    DIRT! SCREENING

If you thought dirt was little

    more than an inconvenience

for your new white kicks,a documentary screening

    tonight at the McFaddin-Ward

    Visitors Center will change

    your mind.

    Dirt! The Movie, narrated

    by Jamie Lee Curtis, takes

a look at soil and its impor-

    tance to the sustainability of

    humanity. The film takes you

    from prison farms to fields

    turned to wastelands by

industrial farming to tropicalrainforests and the people

    whose lives are threatened by

    their deforestation.

    While a documentary about

    dirt doesnt sound like a

riveting way to spend a thirsty

    Thursday, this one has striking

    cinematography, great music

    and surprisingly fascinating

    subject matter thats been

    hiding right beneath your feet

    this whole time.

    When: 6:30 p.m. tonight.

    Where: McFaddin-Ward

    House Visitors Center, 1906

    Calder Ave.

    Admission: Free.

    FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE FAIR

    This is the last weekend

    for the South Texas State

Fair, so if you havent been

yet, youve got until the gates

    close Sunday.

    Fridays music lineup might

be the best of the whole run,

    with two fantastic blues acts

who will tear the house down:

    Shinyribs Russell and Hamil-

    ton Loomis.

    Shinyribs Russell has a

lock on country swamp bluesand has a huge following in

    Austin and Houston. He gets

    almost psychedelic some-

times with that voice of his,

so it should be a wonderful

    show. Read more about him

    on page C6.

    And Hamilton Loomis?

    Hes been playing since his

    grandfather gave him a drum

set at age 4. He played with

    his familys doo-wop band in

his teens, had his first perfor-mance with Bo Diddley at 16

    and fronted his own six-piece

    cover band by age 17.

Hes in his 30s now and

    still bringin the blues. His

    songs are gritty, sexy, gravy

    blues and soul standards that

    make him seem well beyond

    his years.

    The Miller Lite Beer Gar-

den will have all the booze

you need all night and if you

get bored with the music (as

if!), there are pig races nearby

and a whole midway full of

    greasy food.

    When: Shinyribs Russell

    plays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and

    Hamilton Loomis plays from 9

    to 10:30 p.m. Friday.

    Where: South Texas State

    Fair, Ford Park, 5115 Inter-

    state 10 South.

    Pro Tip: On Sunday you

can get in free if you bring six

    empty Coca-Cola or Dr Pepper

    cans. Those who bring the

empties also can pick up an

    unlimited ride wristband for

    $20.

    1VALERIE JUNE

I knew nothing aboutthis Memphis singer-songwriter, but she

made an instant impressionperforming with the assuranceof some of the great singer-songwriters from years past.June accompanied her richand expressive voice with justguitar, banjo and ukulele. Hersis a soulful sort of roots music

with potential for far-reachingappeal. The accompanimentsounds old-time folky, butsomething about Junes other-worldly voice makes her musicfeel very much of its era.

    2YUCK

This English banddeliberately dials backto the early 90s and

that rich era of alterna-rock,a logical step since just fiveyears ago bands were doingretro-80s stuff to great at-tention (though short-terminterest). Yuck is easy with amelody and puts enough mus-

tard on its songs to push themacross to those who do feellike rock left them behind.

    3THE BASEBALL

    PROJECT

It sounded like a ter-rible idea on paper:

Music vets Steve Wynn (TheDream Syndicate), Scott Mc-Caughey (Young Fresh Fellows,R.E.M.) and Peter Buck (yes, him) creating original musicabout baseball. But Wynnand McCaughey could makea song cycle about funeralhomes sound like radiant pop,and while theres obvious gleein this project (Who doesntaspire to rhyme something

with Calvin Schiraldi?), theirsubject also lends itself togravitas. Like the sport itself, these songs are full of intrica-cies, fame and obscurity, loveand heartbreak and death.

    4JAMES BLAKE

This English producer/performer is likelyto make his biggest

impression in other, moreelectronica-friendly lands, asevidenced by the bullying yam-mering during his lovely set atStubbs. His music was force-ful when it needed to be but

more often fragile and lovelyas swaying reeds in a breeze.Add that description to theword dubstep and his U.S.stock plummets. Too bad, ashis set of uncompromisinglygorgeous music offers a veryviable intro for those wantingto tr y progressive electronicmusic that has much in com-mon with pretty pop frompretty much any era.

5RAPHAEL SAADIQSaadiq is the kind ofnatural performer thatseemed to go extinct

after the 60s. Hes the bestthing to happen to R&B in avery long time, making goodon the promise that TerenceTrent DArby nearly turned intoa career.

    6CALIBRO 35

If your thing is MedeskiMartin Wood with zeroreservations, this Ital-

ian ensemble is for you. A dayset at Yard Dog was insanelyfunky with chunky guitar bitsripped one after the other byMassimo Martellotta. EnricoGabrielli was the most peculiarmulti-instrumentalist Ive heard.Hed beat the snot out of hisFarfisa and then peel off mon-ster free-jazz sax solos. Whenthe mood hit, he could also dosome damage with the flute. It was all united by enoughfunkiness to make you wantto crack a window. Luckily theshow was outdoors.

    7WILD FLAG

With two-thirds ofSleater-Kinney onboard, this band isnt

a huge departure from thatone. Despite its Portland(ia)location, the group foundsome inspiration from sunnyCalifornia pop, especially inthe bright vocals that set it

    apart from S-K.

    8EMMYLOU HARRIS

Expect big things fromthis rising talent. ...Actually the country

legend trotted out two vulner-able and honest tributes tofriends who had died (GramParsons, Kate McGarrigle) thatsounded great.

    9WANDA JACKSON

Jack White was sup-posed to show andplay guitar at this

evening gig. He didnt. Peoplewere chanting his name, whichwas shameful. Jackson sound-ed significantly more spry livethan on her White-producedalbum, particularly when she

did some yodeling. And shesounded spirited on I GottaKnow, the greatest country/rockabilly fusion ever record-ed. Ask White, an estimablesong guy no doubt, which ofhis tunes is better than thatone. I bet he answers honestlyand not in his own favor.

The Arctic Monkeys were notincluded in our top nine ... butthey put on a heck of a show.

    Speak Easy Lounge

    711 Procter St., Port Arthur

    (409) 982-1700

    Open: Wednesday throughSunday

    When you ar-

    rive: Take a

    moment be-

    fore walking

    inside, so you can really

    appreciate the transfor-

    mation about to unfold

    before your eyes. While

    the exterior looks bat-

tered and weary, all of that

    melts away when you walk

    in this warm, comfortable

    and classy! joint.

Restrooms are: At the veryback, in the corridor under the exitsign.

The layout: Open, with plentyof seating, a big bar and a stageto sing your heart out in karaoke. With tall ceilings, youd think theacoustics would be off, but itwas easy to hear and be heard, whether on the stage or in theaudience. The walls are all woodpaneling and brick, and the objectof my attention for a good while

was the beautiful chandelier hang-ing overhead.

The crowd: is friendly, entertain-ing and generous. People reallyrespond to a smile at this bar, andwant to laugh with you. Its not abar where you will sit in a cornerand be ignored. Your evening isshared with those around you, friend or stranger. This involuntarycompanionship is a large part ofwhat makes Speak Easy Lounge amust-not-miss bar experience.

    The ambiance: feels like an

open patio on a breezy summernight, only without the bugs. Every-thing about this bar feels warm, from the service to the amazingwings. Yes, wings. Food is served

until 1 a.m., and the options arefull of tasty fried goodness. Sitat the front if youre on a diet, because if youre near the kitchentheres no way youll resist orderingsomething.

The pitch: Their motto, printedon the back of their menu, is

that everyone is VIP to them. Andits a motto they live up to. Theyare open Wednesdays throughSundays, with happy hours from5-8 p.m. Wednesday is karaokenight, Thursday is steak night andSundays are Swingout Matineefrom 5-10 p.m. for those of youwho love a good jitterbug.

Dont miss: Karaoke Wednes-days. Pick a number you know well, because good performances arewell-received. One of my biggestkaraoke donts (that I often violate)is picking a song to which you onlyknow the chorus. When in doubt, make a friend sing lead while youplay back-up. Those numbers aremore fun for the audience anyway.

If you plan to drink: Try a Te-quila Blue for $6.50. I dont know

    Photos by Scott Eslinger/cat5

    ABOVE: The Speak Easy

    Lounge on a Wednesday

    night in downtown Port

    Arthur.

    LEFT: A patron leaves the

    Speak Easy Lounge.

    Live freely,

    speak easy

whats in it (other than tequila),but it came highly recommendedby the bartender on duty. WhatI do know is that it tastes great, plus it comes with a cherry on top.Tequila might not be your drink, but there are plenty of other liquoroptions in this well-stocked bar, somaybe make yours a Vodka Blueinstead.

Verdict: I started planning mynext trip out to Speak Easy beforeI closed my tab. For a special occa-sion, this bar really hits its mark.

But dont wait for a date circledon your calendar to visit. Driveover on a whim with a close friendand prepare to settle in for thenight. I believe youll be pleasantlysurprised!

    Why does

    it seem

    that

    some

    folks have an inherent

    sense of style and oth-

    ers dont? You know,

    those folks that youre

    always saying, I love

    what youre wearing, but

    I could never pull that

    off!Are they really so different

from us average Joes and Janes,or do they have secrets to sharethat can help all of us find ourown way sartorially? I spoke tosome of the standout stylistasof Southeast Texas to find someanswers.

    At 21, Eblaja Fashion Coali-

    tion founder Ebo-

ny Tezeno has apretty solid senseof herself and herown style.

Im a vintagegirl, she said.Probably frombeing aroundmy grandma somuch.

Even so, her look changesday to day, but always featuressparkles, bright colors and bigrings.

When you look good, you feelgood, she said. First impres-sions are important, and whenpeople see you looking good, itsays something positive aboutyou.

To those who are venturingout and developing their senseof style, she says confidence iskey.

    Be confident in yourself and

your look, she said. That playsa big part.

As the owner of Lolas Fresh

    Produce, style is Vanessa

    Melancons busi-

ness. She hasbuilt a uniquetraveling boutiqueon the idea thatnot everyonewants to betrendy.

I feel likethe things I likeare not the trends, they comeeither before or after, she said.I always wanted the bag thatno one had. I started Lolas be-cause I thought, surely I cant be

the only one who feels this way,who wants to be unique.Vanessa describes her own

style as feminine and classicwith an edge, inspired by someof her favorite musicians suchas Jenny Lewis, Kate Nash andLily Allen.

Im drawn to people that arebrave enough to not do exactlywhat everyone else is doing, she said. Thats being fashionforward.

But for those who may justbe figuring it out, Try with onepiece at a time. Make onebrave move in a typical outfit, and it goes from there.

When she talksto me about herenviable JeffreyCampbell plat-form booties thatshe has on withdenim cutoffs,a vintage shawljacket, T-shirt anda chain halter she

made herself, its obvious that22-year-old Chelsey Lopez has apassion for unique things.

For a long time, my friendsand family would ask me, Whatare you wearing? I dont know, something just told me thislooks good together, she said.

Lopez is a student in theFashion Merchandising depart-ment at Lamar and hopes oneday to be a personal stylist.

Personal style is you, howev-er you feel comfortable and con-fident, she said. Some gothkid at the mall has personalstyle, and so does the lady withlots of turquoise jewelry and along braid. Its not my style, butits still style.

    Everyone has asense of style

    11 a.m. 5 p.m. Monday

    through Saturday and 8 p.m.

    until late Thursday through

    Sunday

The menu: Is allgravy, baby. Well,

    theres definitely

    a lot of gravy

    here, and thats also the

    motto for this homey, un-

    expected gem.

    This is cafeteria-style,

    home-cooked soul food

like your mama makes. And when you visit you

    just might find Mama

    Richard hanging around,

    telling you about all the

    goodness you get to

    choose from.

And choices you have. Forentrees, youll find turkey wings, pig feet, beef tips, barbecue ribs,

meatloaf, hamburger steaks, bakedchicken, oxtail or smothered porkchops. Sides include mustardgreens, yams, rice or corn breaddressing, mac & cheese, mashedpotatoes, okra and tomatoes, baby

Richards Cafe serves up a soulful lunch, then turns into a nightclub after the sun goes down.

lima beans and more. Add a denseserving of corn bread or a dinnerroll to your meal or try a huge bowlof gumbo.

Oh yeah, and dont forget thelate-night weekend fry menu thatincludes melt-in-your-mouth catfish, chicken or pork chop with fries anda roll.

Prices: Are straightforward. Oneentre choice with three sides androll or cornbread is $7.99, and if

you have an average appetite, youwill definitely need a doggie bag.The oxtail meal will set you back$10.99 and the jumbo gumbo (mydescription, not theirs) is $8.99.

Recommendations: A customerwho confessed to patronizing Rich-ards almost every day when it wason College highly recommendedthe fish courtbouillon when theyhave it.

If you are a pork chop fan, thisis definitely the place to have one.

    Standout sides are okra &

tomatoes (no slime in sight, okrahaters), greens and yams.

Dont miss: Dessert! The sweetpotato pie was the perfect endingto a hearty meal, with a light, fluffysweet potato filling and firm, flaky

Mary Richard, 70, opened Richards Cafe with her family in the early

90s when they moved back to the area. The cafe started in Kountze

and moved to College Street before arriving at its Magnolia location.

    crust. Perfect.

And the same Richards cus-tomer who recommended the fishcourtbouillon also recommendedI try the pecan candy. Um, yeah, Iwill.

    And on a completely different

note, if you are smart enough to

eat some catfish when youre atthe club (see below), please makesure to ask for some of da bombhomemade tartar sauce. Theydont call it that, I do.

    The drink situation: This might

come as a surprise to customerswho knew Richards back on Col-lege, but there now is a nightclubinside!

A Touch of Class Club is openfrom 8 p.m. to midnight Thursdayand is open even later Friday andSaturday. Sundays its open 6 p.m.to midnight. Expect to pay a coverof $5 before 11 p.m., $10 after.

Ladies night is Thursday with acover of $3.

    I recommend getting there later

rather than earlier as this placestarts moving around 11.

Mixed drinks are available, alongwith a fab dance floor, live DJ and asmoking patio.

And youll find the freshest friedbar food in town, of course. Thereis no microwave in this establish-ment, yall.

Atmosphere: From the outside, this is one of those places youprobably wouldnt take a secondglance at when driving by.

Step in the doors and it is com-

    pletely down-to-earth and comfort-able.

For lunch you will find folks inscrubs, business suits and Nomex.Everyone is here because theywant to eat good food.

The place is large while stillretaining the at-home feel, and theeclectic furnishings give it a lot ofcharacter.

At night, dress to impress.Find the restrooms: In the very

back to the left, then on the right. They are the one-person kind,

but us ladies can move in and outfaster thanks to the full-length mir-ror right outside the door. No needto be in the bathroom to touch upyour makeup.

Extras and specials: Well, Ithink its pretty special that theresa nightclub inside a soul food res-taurant in Beaumont.

Just sayin. The verdict: This is called soul

food not health food for areason.

If you want to feel touched by an

angel, come get some down-homeSouthern cooking in an environ-ment that makes you feel likeyoure at grandmas.

And then come back later to getyour dance on.

The low-down: Patillos BBQ is a Beaumont institution and has been for the past 99 years. The location

on 11th Street has been there since 1981.

I recommend: The two-meat plate with three sides $9.75 Side of boudain links $3.75. This plate

was piled with sliced beef and pork with sides of potato salad, beans and rice. Sliced white bread, pickles

and onions come with pretty much everything. Dont forget to say hi and leave a good tip for Miss Gloria,

who can hook you up with some of the finest BBQ Southeast Texas has to offer.

Tip: Some say Patillos has one of the best jukebox selections in Beaumont, ranging from Sam Cooke to

Wilco to Lucinda Williams. Five plays for a buck, so bring some jukebox money.

    THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 t h eC AT 5. c om C 25

    TheLipstickMystic

    ForecastforLOVEAries: March 21 April 19

You dont care how many times

    you get rejected. Youre determined

to keep asking people out until

youve lined up a bunch of hot

dates. The sun is inspiring you tobroaden your social circle and at-

tend as many parties as possible.

    Taurus: April 20 May 20

    A casual, platonic friend could

    express interest in becoming

    something more. You might not

know how you feel about thisperson just yet. Venus is encourag-

ing you not to reject this possibility

out of hand. Be open to a little

    exploration.

    Gemini: May 21 June 21

Issues of right and wrong are on

your mind, thanks to justice seekerSaturn. You might be wondering if

you can really trust someone. Or

you could be obsessing about past

slights and bad things that your for-

mer flame did to you. Lighten up.Cancer: June 22-July 22

Your intuition is a little off baseright now, so dont jump to conclu-

    sions. Maybe your honey isnt

    seeing somebody else behind your

    back, even if youre suspicious.

    And perhaps youre wrong about

your honey being ready to break upwith you. The moon says chill out.

    Leo: July 23 Aug. 22

    Talkative Mercury is putting you

    in a confessional mood. Youll

want to tell someone about that

one night stand you had or let

somebody know how you really feel

about him or her. Youll feel betterif you get a few things off your

    chest.

    Virgo: Aug. 23 Sept. 22

Its hard for you to focus on re-

lationships when you feel like work

and money matters are out of con-trol. With Venus still opposite your

sign, its important for you to con-

centrate on taking care of yourself.

    Let romance become a secondary

    pursuit, not the main one.

    Libra: Sept. 23 Oct. 23

    You could be feeling pressured

by people who want you to make

certain choices with your love life.

    Maybe your parents are pressur-

ing you to marry someone or aclose friend doesnt think you

    should continue dating someone.

The moon says make up your own

    mind.

    Scorpio: Oct. 24 Nov. 2

A dreamy Venus is inspiring you

to dream big. You dont want to

    just casually date anymore. Youre

ready for a special soulmate to

come along. Or if youre in a rela-

tionship, youll want to take things

    to the next level.

Sagittarius: Nov. 22 Dec. 21With the moon opposite your

sign, its important not to make

    any sudden moves. Dont overreact

to something that isnt really that

    important. Dont push yourself to

start a new relationship when the

truth is that youre not ready.

    Capricorn: Dec. 22 Jan. 19

You could be going back and

    forth about a relationship, wonder-

ing if its worth it. Mars is creating

    some misgivings. You probably

need to spend more time with this

person before youre ready to makea final decision. Give it another try.

    Aquarius: Jan. 20 Feb. 18

    Business matters are on your

    mind as Jupiter h
