the 944 Wheel-type Traxcavator, was used

in construction at Cape Canaveral in 1960.

The machines were renamed wheel loaders in 1963.

Since our first wheel loader rolled off the line in 1963, we’ve been learning. Learning what works best, what needs improvement, what makes the job easier and what makes it safer. We’ve applied those lessons to each new generation and product, and we’re committed to continuing that process in the future.

We’ve built our wheel loaders at the same facility in Aurora, Illinois, for more than 50 years. Over the course of that time, we’ve gone from producing one line of wheel loaders to leading the market and producing five different families. We’ve learned what our customers require in multiple industries, including mining and construction, and created a number of options and features to help our wheel loaders meets the needs of any application.

Our largest wheel loader produced in the 1960s was the 992, with a bucket payload capacity of 7.64 cubic meters (10 cubic yards). Just 20 years later we introduced a machine that was nearly twice its size — the 994, which was developed to meet the needs of the large mining sector.

economy mode to save fuel and energy, and a number of other new developments make this

machine productive, efficient and safe.

Productive mining begins with a productive operator. Noise, stress and fatigue all have an effect on operator performance — increasing cycle times and the likelihood of mistakes or accidents.

We designed the cabs on Cat wheel loaders with the comfort of your operators in mind. Beginning with a large space and a comfortable seat, we built an environment where operators can feel comfortable and alert. We added a cab filtration system and high-quality sound reduction to keep dust and noise from affecting your operators’ health or productivity. Cab mounts and seat air suppression reduce vibrations. And we focused on visibility, allowing operators a better view of the truck bed or hopper, as well as the areas around their machine.

Low-effort ergonomic controls reduce fatigue and increase productivity, and innovative technologies like the STIC control system integrate the steering and transmission for natural and easy-to-learn operation. We also include a trainer seat to make training and testing new operators easier and safer.

The safety of your workers is one of your top priorities — which makes it one of ours. Caterpillar considers the safety of everyone in, on or around Cat equipment when we build new products or develop enhanced safety features for existing products. Our machines are built from the ground up with safety in mind.

Safety begins with the operator in the cab. By offering high visibility, a rear-view camera and HID lighting, Cat wheel loaders make it easier for operators to see what’s around them, reducing the chance of a collision. Access and egress are improved with two stairwell exits, both of which are well-lit for nighttime entry and exit; as well as powered ladders on some models to reduce the potential for slips, trips and falls. And we’ve made it safer for operator training by including an operator training seat, which allows an experienced operator to be present and seated in the cab during any training exercises.

We’ve also made maintenance safer by grouping service points at ground level, removing the need for ladders or stools during routine maintenance. With toe kicks and full perimeter railings, it’s also safer to move and stand on or around the wheel loader during checks and repairs.

One of our most sustainable activities is the rebuilding and remanufacturing of machines and components. Cat machines are built to be rebuilt — and wheel loaders are some of our most rebuilt machines. By returning end-of-life components to like-new condition instead of making new parts, we preserve our natural resources and extend the life of machines. We also offer complete machine rebuilds, allowing you to get additional lives from your current machines. And retrofit packages offer new features that make it possible to take advantage of the latest developments on existing machines.

We have developed multiple features to improve your sustainability efforts. Ecology drains and a positive flow hydraulic control system reduce the amount of consumables you use and make it easier to clean up and dispose of fluids. We’re committed to making machines that meet your environmental standards, and

the 992K is leading the way. It was the first wheel loader in the industry to come with

a Tier-4-compliant engine, and features ecology drains and other improvements to

help reduce its environmental impact.

When a wheel loader is down for maintenance, your operation can grind to a halt. We understand that every second your machines spend in maintenance is time away from productivity, so we design our wheel loaders to be as quick, safe and easy to service as possible.

All major access points are grouped in service centers — centralized areas either at ground level or on the platform — to allow technicians to do their work in one location. Throttle and engine lockouts keep maintenance personnel safe during repairs and replacements. Some models feature swing-out engine doors to give maintenance personnel easy access to all engine components. Fluid levels can be checked at ground-level sight gauges, making it quick and easy to take care of day-to-day maintenance tasks. And when fluids need to be replaced, ecology drains make it clean and easy to drain and dispose of the waste.

We also leverage technology to make maintenance easier. Diagnostics give you the ability to troubleshoot and monitor machine health information. Additional capabilities even alert the operator to malfunctions or changes in machine systems.

Because parts are common between our models, stocking parts is less expensive and takes up less space, which also saves time when repairs are necessary. We guarantee to make parts for any model still in operation, and with parts distribution centers throughout the world, most parts can be delivered in 24 hours.

The 986H is designed to maximize cost savings with superior fuel efficiency, thanks to its load-sensing hydraulic system and torque converter lock-up clutch. The 986 can quickly load the 36.3-tonne (40-ton) Cat 770 truck in just four passes; when equipped with a high lift front linkage, this loader is an efficient five-pass match with the 46-tonne (51-ton) Cat 772. The 990K offers more power and increased payload for greater productivity and fuel efficiency. The rated payload is 16 tonnes (17.5 tons), making it a perfect 4-pass match with the Cat 775 truck for efficient, high-production loading.
