For Decorative Chrome

A revolution in real decorative chrome plating; this new kit has special additives which widen the operating range of the system, making the system much easier for the novice to control. The only addition necessary to the system is distilled water. A small amount of battery acid is required for the copper system.

This 3 step chrome plating kit has been designed to provide a show quality nickel, copper & chrome plate on items such as headlights, bezels, bumperettes, nuts & bolts, brackets, etc. It can be applied to copper, steel, brass, and zinc die cast substrates.

There are three different processes, each with its own tank & chemicals, as well as the degreasing and Electrostripping tanks. The chrome plate is always applied over a nickel plate, which will fuse to most metals quite readily. The copper plating system is used as a hi-build filler to cover blemishes, pits and scratches. The copper plate can be built up to thickness of 1/8, and solder-it can be used to fill in deeper pits. The solder and plate is then sanded/polished and re-plated before nickel plating. This is an invaluable tool for the restorer!

You can plate onto Pot Metal, Lead and Pewter by plating first with Flash Copper. You may then build up with the regular Copper system if desired, then nickel and chrome plate. Aluminum parts must be dipped in Zincate solution prior to nickel or Flash Copper plating.

Nickel plating process will take approx. 30-60 minutes. Copper plate operation will take from 10 minutes to several hours if building up thick layers. The final Chrome plate layer takes only 4 minutes. Nickel & copper kits will plate approx. 60 square feet of surface area, before the anodes need replacing. The Chrome solution will plate over 1000 sq. ft/gal of decorative chrome. Solutions last over the life of many sets of anodes and are not usually disposed of.

LCD Aluminum Anodizing Kit

The Anodizing System:- Using a sulfuric acid process most grades of aluminum can be anodized. The system can be operated from a 12 volt car battery or charger. One gallon of regular strength battery acid (sulfuric) is required to make up the anodizing solution.

Due to the hardness of the Anodize finish, it is ideal for areas where scratching from road grit etc. is likely to pose a problem. It can be considered permanent if the part is buffed and polished before the treatment is carried out. The finish can be made to look like a chrome plate, and no further buffing or polishing will be required. At this stage of the process the film has microscopic pores (see picture right) which have to be sealed by dipping the part into sealant for 15 minutes. The part may be colored prior to sealing by simply soaking in our range of professional anodizing dyes. An almost infinite range of colors can be produced by mixing the dyes together.

The most exciting part of aluminum anodizing, is without doubt, experimenting with the amazing array of colors and effects one can produce, with a little practice and skill. The metal can be pretreated in a variety of ways, polished, scratch brushed etc., the anodize film grown, and then the colors applied prior to sealing the anodize surface, permanently locking the colors into the metal. The system is ideal for paint ball guns, model aircraft parts, and prototype work. The Complete Plating Manual discusses the numerous techniques for dyeing, including multicolor, splash dyeing, silk screen printing, air brush spraying etc.

Each kit is supplied with a color wheel. Dyes can be mixed together to create a host of different colors. The dyes are in concentrated liquid form, a 4oz bottle makes up 2 gals of ready to use dye. To make up different colors, we suggest that you make up the colors to the correct dilution first, then take a quantity of each dye and blend them together. Colors can be viewed on our web site.

Anodized aluminum has a very durable surface that is unaffected by weather and many chemicals. The surface will resist high temperatures, even a blowtorch, for short periods. The issue of safety whilst anodizing is addressed by the use of plastic fume balls and a chemical mist suppressant, both of which float on the surface of the anodizing tank. During operation, no dangerous fumes are evident. metal for immediate anodizing. This is useful on alloys prone to smutting when placed into the anodizing tank. (Usually found on many Japanese motorcycle parts.) Aluminum De-Oxidizer & De-Smut is a chrome-free liquid de-oxidizer for a wide range of alloys. It operates at room temperature and is also an excellent de-oxidizer for alluminum alloys prior to chromating.

Anodizing Sealant. This is the product the commercial anodizers use. Add only 1 oz per gal of distilled water, and heat to boil for 15-20 mins. 1lb pack makes 16 gals solution.

Anodizing Sealant LT. Here is a great new product which eliminates the need for boiling to seal the anodize. This remarkable material seals in only 5-10 minutes. Simply add 2 fl oz per gallon of distilled lukewarm water. Works by penetrating the pores of the anodized surface and through a precipitation mechanism, plugs the pores to provide an anodic film with improved corrosion resistance. Dye colors may vary. Not recommended for use with red dye.

Aluminum De-Oxidizer & De-Smut. This is the product the commercial anodizers use, a liquid concentrate, added to distilled water, to make a pre-anodize dip which de-smuts, removes unwanted materials such as copper, silicone & magnesium and prepares the metal

for immediate anodizing. This is useful on alloys prone to smutting when placed into the anodizing tank. (Usually found on many Japanese motorcycle parts.) Aluminum De-Oxidizer & De-Smut is a chrome-free liquid de-oxidizer for a wide range of alloys. It operates at room temperature and is also an excellent de-oxidizer for aluminum alloys prior to chromating.

Anodize & Chrome Stripper is a super fast commercial grade stripper. It outperforms all others in speed and quality. Does not attack the aluminum.

A reliable source of high quality battery acid can be obtained from NAPA AUTO STORES. Battery acid makes up ALL types of anodizing baths (just add distilled water). No need to carry different solutions for different anodizing tasks. Buying quality battery acid locally saves shipping hazardous materials and HAZMAT charges. It costs next to nothing, so much larger setups can be produced at minimum cost, and if you contaminate the tank, it is inexpensive to replace, unlike pre-made solutions.

Anodizing DyesThese professional quality anodizing dyes provide consistent, quality results. The same dyes are sold to professional anodizing shops all over the world. Each 4oz bottle of dye concentrate makes 2 Gallons. The finish will normally have a metallic look, and will vary slightly depending on the alloy and surface preparation. Procedure for Obtaining Dyed Anodize: - Anodize the aluminum at 60-75F for 90 minutes at 4.5 amps per sq foot or 0.03 amps per sq inch. - After thorough rinsing, immerse the part in the dye at a temperature of 140F for 15 minutes. - Finally, seal by hanging the part in a sealer bath for 15 minutes. Silver Plating KitCaswell Silver is a new type of alkaline cyanide free silver plating solution that will plate over nickel, sterling silver, gold, rhodium, copper, brass and bronze. The system will provide uniform color consistency and even coverage.

It is important when silver plating to realize what type of finish is required on the part. If a highly polished surface is required, the part must be buffed to a high shine before plating. If a matt finish is required, then the part should be beat blasted or buffed with something like a Scrubber wheel.

In our tank plating systems, pure silver will be deposited on the part in 1 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness of plate required. The system uses approx 2-6 volts and 1 amp per 16 square inches. The system operates at room temperature, so no heater is required.

Our cyanide free silver solution plates substantially faster than cyanide silver and with superior adhesion to cyanide silver. It plates with a brilliant white color. The bath is operated at room temperature.

The steps to achieve a brilliant silver finish are: 1. Buff & Polish 2. Degrease & Rinse 3. Acid Activate (with battery acid, not supplied) 4. Plate with Flash Copper (Steel, Pot Metal & Pewter only) 5. Plate with Silver 6. Acid Activate 7. Treat with Silver Conditioner (prevents tarnishing)

Potassium Hydroxide is used to raise the PH of the solution when required. The system must be maintained at a PH of 8.8-9.5.

Silverplater & SilversmithA great new way to re-silver:

Headlight reflectors, knobs, bezels, ornaments, flatware, contacts, etc, etc.

For old silver objects, simply apply a small amount of SILVERSMITH or SILVERPLATER to a soft cloth, and rub gently. The part will be etched clean and plated with a substantial layer of SILVER within a matter of seconds, as you polish. Rinse in fresh water and dry with a clean soft cloth.

SILVERSMITH or SILVERPLATER can be applied to surfaces made, or plated with, nickel, copper, bronze, brass, zinc. It will NOT work on base metals such as steel and aluminum. (But you could plate these with nickel first). The part should be highly buffed and polished before application.

As this is a real silver plate, it will tarnish gradually as with normal silver plate. A light rub over with a small quantity of SILVERSMITH or SILVERPLATER will soon restore the shine. Reflectors should last several years before needing a further application. Unlike metal polishes, SILVERSMITH or SILVERPLATER actually applies more metal each time you use it. Made with 99.99% pure silver.

Electroless nickel plating requires no anodes, power supply or electrical connection of any kind. The process simply entails mixing together some solutions, heating them to just off the boil, and then immersing the part to be plated. An auto catalytic electrochemical reaction takes place and the nickel is evenly deposited all over the part being plated. The thickness of the plate will depend on the duration of immersion. To stop the reaction, remove the part from the solution. Like all plating, the brightness of the plate depends on the brightness of the part before plating. The brighter the shine initially, the brighter the shine after plating. Numerous variations of the final finish are achieved by changing the surface preparation. Electroless nickel plating is not new; it has many applications in industry. Because the system plates evenly over all areas of the part, even down tubes and holes, it is frequently used to plate firearms and small hand tools. For the motorcycle restoration enthusiast, electroless nickel is a great tool for evenly plating the air cooling fins on many engine blocks, particularly older Indians & Harleys. Electroless nickel plates at an approx. rate of 1 mil (1/1000) per hour. Indoor decorative applications will need approx. 0.25 mil or 15 min. of plating. General outdoor items (hand tools, hand guns) should receive

0.5 mils or 30 min. Items requiring high corrosion resistance should receive 1 mils or 60 min.When electroless plating, you may not plate any item that has a surface area exceeding the maximum load of the bath. Tin is a very commonly used metal for the protection of steel. It is used extensively in the food trade because of its non-toxic qualities. The copper plate can be applied directly over brass, copper or nickel, but cannot plate directly onto steel, pot metal, zinc or aluminum. Now With New And Improved BrightenersOur new and improved copper plating system now gives constant bright copper plating, that requires little to no polishing after plating.

For the restorer, copper plating must be one of the most useful repair tools there is. By applying layers of copper, and sanding between applications, an incredibly smooth surface can be quickly built up, covering scratches and minor pits caused by corrosion.

The system will plate at 0.0005 - 0.001 (1 mil) per hour at 10-30 Amps/Sq Ft. More extensive repairs can be made by the use of a soldering iron and solder, which can be simply melted into the pits and sanded flat. A final layer of copper plate to seal over the solder filler can then be buffed and polished to a high quality luster. The successive layers of nickel and chrome plate applied to this type of quality substrate, will ensure a show quality finish.

Copper can be used to electroform, making complete objects from pure copper, by simply making a mold from wax & conductive powder, copper plat-ing the mold, then melting the wax. Copper can also be formed over lead molds, and the lead melted away afterwards. This has some applications for the person wishing to reproduce decals. Copper plating requires 0.07 - 0.2 amps per square inch of part surface area. Higher current gives faster plating times. The system plates at 70F-90F.

ZincateYou Cant Plate Aluminum

WithoutZincate Pre-Treatment For Aluminum

Using CASWELL Zincate Solution, aluminum can be pre-treated, and then plated in one of our plating kits. The problem:- Aluminum forms an oxide layer the minute it is exposed to air. This presents a problem when plating aluminum, as the oxide layer prevents the plate from sticking. By using the Zincate process as a pre-plate dip, we chemically remove the oxide layer and at the same time, apply a layer of zinc. The zinc protects the aluminum until it is ready to be plated. As the part is lowered into the plating tank, the zinc is etched away by the nickel solution and plating proceeds onto a clinically clean surface.

The process:Bead blast the part to remove all heavy oxides and contaminants. Buff & polish the part to the required shine. Thoroughly degrease the part in either CASWELL SP Degreaser or a suitable solvent such as acetone or lacquer thinner. Make up the zincate solution by adding 1 liter of concentrate to 3 liters of distilled water. Heat the solution to 75F Immerse the solution for 15 sec. to 2 minutes. Immersion time will depend on the alloy, zincate condition and temperature.

If the alloy reacts violently with the solution, then shorten the time immersed. If no reaction is visible, then immersion times can be extended.

A uniform gray appearance is usually a sign of a properly zincated surface, however there are cases where a dark, slightly streaked surface is acceptable. As the zincate solution is depleted, there will be a notice-able increase in the gassing. You can replenish the solution by adding about 10% of the Zincate Concentrate, or simply make up a new batch.

Rinse the part and prepare for plating in any of our nickel plating kits.

Pot Metal Electroless NickelFor Another Excellent Pot Metal Primer, use Flash Copper

The major problem with Pot Metal (Zinc Die Casting) is that it corrodes - badly! Its use is widespread in the automotive and motorcycle industry, mainly because it is easy to cast into intricate parts. Unfortunately, the metal is easily subjected to corrosion, particularly by mild acid attack. The zinc readily degenerates in the presence of even a mild acid such as tomato ketchup.

Pot Metal will polish up and look very good, for about 2-3 days, then it rapidly dulls down to a leaden look. This can be most unattractive on vehicles with lots of shiny aluminum or chrome. By polishing the part, then immediately plating it with Pot Metal Electroless Nickel, the metal can be given a long term, bright, shiny surface, closely matching the other components on the vehicle.

Parts made of Pot Metal and treated with Pot Metal Electroless Nickel may be plated with any of the following CASWELL Plating Systems:- Electroless Nickel, Electroless Krome, Regular Nickel (using power and anodes), Copy Chrome, Copper.

The Pot Metal Electroless Nickel system also provides a thin layer of nickel all over the surface, to prevent the acidic action of nickel, copper & Electroless Nickel & Krome baths, from attacking the pot metal. Repairs can be carried out before this process, if soldering, or afterwards if copper plating.

It is important that you ensure all areas of the part are extremely clean, especially any pitted areas. These should be closely examined for any black deposits, and they should be removed by drilling, bead blasting etc. In the event that the part will require some repair, this may be carried out with Solder pastes, or by heavily copper plating, then sanding smooth.

Brass Plating KitCaswell Brass Plating Solution is a unique cyanide-free alkaline brass plating system which plates a true 70/30 yellow-green plate directly onto steel and bright nickel plated surfaces. It can be used for heavy brass plating which will be antiqued (oxidized and relieved). It may also be used for decorative heavy brass if the surface is burnished or buffed and colored with a wheel to remove the slight haze and reveal the true rich brass color for lamp parts, hardware and plumbing fixtures.

To plate on zinc die cast surfaces, you must plate with Flash Copper first.

The system eliminates carbonates. Therefore, there is no carbonate sludge containing cyanide to be disposed of.

The mixed solution may be used to tank or brush plate.

Brass tank plating requires an average current of 0.02-0.1 amps per sq. in. and operates in the range of 3-12 Volts. Brass Plating is available on a small scale using Plug N Plate kits.

Boron Nitride Electroless KitBN EN is an extremely slick, abrasion resistant, low-friction, high lubricity coating. Ideal for all types of guns, engine pistons, fry pans, in fact anywhere where dry lubrication and non-stick is an issue. We see interesting potential in lining parts of Paintball Guns to prevent wear of the soft aluminum.

The coating can be applied in 20 minutes, to aluminum, steel, nickel, copper, brass and bronze. Other metals can be treated as long as a nickel plate is previously applied. Where corrosion may present a problem (such as on steel) the part should be previously plated with at least 0.0002 of Electroless Nickel plate. Generally gun components can be plated directly without a base primer of nickel.

The coating is applied at 0.0002 in 20 minutes. The system runs exactly the same as Caswell Electroless Nickel, except that it has a special filter pump, which agitates the Boron Nitride powder, keeping it in suspension. . The pump has a plastic tube, which should be secured to the pump body aiming the jet towards the bottom center of the tank. As the nickel is plated onto the surface, the minute particles of Boron Nitride are bonded all over the surface of the nickel, giving the part unique properties.

After plating, the pump should be left to run until the solution temperature has reached ambient again. At this point the plating reaction ceases. Failure to do this will result in the BN particles dropping to the bottom of the tank, where they will be plated into a solid mass. This will ruin both the particles and the solution. The bath must be maintained at between 70-105% nickel content by replenishing with Part A & Part C.

The BN Particles are slowly depleted from the solution. However, there will always be about 50% of these left over after 5 nickel replenishments. To recover the BN particles, the solution may left idle for 3-5 days and they will settle on the bottom. The spent solution may be carefully siphoned or decanted off and the BN particles may be re-used if they are free from nickel. For high output users, this may be an economical saving, as BN particles are a major expense of the kit. There is a special retrieval procedure involving nitric acid, which will remove the nickel. This information is available on request.

The BN EN finish has a satin look to it.

Gold Tank PlatingWork safely with cyanide free gold to plate jewelry, flatware, baby shoes, flowers, bathroom fittings and much more. Caswell 24ct Gold is ideal for immersion plating of larger items. For brush plating applica-tions, please use our FastGold system.

Certainly, tank-plating gold requires much less supervision and effort than brush plating. 24Ct Gold plates @ 2 micro inches per minute using approx 3 volts. Plating time is 30-60 seconds, to provide a durable decorative finish. An application of a VHT Clear Lacquer or Collinite Wax over a plated item will increase its wear, reduce water spotting and enhance the golds color. Cyanide free solution eliminates the dan-gers of deadly poisoning from ingestion through the skin or from the production of cyanide gas.

The system operates with either stainless steel anodes, or 24 carat gold anodes. Gold anodes prolong the life of the solution, but are obviously very expensive. Caswell 24ct Gold will plate directly onto tin,

copper, brass, bronze, nickel, silver and most lead free solders. Some alloys must be copper or nickel plated first. Steel must be nickel plated first. The system contains 2 pennyweights gold per US Gallon of solution. Trying to match existing gold supplied by another company is difficult as shades may vary. (It is better to lightly recoat the old gold with a new layer)

Black Krome Plating KitThis spectacular product will add style and elegance to many products. Ideal for vehicle trim, guns, musical instruments, fishing lures, etc.

The system plates within a couple of minutes over a nickel or copper base. To plate over chrome, the existing chrome plate must be removed by stripping with Anodize & Chrome Stripper.

Black Krome can be plated by brush plating or by an immersion technique. For brush plating, a 4.5 volt power supply and a stainless steel wand is required. For tank (immersion) plating, the solution is best used at 140F, using a stainless steel anode. Because the plate is derived from the solution and not the

anode, the solution will need to be replaced periodically.

When plating over nickel, the color will have a metallic smoky black look, whereas over copper, a darker black will be achieved. The finish should be waxed with Collinite Insulator or Metal Wax.

Hard Chrome Plating KitChrome plating can be used for two purposes:

A. Hard Chrome Plate Usually used to build up shafts or areas on steel that are subject to severe wear. The hard chrome plating process can take several hours to build up. The procedure is discussed extensively in The Complete Plating Manual, paying particular attention to the hard tipping of cutting tools.

B. Decorative Chrome Plate Most chrome plate is considered decorative. It is a very thin layer, approx. 1/100th the thickness of a human hair, which is applied over a NICKEL plate. Chrome offers NO corrosion resistance, as it is porous, so the nickel does all the protection. The chrome merely gives the nickel a blue look, and stops it tarnishing. Decorative chrome plate can be considered a clear coat over the nickel paint job. This chrome plating kit is NOT capable of decorative chrome plating. If you are interested in decorative chroming, youll likely want to purchase our Triple Chrome Plating Kit.

Unlike nickel and copper plating, hard chrome uses a high current of two amps per square inch of surface area to be plated.

You can chrome plate with a 6 or 12 volt battery, or charger, but if larger may need to use 2 batteries. The higher amperage required can also be controlled by the inexpensive construction of a nichrome wire resistor, a device made from a fireproof board and lengths of nichrome wire. Full instructions are in the Caswell Plating Manual.

Acid mist is produced during the chrome plating process from the vigorous action of the higher current used. This mist could be compared to dropping several Alka Seltzers into water, and needs to be controlled by either making a small fume hood, (a cooking stove hood is ideal) or wearing a respirator fitted with Acid Gas cartridges. Fume Control Balls and chemical mist suppressant are supplied with the kit to reduce this problem.

The Chrome Crystals supplied with the kit contain sufficient chrome to plate over 1000 square feet of chrome plate per gallon of made up solution. You should never need to replace this material. The Chrome is removed from the Chromic Acid solution, and the anodes are not sacrificed. It is unnecessary to replace these anodes. Should you ever wish to dispose of the solution, we can supply you with a

chemical to make the Chromic Acid solution safe to dispose in the drains.

Bright Nickel Plating KitOur nickel plating kits are designed to provide a commercial quality finish on a miniature scale, in approx. 30 minutes. The finish can be applied as a final treatment, requiring VERY LITTLE buffing to obtain a high shine, or as a base for chrome plating.

Nickel plate has a very slight yellow color to it, but in many applications, if polished, it can double as a chrome plate. All our chemicals are pre-weighed, so all you have to do is to add distilled water. We have tried to keep the processes as simple as possible and have standardized everything wherever we can.

This Nickel Kit will plate a heavy layer onto most metals except pot metal, and it should be used wherever possible, especially under a chrome plate. This system is too acidic for pot metal, which should be plated first in Flash Copper. Nickel plate may also be applied over a copper plate, and copper plate will adhere to the nickel. We suggest you apply copper plate to any areas with large scratches or pits, repair them using our solder-it pastes and then nickel plate them. By buffing the copper plate before nickel plating, you can achieve a very high quality finish, similar to Show Chrome. If this nickel finish is then chrome plated, the part will be Show Chrome.

The system uses a 6 or 12 volt battery or charger, and controls the current using light bulbs. If you intend to be plating frequently, we suggest you invest in a rectifier unit. All instructions and operating procedures are detailed in the Caswell Plating Manual. Each anode will plate about 30 sq. ft. of surface area before it needs to be replaced. The solution is virtually permanent. No waste chemicals or dangerous fumes are produced.

The included brightener chemical produces highly ductile deposits, which are free from laminations. It produces brilliant, white deposits of high clarity, reflectivity and depth. Superior leveling properties enable fine scratches and imperfections to be filled, enhancing the overall finish.

Our Nickel Kit now plates faster with more coverage in the low current density area. It produces 20 to 30% more thickness in the lower current density area than any other system. If you are chrome plating onto this nickel, you will also get better chrome coverage in the low current density than any other nickel process.

Bronze Plating KitOur new bronze plating system provides a beautiful, rich bronze finish without any dangerous cyanides or other hazardous chemicals. The coating is suitable for decorative applications. It will plate over Zinc Castings, Pot Metal, Pewter, Electroless Nickel, Plated Nickel, Copper, Steel, Sintered Metal, Tin, Lead, Stainless Steel and Zincated Aluminum. It is recommended to activate Zinc Castings, Lead and Pot Metal in Pickle #4 prior to plating.

The bronze plating solution comes pre-mixed and ready to use. Plate with stainless steel anodes at 80F, with 3V and 0.07 Amps per Square Inch.

A 2-3 minute plating time provides a good color, which may then be clear coated for corrosion resistance. If buffing the bronze plate is required, plating time should be increased to 30-40 minutes.

We offer two kits, a complete starter kit, which includes everything required to begin to bronze parts, or a mini kit, which includes the chemicals only, and assumes you already have such items as a DC power supply, airbrush, buffing materials etc.

The kits include 1.5 gallons of plating solution and 2 gallon tanks, large enough to plate 2 shoes at a time.

The kit can be used to bronze almost anything that is non-conductive, including baby shoes, plastic parts, leather items, fabric, flowers, plants, butterflies etc.

The steps to plate baby shoes are as follows:

1. Wash the shoe and laces separately in detergent and allow to dry completely. 2. Tie the laces, and glue them into their final position. Cut off any loose stitching, etc. 3. Affix a length of bare copper wire (not included) to the shoe. 4. Dip the shoe in the sealer solution for 30 minutes. Allow to dry. Dip again briefly and allow to dry. 5. Spray the shoe with Silvaspray Conductive Paint, using an airbrush, and allow to dry. 6. Hang the shoe into the bright acid copper plating solution, attach the power supply, and plate for approx 1 hour. Remove and sand down any rough spots. Continue plating for 3-5 hours, removing periodically and sanding down the rough spots. Remove and rinse the part. 7. At this stage, you have several options: 1. Buff the shoe to a shine, degrease and then hang the shoe into the included Bronze Plating System and plate for approx 10 minutes to give the part a real bronze finish. Dip in the sealer to protect the part. 2. Immerse the copper plated part in the included bronzing solution, which antiques the copper and gives a bronze look. Then buff the high spots to give an aged appearance. Dip in the sealer to protect the part. 3. Using one of our other plating kits, you could also nickel, gold or chrome plate the shoe.
