November saw no fewer than 11 NSVC teams take to the court... 5 u14s, 1 u16s, 2 u18s and 3 senior teams! It is credit to all of those players, parents, coaches and supporters involved that we are able to do this.
Big match night on the 27th November sadly saw the ladies match v Norwich frozen off, but the men beat Solent 3-0 in a great performance with a total of 109 present! Quite a crowd for the second tier of English Volleyball.. .let’s hope that the teams in the Super 8s draw in even bigger crowds than that each weekl!

Volleyball England launch Hall of fame at National Volleyball CentreOn the 13th November Volleyball England launched it’s Hall of Fame at the national Centre in Kettering. The launch drew in famous players past and present, and features one ex-’Castle star Richard Dobell. Also recognised is Dave Lovell’s former England Junior teammate Danny Weemes who has over 100 England/GB caps at the age of 28, and Dave and Will Roberts’s former coach at Loughborough Mike McKeever. For more info see the latest edition of 3 Touch magazine or online ion the VE website.
City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th Form College
For the past 4 years NSVC has developed a fantastic relationship with City of Stoke-on-Trent College in Fenton, seeing the growth of the Talented Athlete Programme (TAP) at the college to provide three training session per week for players. In 2010-11 we will continue to work closely with the college to further develop this programme which is unique in North Staffordshire, to provide daily opportunities to train through a partnership between club and college. Whilst many ‘Castle Juniors will always opt to attend other colleges, the 6th
Form College in Fenton is the only one with this formal link to the club, and is the only place where players will get the chance to train on a daily basis locally.
Junior Boys Head Coach Will Roberts said, “The link with Fenton is fantastic for our young players. I did my ‘A’ Levels there back in 1998-2000 and only wish I’d had the chance to train for volleyball at college as often as they now offer through TAP. It wasn’t until I started my degree at Loughborough that I got anywhere near the quantity of training needed to play at a decent level so I hope that by strengthening the link to Fenton we are able to help our young players progress and keep up to speed with their studies.”
My Perfect teamIf you would like to nominate your own perfect 6 please do so as soon as possible! Please remember that this is your newsletter so you need to contribute by emailing your selection to Will Roberts on [email protected]
Remember, it doesn’t have to be a ‘Castle team but could be from anything you fancy, for example an international team, or best ever NVL side etc!

Action from the 2004 Olympic men’s final between Brazil and Italy
Junior Teams progress in National Championships
The ‘Castle under 18 girls ‘B’, under 18 boys ‘B’ and under 16 boys ‘B’ in action in the first round of the National Cup.
For the girls and the u16 boys ‘B’ this was the first time most of the players had ever experienced matches at full-court 6v6 level and they performed very well. The girls played at Tettenhall, losing to the hosts (‘A’ team), and beating Wirral 2-0 before a decider v Wigan to see who went through to round 2 away in Manchester. In round 2 the ‘Castle ‘A’ team joins the competition where they are hosts on the 16th January at Madeley.
The u16 boys ‘B’ battled through the snow and ice to make it to Redhill for round 1. After losing 2-0 to the hosts they then beat Wirral and Tettenhall 2-0, before losing 2-0 to Wigan. There were some great performances from year 9s Joe Richardson, Will Beacon, Rob Bellamy, James Stuart and Connor Grimes, and debutant Dougie Ross really shone – but the team did not make it through to round 2.
Meanwhile the u18 ‘B’ – which is also the u16 ‘A’ performed excellently at Barton-on-Humber near Hull , beating Barton Blockers and Nottingham Rockets 2-1 – Rockets are a team hoping to make the top 8s so this was a really great win and the team went through as group winners so will face ‘Castle ‘A’ in round 2!
Round 2 dates:
8th January 2011 – u16 girls ‘A’ @ Madeley
15th January 2011 – u16 boys ‘A’ @ Madeley
16th January 2011 – u18 girls ‘A’ @ Madeley
22nd January 2011 – u18 boys ‘A’&‘B’ @ Madeley
On Saturday 6th November no less than five squads of ‘Castle under 14s travelled to Wolverhampton for the West Midlands u14 Championships.
With coaches Ant Viggars, Jen Bellamy and Charlotte James ably supported by club welfare officer Libby Bellamy and our resident photographer Lucy James it was a great ‘Castle day out as you can see from all of the pictures on these pages! The two girls and three boys teams did themselves proud playing some excellent volleyball an impressing head coach Ant Viggars with their performances. In the boys event the ‘A’ won overall, and the ‘B’ team came third! The ‘C’ team featured year 8s and did well in the second division, so looking good for next year!
‘Castle at the West Midlands under 14 Championships
“The girls ‘A’ team were looking really impressive –it was a real shame that Hannah (Kettle) had to go to hospital to have her finger checked out.
There was lots of Volleyball to play so it was great for all, and the boys ‘A’ team won the event playing very well.”Ant Viggars

The girls also played some excellent three touch volleyball with the more experienced Hannah Kettle (who got on court in the u16 girls National Final last year!) to the fore until she suffered a bad finger injury that saw her go to hospital for a check-up.
For the boys, performances of Rich James, Rob Bellamy and Will Beacon in the ‘A’ team, & Joe Richardson, Zakk Hadgett, Connor Grimes and James Stuart all bode well for an excellent future of the boys side of the club in that year group, and will all players now training twice per week they’re making great strides.
