    LyondellBasell: Shaping Tomorrow

LyondellBasell is the world’s third-largest independent chemical company. Our vertically integrated facilities, broad product portfolio, manufacturingexibility, superior technology base and reputation for operationalexcellence enable us to deliver exceptional value to our customers acrossthe petrochemical chain – from rening to advanced product applications.

    Essential Ingredients

We manufacture products and develop technologies that improve the

quality of life for people around the world. Our products are the basicbuilding blocks used to manufacture countless everyday goods suchas personal care products, fresh food packaging, lightweight plastics,high-strength construction materials, automotive components, biofuels, durable textiles, medical applications and many others. With the help ofLyondellBasell materials, thousands of products are made safer, stronger, more affordable and more reliable.

    Experience and Long-term Commitment

The pioneering work of Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta continues to shape

and improve our lives. While working with LyondellBasell predecessorcompanies, these two fathers of modern polyolens changed the worldwith their discoveries. Their achievement was recognized with the NobelPrize in Chemistry in 1969. At LyondellBasell, their legacy of innovationlives on. Catalloy process technology, for example, was invented in the1990’s in Ferrara, Italy and was seen as a break through innovation. Thisprocess today produces a full range of advanced polypropylene productsincluding in-reactor thermoplastic polyolens. Since its introduction nearly25 years ago, LyondellBasell Catalloy process technology has introducedmany new and innovative grades, many still considered benchmarksin popular applications. Amazing then and amazing now - we are atechnology-driven company powered by innovative thinkers. Watch asCatalloy process resins shape the face of tomorrow.

Thermoplastic Polyolens (TPO) from theCatalloy process

LyondellBasell’s proprietary Catalloy technology combines the advantagesof polyolens with those of elastomers. Their wide range of highly balancedand tailor-made properties makes these materials unique. Catalloy TPOresins can also be recycled to guarantee full sustainability throughout its lifecycle – and beyond.

Catalloy is a multi-stage gas phasepolymerization process, not just a resin or aproduct name. This process produces materialsover a much wider property spectrum and witha high degree of consistency.

From the Catalloy process, LyondellBasellproduces an innovative family of thermoplasticpolyolens (TPO). Using a series of independentgas-phase reactors with independentcomposition and sophisticated catalysts, theCatalloy process produces ex-reactor polymeralloy using multiple monomer inputs.

These advanced polyolens are used by ourcustomers as base materials, raw materials incompounds or as polymer modiers. Catalloy TPO resins can be formulated to meet speciccustomer requirements and can deliveradditional value in use, through:

Note: Schematic overview of Catalloy unique processtechnology. Independent uidized bed reactors withmulti monomer capability exploiting spherical Ziegler-Natta high mileage catalyst with controlled porosity.

    1. Cost performance - offers replacement forhigher priced exible polymers or engineeringresins with more cost efcient polyolens.

    2. Differentiation - brings cost benets alongthe value chain and enables differentiation inend-use applications versus commonly usedcommodity materials.

    3. Properties modication - modies andenhances the properties of other polyolensused in blown and cast lms, textile, calendaring and extrusion thermoforming. They can also be injection molded, compression molded and used as buildingblocks for technical compounds.

In a comparison Catalloy with a standardpolypropylene (PP), the Catalloy TPO resinscovers a signicantly broader range from verysoft, without the use of plasticizers, to more

rigid properties. Along with other characteristicssuch as impact resistance, dimensional stability, aesthetic and optics; the Catalloy process resinsmeet the requirements of many applicationelds.

Catalloy process resins are sold as easy-to-blend and easy-to-store pellets. With fourmanufacturing sites in Europe and NorthAmerica, Catalloy sales and support teams havea global reach to serve customers worldwide.

Adex, Hifax, Softell and Adsyl : UniqueStructures

Unlike conventional TPOs that are merely mechanical blends of elastomersor plastomers in a polypropylene matrix, LyondellBasell TPO is an alloy ofrubber and polypropylene produced simultaneously in the polymerizationreactors. It creates a much better dispersion of the rubber in the material, which has a direct effect on the processing consistency and end-useproperties.

As opposed to elastomers or plastomers, theCatalloy TPO resins do not necessarily requireadditional off-line blending with polypropylene, thus minimizing the complexity sometimes seenwhen handling these materials and managingthe ensuing risk of inconsistencies in blends atthe end-users.

Manufactured using LyondellBasell’s proprietaryCatalloy process technology, the Catalloy TPOresin product families – Hifax, Adex and Softell - enable the control of key properties such as:

    • Low specic gravity• Stiffness and impact balance

    • Thermal resistance

    • Low-temperature exibility

    • Optical properties

    • Dimensional stability

    • Softness

    • Compatibility with polyolens

    THREE KEY PROPERTIES

Catalloy resins are split into 4 product families:

HIFAX–Outstanding impact forindustrial and exterior automotiveapplications.

    ADSYL– Low seal initiation temperatureresins.

SOFTELL–New generation for industrialand consumer applications. Softness, exibility and soft touch.

    ADFLEX–Very soft, exible polyolens.

Grades with an outstanding balance ofmechanical performance, processabilityand aesthetics. Utilized by customers inbuilding and construction applications(e.g. single ply roong), industrialapplications (e.g. wire and cable) andautomotive applications (e.g. interior andexterior parts).

Through different co-monomercompositions, Adsyl grades offerthe marketing leading range of sealinitiation temperatures combined withrelatively high melting temperatures. Theresulting favorable balance of thermaland mechanical properties outperformsstandard polypropylene and polyethylene, making Adsyl low sealing temperatureresins the materials of choice for bi-oriented polypropylene lms (BOPP) as wellas for cast and blown lms.

Combining toughness with exibility, customers select these resins due to theirresistance and elasticity. Softell resinsprovide an enhanced soft-touch feeland slip resistant grip used in electricalappliances and tools. Additional benetsinclude the ability to bond well with otherpolyolens and additives and the capacityto effectively incorporate llers.

Our Adex family are very soft and exibleTPO resins used by a wide number of ourcustomers in applications such as specialitylms, as a blending partner to improveimpact performance, extrusion coating, bitumen modication and consumerapplications. In addition to enhancedexibility, the Adex resins exhibit excellentimpact performance at low temperatures, outstanding haptic properties and softtouch.

Also manufactured with the Catalloy processtechnology is the Adsyl product family for thepackaging industry, which require low sealinitiation temperatures (SIT), no stickiness, high clarity and additionally provide specicfunctional properties to the lm surface.

AllCatalloy resins can be easily shipped inbulk containers and stored in silos, makingit an easy-to-handle product compare toconventional grades.

The Catalloy TPO resin product families – Hifax , Adex and Softell – improve the processabilityin injection molding, sheet extrusion, thermoforming and blow molding operations. They enable the replacement of higher pricedexible polymers or engineering resins withmore cost efcient polyolens. Additionallythey can be used to modify properties ofother polymers used in technical compounds, extrusion, injection molding and other blendedapplications. The thermoplastic Catalloy resinsoffer very attractive properties includingexibility, high thermal resistance, haptics andprocessing.
