The Exam

Common Admission Test (CAT) of IIMs is conducted during a nearly

twenty five days’ window in the months of October & November of

every year. The computer based test offers the widest range of options

with among the best of career choices. Approximately 150 institutes,

besides the thirteen IIMs, use CAT score as one of the criteria for initial

short-listing of candidates for their Post Graduate Programs in

Business.

CAT consists of two sections - Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning,

and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Analysis - 30 questions each.

Each section needs to be answered in 70 minutes. Each question in the

test carried 3 marks, with each wrong attempt carrying -1 mark. Thus

the raw score arrived out of 90 for each section linearly scaled to arrive

at sectional score of 225 for each section. Overall percentile score is

arrived at based on sectional scores obtained in both the sections.

Through the changing patterns of CAT, the tested ability of candidates

have remained surprisingly constant; with students judged for their

comprehension of language and critical thinking, their ability to

analyze data and information presented and to take sound judgement

based on available information, and students' ability to think on the

toes are some of the attributes necessary to perform well in the exam.
