13 bravely sang a cappella and brought the house down.

Appreciation should go to the judges again this year: Carl Osgathorpe, Sarah Airy, Selfy, and newcomer Ellen O’Donnell, whose act, Madeline, won the prestigious trophy.

St Peter’s Bell FairMany thanks to all those who organised events and refreshments for the Bell Fair on 26th October to celebrate the return of the church bells, especially to the Hatwell family for the fair on the green. The trips up the bell tower proved very popular and we are aware that a number of people who wanted to see the bells were unable to do so because of the lengthy waiting list.

We tried to get as many people up as we could and did not want to rush the tour so if you were one of the unlucky ones and would still like to visit to see the bells then please give your name and phone number to Keith Turner (tel 880492) and he will contact you when an alternative date is arranged.

St Peter’s Church/The Friends of St Peter’s

... and here’s what one impressed villager thought

Keith Turner and Alan Thornton spent all day showing more than 100 people around the church tower and belfry, answering every question. Their extensive knowledge of the history was amazing. Only a handful of people ever get to go up the tower but this tour let everyone see where all the fundraising money had been spent. A big thank you to all concerned, especially Keith and Alan. It was lovely to hear the bells on Sunday morning – what a treat to wake up to.

Colin Grant 1935–2013

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Colin Grant, who passed away on 16th September after a long period of ill-health. Colin was born in Rose Hill in 1935 and

was one of eight brothers and sisters. Down the years Colin had a few jobs, plus a few years national service in the RAF, but principally worked as a pipe fitter and heating engineer for 40 years at Aldens Heating in Oxford. He met Jean, a Cassie girl, at a dance in Yarnton and they were married here in 1961, with son Nick arriving on the scene nine years later. Upon moving to the village Colin soon acquainted himself with the Red Lion, becoming a regular renowned for his sense of humour, dart playing prowess and stories of DIY ventures. In addition he would often treat himself to a pint or two! For those of us who attended his service, tales of his driving instructor skills and his spare-time role as cycling proficiency monitor brought a smile to our faces, as did his final service song – the perfect reminder of Colin and his take on life.

From all at the Red Lion

YES!England are off to Brazil for the World Cup finals!

Rooney and Gerrard secured our place, scoring against Poland to somehow put us top of our group to qualify.

BUT ‘rose coloured spectacles’, and even memories of ’66 do not alter the fact that the English team is not even seeded in the top 8 for the tournament. But, “Who knows?” Roy Hodgson says. “It’s not always the best team that wins”.

There will be hope in our best players and memories of that former glory. There will be triumphant cheers at great goals – and deep despair at ‘easy’ goals missed – and those given away. And don’t forget the almost inevitable penalty shootout(s).

I really love that Mars advertisement (first shown to coincide with Euro 2012) where one of the stewards, just helping England’s injured goal keeper off the pitch comes on to save the penalty shootout.

(Having just taken a bite of his Mars bar of course!)Recently we were reminded in a church talk at St Peter’s

(given by Margaret Thornton) that being a fan or a spectator is not the same as taking part in the game. OK, in reality the steward in the Mars advertisement would not have been

allowed to take the role of goal keeper in the shootout but it does make the point – are we just armchair supporters? Each of us does have something to contribute.

It’s easy to be just a ‘fan’ of Jesus Christ but we, like the first disciples are not called to be just fans, or supporters, but to follow him as participants in his life, his death and in his resurrection.

Being a participant in Christ’s kingdom may not be easy. We may not even feel that we are ‘seeded’ in the ‘tournament’ but Jesus just says ‘follow me’. Not that we get our salvation by scoring the ‘goals’ of our own actions but through his grace as we follow.

Thank God “It’s not always the ‘best’ team that wins.”

Darts marathonIn aid of Cancer Research UKFrom Friday 11th October at 8pm until Saturday 12th at 8pm the Red Lion Ladies’ Darts team held a 24-hour darts marathon in aid of Cancer Research UK. Tracy, June, Pauline, Amanda, Anita, Pat and Aly all stayed the full 24-hours, with Simone, Courtney, Ben and Gary also joining in at various points. By the end of the feat the team was on a high, knowing they’d beaten their target of raising £1000 for the charity.

The ladies (and gents) would like to thank everyone who came along and supported, some even staying with them over night to keep them going. Bill and Jan were generous hosts as ever and Lisa provided a great breakfast in the morning.

The Royal British Legion poppy appeal 2013

This year Remembrance Sunday falls on 10th November. The annual poppy appeal house to house collection takes place during the period running up to that day. During that time authorised collectors who are well known to most of you will be calling.

Last year the appeal raised over £1000 in Cassington and Worton. May I, on behalf of the Royal British Legion, thank all of you who so generously supported the appeal last year and may we continue to rely on your generosity again this year.

Today it is still in the public mind that our forces unfortunately continue to suffer casualties, resulting in the Legion being increasingly called upon to give support to bereaved families, and to those who are severely injured. Costs to do this are continually escalating. The Royal British Legion does not advocate war or glorify it, but attempts to relieve the suffering caused by it.

Sunday 10th November

The usual nondenominational remembrance service will be held at Cassington War Memorial commencing at 10.45am. Everyone is invited to this short service, which follows immediately after the service at St Peter’s Church. Please do not leave cars near the memorial at this time.

Monday 11th November – Remembrance Day

A two-minutes’ silence will be observed nationwide at 11am

Raleigh International update

Hello Cassington,Here is just a quick update on what I have been doing

recently …I have now raised over half of my target amount and

donations are still coming in, which is great! As Christmas is quickly approaching I have been

designing slate plaques and other Christmas gifts, which will be sold at the St Peter’s Christmas Fayre. I have also been busy collecting raffle prizes from local businesses, which can be won at the Oxfordshire Judo competition in Witney on 24th November.

Other events I have planned include a colouring competition for the children at St Peter’s, as well as a teddy tombola, which will also be at the Christmas Fayre.

In November I am off to London for a three-day residential trip. I am really excited about this because it is where I will meet other people in my team and find out whereabouts in India I will be working.

If you would like to help me reach my target I would greatly appreciate it. You can donate online at www.justgiving.com/MadisonBakewell but I also accept cash donations, which you can drop off at my house (Lyme Regis, Bell Lane).

Your support really will make a difference,Thank you.

Sir Michael Sobell House, Churchill Hospital, Old Rd, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LE SMSH. [email protected]

What is the purpose of CAWN?Recently I received an email from a reader (a representative of several others) noting that I had requested correspondence and hoping that what he had written might provoke some response. On reading the article I realised that it was a strong criticism of one of the newsletter’s regular columns and its author. After some consideration I decided that the email was not suitable for publication and told my correspondent that, though it undoubtedly would have provoked a response, it was not in the spirit of the Cassington and Worton News, being a personal attack rather than simply a disagreement with a point of view. Later that week I received a note from the author of the regular column saying he had been told all about the emails between me and my correspondent and, though he thanked me for my defence of him, he was happy for me to go ahead and publish the email.

I feel therefore that I need to get a few things straight. When I requested correspondence I was hoping for letters that fall into one or more of the following categories:• They share with other readers items of interest or concern

to the village at large;• They give an insight into goings on at one of the many

clubs and societies Cassington is lucky to have;• They make a plea to villagers to help out, perhaps in some

charity endeavour;• They provoke lively debate about issues of relevance to the

whole village;• They relate an experience that has given you an insight

into the deeper meaning of life.

What I was not hoping for were letters that would start a battle of words between two individuals, which is of no interest to more than a handful of folks in Cassington. If you want to discuss this kind of issue please do it in person. When I decided not to publish the email in question I was doing it for the sake of the newsletter, its readers, and for anybody who might have been put off corresponding by the fear that they might receive a similar slating.

I hope I have made the right decision. For my part I will be endeavouring to stick more stringently to the guidelines I’ve given above and so I need to make potential writers aware that letters may well be edited in order to keep them relevant and interesting. I’d love to hear your views on this issue, or anything else pertinent to village life. Thanks to everybody who has contributed this month.

Birthstone – history and folkloreAs we walked into the meeting of 17th October we were met with a beautiful array of semi-precious

jewellery in the form of necklaces, bangles and earrings. These were categorised into groups, each group representing the twelve months of the year.

Our speaker was Ruth Orpan who has been studying and working with semi-precious stones for more than thirty years. Her passion for her subject was evident and as we settled into our seats, we were given a superb insight into her world of stones. As we worked through the months, she explained each stone to us. Each group of stones represented different aspects of life. Sheila Nelson gave the vote of thanks and then we broke for coffee.

We then started the business side of our meeting. Apart from various events, it was decided that owing to so many members and friends being unavailable to help, the November jumble sale should be cancelled. It was also noted that we will be holding our winter meal on Tuesday 21st January at the The Chequers.

Roald Dahl dayWe support many charities and this term we had a ‘dress up as a character from a Roald Dahl book’ day for charity. The whole school was taken over

by Charlies, Matildas, BFGs, etc (if you’re not sure who these characters are then best to read Roald Dahl’s books). From the donations received we made over £50.

Macmillan coffee morningThank you to everyone who came into school for coffee and cake. We made a generous £218 to support the work of the Macmillan nurses.

Nursery unitI am sure that if you have walked past the school you will have seen how well the building is taking shape. By the time this edition goes out we should have the roof on and the windows in. The build is on schedule and may even be slightly ahead. So far things have gone smoothly and we are looking forward to completion within the next three months.

Harvest Our harvest festival service, led

by Kath Cooke, took place at St Peter’s Church, with each class

playing its part. The youngest children, in Apple Tree Class, sang a song entitled ‘Big, Red Combine Harvester’ and showed a splendid painting to illustrate

their song. The year 2 class, Hazel Class, had composed

a harvest poem, which they shared. The oldest children read from the Bible and led the prayers whilst the lower juniors, Maple Class, performed a drama based on harvests now and in the past. They all worked together to mime a combine harvester and managed to turn themselves around by the font without losing anyone. Generous donations of produce were made by the children and their families. These donations were combined with those from the church and taken to The Porch, a charity that supports homeless people in Oxford.

The bellsThere was great excitement to see the bells returning to the church after the children had seen them off several months ago. Everyone lined up

to cheer them in and to congratulate the tireless workers who have done so much to get them back in working order. As I write this I can hear them ringing out above the sounds of the children.

Cycle trainingOur Year 6 children take part in a cycle training scheme led by the County Road Safety team and manned by volunteer parents. This course is run over five sessions, with the children learning the basics of ensuring that their bikes are roadworthy, appropriate clothing, including helmets, and how to keep safe on the road. I am pleased to say that all of the children who took the test passed.

Advance datesWe will be holding our own school remembrance service at the War Memorial on Monday 11th November at 10.45am. You are more than welcome to join us. On Saturday 16th November at 6pm we are hosting a Harvest Barn Dance and on Friday 13th December at 6pm we’ll have our Christmas Fayre.

Children who are due to start school in September 2014The closing date for online Primary School applications is 15th January 2014. If you wish to post your application please collect a form from the school office. If you would like to have a personal tour of the school and a chat with the Head Teacher please phone the school office.

The kindness of strangersFirst of all: a gripe. One very big annoyance is the car left down Conce Walk. Everybody seems powerless to move it. The same man has abandoned a BMW in the Chequers car park. Surely there should be some means of removal; the one on Parish Council property is untaxed, with no insurance, but these folk just laugh it off. The situation just does not seem right to me.

However, I also have cause to be grateful for the kindness of strangers. Recently June and I broke down and, with no mobile reception, were wondering how we would get help. Fortunately a Laura Ashley delivery driver stopped and called the police for us. The two officers were both very helpful and got the AA out for us – he was a very efficient man, who towed us home.

I expect I will not be the only one to thank all the folk who helped in the Bell Tower; the same as the people who help with the War Memorial. This, combined with our kind treatment by complete strangers, makes me realise that despite man’s inhumanity to man in places like Syria, it is still a wonderful world. We must thank the Lord for this.

AFTERNOON TEA AND SING SONG will take place on Saturday 9th November. Moira Deane and Margaret Edwards are running an afternoon tea event from 3pm, which will include a chance to singalong with Father Martin and friends, which include some hippopotami; an ugly duckling; a pea green boat and some Yorkshire worms and ducks. Electoral registration canvassers

The council is having difficulty in finding electoral registration canvassers for delivery and collection of forms in Cassington. The delivery and collection is not for the whole village but the few households which have not responded to the initial form or reminder.

Canvassers need to be reliable, trustworthy and have good face to face interaction skills with the public. The role involves collecting as many signed and completed forms from non-responding households as possible. The canvasser door knock exercise will begin in the last week of December for five weeks. It is the intention to hold the canvasser briefings/training during December. Canvasser forms and materials will be available for collection early January.

Canvassers receive a fee, based on a percentage of the forms collected in their area. Mileage expenses will also be reimbursed. If you would be interested in finding out more please email [email protected] to express your interest.

Mystery tree-fellingForty years ago very many villagers of Cassington took part in the nationally sponsored scheme to ‘Plant a Tree in ’73’.

We have been enjoying the fruits of our labours over the years, even though some of the trees have not survived. I was very sad to see that the line of chestnut trees planted along the Yarnton Road has been grubbed up and the trees are now part of a huge pile of vegetation in one of the fields belonging to Worton Farm.

As soon as I saw what had been done, I contacted David Casey who told me he thought the Environment Agency had been doing ditching work in the village. Certainly the ditch adjacent to where the trees were is now very clear, and this is important. However, why were the trees felled?

David has not come back to me yet but there were a few trees left when I rang him, and I notice that these are still there and have been trimmed. What a truly handsome line of trees they were.

I have been in touch with West Oxfordshire District Council and await their response. There must have been at least fifteen trees, each with forty-years’ growth, giving a total of 600 years of tree growth. The trees have gone, but in these days of high fuel costs, I would have thought the least that could be done is to let the villagers have the wood to keep warm in this and future winters.

Plea for informationMy car, a black Audi estate, was damaged overnight between Friday 27th and Saturday 28th September whilst it was parked next to the Old School House in the village; and due to the amount of damage (a £500 repair bill) I was hoping I could jog somebody’s memory in case the incident had been observed. Due to low handlebar and brake handle marks, it looks possible that it could have been a BMX or maybe a small mountain bike that caused the damage. If you did see anything please could you let me know by calling me on 07970 858 740 or by emailing [email protected].

parish notesThe council met on the 3rd October with eleven members of the public present and Stuart Roberts from the Sovereign Housing Association.

MATTERS ARISINGa) Planning Application Ref 13/1249/P/FP. Stuart Roberts explained that an application had been submitted to WODC for eight affordable homes and two open market homes at Yarnton Road on a Rural Exception Site. Blenheim Estates would retain the open market homes for their estate workers. Six of the affordable homes would be rented and two affordable homes would be shared ownership, with Sovereign retaining 20% equity. The properties would only be available to people with a local connection. The site had been developed following National Planning Policy Framework guidelines

Comments on the application had been sent to WODC by Savilles, on behalf of the owner of ‘Farways’, whose property is adjacent to the site. This raised a number of issues including the question of the need for an archaeological survey, which Stuart confirmed would take place the following week. Stuart also confirmed that changes to the highway along Yarnton Road would be required under a section 38 highway agreement.

Clive Wilkinson said the council was happy with changes to the site layout now that the access road, that would allow further development of the site, had been removed. Also the houses had been aligned with the adjacent property ‘Farways’ to minimise overlooking. There were disadvantages in the location of the houses on the edge of the village.

Questions were raised by the public about building in the Green Belt and the fact that the houses would be better located in the centre of the village. Stuart Roberts said high land prices made it difficult to build affordable homes other than on rural exception sites where land costs were lower. Questions were also raised about the adequacy of village drainage to cope with the extra houses.

Clive Wilkinson said the residents should express their objections to WODC planning committee who, Cllr Poole confirmed, would consider the application at a meeting on the 21st October. The parish council had considered the application and had no objection provided the questions raised by Savilles were answered satisfactorily and that conditions were attached to the consent regarding highway and drainage improvements.

b) Neighbourhood Watch – report from ‘saferwestoxon.co.uk’ website. Cllr Wilkinson reported that PCSO Conner was retiring and this was his last report. There was a report on the ‘Mollifest’ event in Cassington on the A40 which attracted three thousand people on a very wet day.

c) Report back on meeting with the St Peter’s School governors to discuss the fence along Little Lane. Cllr Martin said she had attended this meeting with the school governors. It was stated that the fence could not be moved because of safeguarding the children. However, the governors would consider taking some responsibility for maintaining part of the lane enclosed by the fence and would report back to the council following a full governors’ meeting.

CORRESPONDENCEa) Letter from South Central Ambulance concerning possible placement of a defibrillator within the community. This was discussed and it was felt to be a good idea provided a suitable location could be found. This will be discussed further at the mid month planning meeting.

b) Request from Mr Wilkins for an ashes plot in the burial ground. This was discussed and given the lack of availability of plots and the fact that no ashes would be actually buried it was Resolved that the request should be refused. It was suggested a memorial bench might be an alternative.

c) Review of bus services in West Oxon – Oxfordshire County Council. The county council had written about this review of bus services which included the No 18 service. Cllr Poole thought this service was under used and suggested that any Cassington residents using the service should write to the county council in support of the service.

d) Determination of rurality of Carterton and surrounding towns and villages – results of the recent consultation where NHS, general practitioners (GPs) may apply to dispense NHS prescriptions in certain rural areas

classified as controlled localities. Under this review Eynsham Surgery has been determined as a rural area and will continue to dispense prescriptions.

REPORTS FROM COUNTY, DISTRICT & PARISH COUNCILLORSCllr Poole reported that the Local Development Plan had been deferred again, dependent on a new Housing Land Availability Assessment. Improvements to the A40 were a step closer due a financial bid by Oxford City Council for a new slip road between the A40 and the A34.

Cllr Clague reported on a near miss traffic incident at Worton Farm junction involving a local resident. It was agreed this information should be passed onto Highways as part of the campaign for a 40mph speed limit along the Cassington to Yarnton Rd.

QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLICA complaint was made about the overhanging hedge and weeds in Eynsham Rd from a property in Hollow Furlong. This matter was previously raised at a village walk with Highways. Cllr Poole said he would get the WODC street maintenance team to clear the weeds. The Clerk will report the hedge again to Highways for action.

A resident said he was concerned about vehicles speeding past his house from the A40 into Eynsham Rd. He had contacted Highways who said there was no funding for road improvements. It was suggested that a stop sign was needed to slow traffic. The Clerk will speak to Highways and Cllr Mathew.

DITCHES DRAINAGE AND FLOODINGThe Clerk reported that the Environment Agency had indicated that the ditch clearance would commence within four to six weeks.

MAINTENANCEA bag of winter salt has been ordered from Highways, reported the Clerk.

A quotation for clearing Little Lane footpath was received from Clare Want amounting to £70. It was Resolved to accept this quote.

FINANCEa) Payments. It was Resolved to make the following payments after considering the budget position:-Cassington and Worton News – September publication £114.00 Hire of the Village Hall £112.00Clerk Salary and expenses & stationery £641.40HMRC Payment £137.18Grass cutting of Burial Ground –R Brown £855.00

b) To consider the revision of burial fees in line with those charged by the Church of England.

The Clerk said the Church of England proposed a further increase in burial fees on 1 January 2014, the second increase in 12 months. It was agreed to defer a decision and discuss the matter at the mid month planning meeting.

c) Income. HM Treasury – interest on deposit bond £121.25

Burial fees: Betty Smith £205 and Richard Collett £102

PLANNINGa) Notification of planning approval by WODC. Planning Ref 13/1195/P/FP: Erection of conservatory at 5 Manor Close

b) Mid Month Planning meeting. It was agreed that the midmonth planning meeting would take place on Thursday 19th September at 7pm at a venue to be arranged.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

The Clerk reported that a request had been received for a marquee to be erected on the village hall car park for a wedding that was taking place in January. The village hall was also booked for this event. It was Resolved to agree this request.
