The information in this brochure is based on many decades of experience in the manufacture and application of sealingand bearing systems. However, unknown parameters and conditions may restrict general statements during usage. It isvital that customers satisfy themselves as to the suitability of individual products through adequate testing. For this reason,

and due to the wide range of applications of our products, Busak+Shamban can accept no liability as to the suitability orcorrectness of our recommendations in individual cases.

The application limits for pressure, temperature and speed given in this catalogue are maximum values determined in thelaboratory. During practical applications it should be remembered that due to the interaction of the operating parameters, the maximum values must be set correspondingly lower. Choice of the Scraper Element

Scrapers are installed in hydraulic cylinders to scrape any dirt, foreign particles, chips, moisture, etc. from the piston

rods as they are retracted into the system, thus preventingcontamination of the hydraulic medium which wouldotherwise result in damage to wear rings, seals and othercomponents.

Single and double-acting wiper scrapers can be used, depending on the application and the seal system. They differ quite distinctly in their function:

Single-acting scrapers are designed to keep out contami-nation from the outside. Double-acting scrapers have theadditional function of optimising the seal system andscraping off the existing residual fluid film thickness to

avoid any external leakage. They thus form part of a func-tional unit and must therefore be seen in combination withthe seals.

In order to satisfy the different technical and economicdemands, Busak+Shamban has developed a completerange of scrapers with optimised geometries made fromhigh-quality materials.

Before selecting the scraper and the material, it is essentialto know all the desired functional parameters. Table I onpages 4 and 5 allows an initial selection of the scrapertype and material to be made according to the specificrequirements of the application.

The second column of the table contains the number of thepage on which further general information together withspecific design and installation instructions for the particu-lar scraper type and materials (or material combinationswith multi-element scrapers, e.g. TurconR ExcluderR) canbe found.

The ABCD analysis shown on page 5 is based on a com-parison of the different scraper types and materials. It isintended to serve as an aid to selection. All scrapers satisfy the requirements shown in their technical data andapplication recommendations.

The final choice of scraper type and material must alsotake account of the detailed information on the individualscraper type elements.

Please do not hesitate to contact our Technical Depart-ment for further information on specific applications andspecial technical questions.

Note on Ordering

All multi-element standard scrapers are generally suppliedas a complete set. The supply includes the scraper and thematching energizing element. The O-Ring does not haveto be ordered separately. It is also possible, however, to useother O-Ring materials from our ”O-Ring Catalogue”.In this case, please order the scraper and O-Ring sepa-rately. We will quote you the sizes of the O-Ring on request.

When ordering the scraper separately, it is then not neces-sary to quote the ”O-Ring material code” in the Order No.shown in the ordering examples on pages 10, 14 and 18.

Older designs of scrapers no longer contained in this cat-alogue naturally continue to be available. For all newapplications, however, we recommend the use of thescraper types and preferred sizes (DIN/ISO series, wher-ever possible) listed in the catalogue.

Other material combinations, special designs and any intermediate sizes of TurconR materials up to 2.500 mmdiameter can be developed and supplied for specialapplications, provided there is sufficient demand.

The sizes contained in this catalogue are generally avail-able from stock and can be supplied at short notice. Wereserve the right to modify our article structure withoutprior notice.

Quality Criteria

The cost-effective use of seals is essentially influenced by the definition of quality criteria. The seals manufactured

by Busak+Shamban are continuously monitoredaccording to strict quality standards from the materialacquisition through to their delivery.

Certification of our production works in accordance withstandard EN ISO 9000 series meets the specific demandson quality control and management in purchasing, production and marketing to assure the quality of ourproducts.

Our quality policy is controlled and implementedcontinuously via a structure and procedural organisationand in the form of working and testing instructions in all

strategic and operative sectors.Quality planning begins with the careful choice of the rawmaterials, the compliance with the specified formulations, manufacturing methods and the regular control of theprocess parameters. This continuous monitoring of all thephases of production helps to ensure the constant highquality of our products.

All tests on materials and guide elements are performedaccording to the relevant international standards and testregulations, such as e.g. the random sample testing inaccordance with ISO 2859, part 1 or MIL-STD-105E orthe testing of O-Rings in accordance with ISO 3601.

Our sealing materials are produced free of chlorofluorinatedhydrocarbons and carcinogenic elements.

The 10th digit of our article number is defined as a quality characteristic. A hyphen in this position confirms thestandard quality and the compliance with all theinformation given in this catalogue on the quality andcondition of the products. Customer-specific demandsare indicated and monitored with other characters in thisposition.

Design Instructions

Surface Roughness

As a rule, the surface finish is dictated by the requirementsof the piston rod seals used. For scrapers, the functionalreliability and service life also depend to a very greatextent on the quality and surface finish of the sealing sur-face to be sealed.

Scores, scratches, pores, concentric or spiral machiningmarks are not permitted. Ideally dynamic sealing surfacesshould be polished spiral-free.

The characteristics most frequently used to describe thesurface microfinish R a, R z   and R max   are defined in ISO

4287/1. These characteristics alone, however, are notsufficient for assessing the suitability in seal engineering.

In addition, the material contact area Mr (previously per-centage contact area tp) in accordance with ISO 4287/1should be demanded. The material contact area is deter-mined by the specific profile form. This in turn is directly dependent on the machining process employed.

Further information on this can be found in our catalogues”Piston Seals” and ”Rod Seals”.

Busak+Shamban recommends that the following surfacefinishes be observed:

Table III Surface Roughness

R a   0,05-0,20 0,10 - 0,40 < 1,6

The material contact area Mr   should be approx. 50 to

70%, determined at a cut depth c = 0.25 x R z, relative toa reference line of Cref. 5%.

Groove Distance

When installing scrapers in conjunction with rod seals withreturn delivery effect such as TurconR StepsealR K, werecommend the following positioning:

-   Distance between seal groove and scraper groove Lshould exceed groove depth X

-  Oil reservoir to collect the oil to be returned as shownin Figure 1.

Installation Instructions

The following points should be observed before installa-tion of the scrapers:

-  Check whether the piston rod has a lead-in chamfer

-  Deburr and chamfer or round sharp edges, cover thetips of screw threads

-   Remove machining residues such as chips, dirt andother foreign particles and carefully clean all parts

-   The scrapers can be installed more easily if they aregreased or oiled. Attention must be paid to the compat-ibility of the scraper materials with these lubricants.Use only grease without solid additives (e.g. molybde-num disulphide or zinc sulphide).

-  Use no sharp-edged installation tools

-   We recommend that the scrapers be covered whenpainting the cylinders.

Further installation instructions can be found under thedescriptions of the individual scraper types.

Storage

(The notes in   italics   only apply to elastomeric sealingmaterials)

Seals and bearings are often stored as spare parts for

prolonged periods. With a few simple precautions, theshelf life of these products can be considerably lengthened.Seals and bearings should be stored where they are safefrom damage by external influences. Deformation, inparticular, should be avoided during storage.

Under the influence of various external factors e.g. heat, moisture, light, oxygen, ozone and as a result of contactwith liquid media, the properties of certain materials may change. For example, deformation, ageing andweathering can cause deterioration of the originalmechanical and physical properties, depending on the

material and shape of the parts.

Fundamental instructions on storage, cleaning andmaintenance of elastomer seal elements are described ininternational standards, such as:

Storage of rubber products: DIN 7716/BS 3F68:1977

Maximum age limitation: MIL-HDBK-695C or MIL-STD-1523A orDIN 9088

The individual guidelines give several recommendations

for the shelf life of elastomers, depending on the materialclasses.

The following guidelines should be observed to maintainthe optimum physical and chemical properties of the

parts:

Heat

The ideal temperature for storage is between +5C/41Fand +25C/77F. Direct contact with heaters should beavoided.

Moisture

Parts may be stored dry under normal atmosphericconditions (65% rel. moisture  10).

 Weathering

To protect them against damage, seals and bearingsshould be kept in the original sealed packaging.

Ozone

Destruction of certain elastomeric sealing materials due toozone can be caused by the following machines andequipment:

- Mercury discharge lamps

- High voltage equipment

- Electric motors

- Electric spark sources or discharges.

Turcon ExcluderR 2

The TurconR ExcluderR 2 is a double-acting scraper withtwo geometrically different scraper lips which are installed

back-to-back. ExcluderR 2 is always installed togetherwith an elastic O-Ring in one groove. The scraper functionis performed by the ExcluderR 2. The O-Ring maintainsthe pressure of the scraper lips against the sliding surfaceand can compensate any deflections of the piston rod.

O-Ring

TurconR scraper ring

Figure 2 TurconR ExcluderR 2

ExcluderR 2 has a double function:

-  To scrape contaminants from the retracting piston rodand thus to protect the system from soiling, and

-   To hold back the residual oil film on the extending piston

rod on the medium side.

ExcluderR 2 are used in conjunction with the rod sealTurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with hydrodynamic back-pumping function.

 Advantages

-  Outstanding sliding properties

-  Stick-slip-free, no sticking

-  Can compensate for relatively large deflections of thepiston rod or plunger

-  Space-saving construction

-   Very good scraping effect against outside contami-nants, even with firmly adhered dirt, etc.

-   Very good scraping effect from the inside against theresidual oil film adhering to the surface of the piston rod

-  Very high resistance to hydraulic media

-  Available for all diameters up to 1.000 mm

TurconR ExcluderR 5*

Description

The TurconR ExcluderR 5 is a patented double-acting

scraper with two geometrically different scraper lips whichare installed back-to-back. The scraper is installedtogether with an O-Ring as elastic energizing element inone groove. The scraper function is performed by theExcluderR 5. The O-Ring maintains the pressure of thescraper lips against the sliding surface and can compen-sate any deflections of the piston rod.

O-Ring

TurconR scraper ring

Figure 4 TurconR ExcluderR 5

ExcluderR 5 has a double function:

-  To scrape contaminants from the retracting piston rodand thus to protect the system from soiling, and

-   To hold back the residual oil film on the extending pistonrod on the medium side.

ExcluderR 5 are preferably used in conjunction with ourrod seals TurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with a hydrody-namic back-pumping function. In contrast to the ExcluderR 2,they are used particularly for heavy-duty applications suchas in construction machinery, presses, etc.

 Advantages

-  Outstanding sliding properties

-  Stick-slip-free, no sticking

-  Tough scraper for heavy-duty operation

-  Can compensate for relatively large deflections of thepiston rod or plunger

-  Very good scraping effect even against firmly adhereddirt, etc.

-  Very good scraping effect from the inside against theresidual oil film adhering to the surface of the pistonrod

-  Identical installation with that of the ZurconR ExcluderR

500

-  Very high resistance to hydraulic media

-  Available for all diameters up to 2.500 mm

Scraper DA 22

Description

The scraper DA 22 is a double-acting polyurethanescraper for installation in grooves to ISO 6195, Type C.

Significant improvements are achieved with respect to theprofile geometry and material used compared with con-ventional elastomeric scrapers.

Figure 8 Scraper DA 22

The scraper lip is designed in such a way that it reliably scrapes off the dirt but leaves a residual oil film on the rodwhich is required for correct operation. The radialsqueeze is sufficient to reliably remove particles, dust andwater.

The scraping lip facing inwards is designed such that itassumes a sealing function even under pressure. Thestatic seal is achieved by a tight radial fit between thescraper body and the groove.

The scraper is preferably used in conjunction with our rodseals TurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with a hydrodynamicback-pumping function.

 Advantages

-  Good scraping effect, even with firmly adhering dirt

-  Wear resistant, long service life

-  Retaining and return delivery function for residual oil

-  Reduced friction compared to elastomer materials

-   Standard element for standardized installation grooves

Scraper ASW

Description

The scraper ASW is a single-acting polyurethane scraper.

Figure 12 Scraper ASW

The special feature of this scraper is an additional support-ing bead on the inner surface. It prevents tilting or twistingof the scraper in the groove. At the same time this supportimproves the firm seating in the groove, thus preventing thepenetration of impurities via the back of the scraper. Thisrepresents a technical improvement compared with similarscraper types.

 Advantages

-  Simple groove design-  Very good scraping effect, wear resistant

-  No tilting or twisting in the groove

-  Simple installation

-  Flush fitting with the outer surface

Technical Data

Speed: Up to 1 m/s withreciprocating movements

Temperature: -35C to +100C

Media: Mineral oil-basedhydraulic fluids, see Table II, page 6.

Use in Bio-Oils

The use of bio-oils in conjunction with polyurethane is sub-ject to certain limit values. WUAQ3 is suitable for use withvegetable oils (HETG) up to approx. +80C. In polyalky-lene glycols (HEPG), the use is limited after testing to +60C.

Please contact us before using the seals with synthetic esteroils (HEES).

Material

The standard material is a highly wear resistant polyure-thane with good cold flexibility.

Standard material: Polyurethane, 93 Shore A Material No. WUAQ3

Metal Scraper

Description

The metal scraper is a single-acting special scraper withtwo different scraper lips - a thin metallic lip and a elasto-mer lip. The two scraper lips are arranged in tandembehind one another in a compact metal housing.

Metallic lip

Elastomer lip

Figure 18 Metal scraper

The metal scraper lip is designed to remove firmly adher-ing soiling and ice particles. The secondary lip of elasto-mer material enhances the overall scraping effect, i.e. finesand grains, water and similar foreign matter are reliably scraped off. Both scraper lips have a smaller diameterthan the nominal diameter of the piston rod, thus ensuringa tight fit of the scraper lips. The metallic lip is guided flexi-

bly in radial direction and can easily follow any possibledeflections of the piston rod.

The metal scraper is available in a metric and an imperial(inch) size range.

 Advantages

-   Very good scraping effect, even with firmly adheringdirt, e.g. mud, ice

-  Very abrasion resistant

-   Tight fit in the groove due to the metal case

-  Easy installation in open grooves
