The Network Media Cooperative was set up in October 1979 in April 1980
Network issued the rst 19 media packages, then in the orm o 1-2 sound
cassettes with an accompanying little booklet in a small sliding box. The layout
table or the Letraset and strips o composed text used to be on a bath tub.
Conceived as a project in an oppositional public sphere, their themes ocussed
on social conficts which today30 years onhave become even more potent:
among them, unemployment and business crises, nuclear power and the disposal
o atomic waste, major construction projects such as Frankurts new airport
runway, youth subcultures in search o direction, migration and xenophobia
In those days, only a small part o Networks program consisted o music rom
araway cultures, which was later to become the primary ocus. In collaboration
with the radio and television broadcaster WDR, Network initiated the World
Network series, with a total o 49 releases, including more and more coproductions.
The discovery o the upright ormat with two CDs and more space or texts and
photos opened up whole new presentation possibilities. With 3 x 2 CDs o Desert
Blues, Network created a new genre, Golden Arique (vol. 1, 2, 3) documents
the golden era o Arican pop music in the 70s and 80s, anthologies (like Road o
the Gypsies, The Soul o Klezmer, Balkan Blues) and musician portraits (Sexteto
Mayor, Bratsch, Djivan Gasparyan) became permanent bestsellers. Their musical
expeditions and recording trips have taken them to more than 80 countries.
The result is a wide and resonant kaleidoscope o the most diverse musical cultures
on our planet. The important thing or Network, this side o the amiliar middle-o-
the-road sounds, which are mostly imitations o Anglo-American pop music, was to
track down the unpredictable sides o music. These are more likely to be expressed
in lively acoustic pieces with a lot o improvisation or in highly emotional ballads.

Within a few years of publishing Desert Blues
delighted listeners were urging us to create a follow
up. We took as long as we felt was necessary to
select 26 tracks that cover a broad spectrum from the
traditional to the contemporary, featuring encounters
between musicians of different cultures. The colours
and the atmosphere of the music tell of fantastic
landscapes, of desert, oasis and steppe, of ancient
cultures and the peoples who live there. This CD takes
you on a journey through ten different countries, with
outstanding recordings of well-known performers and
many exciting new discoveries.

The lively, rhythmic jive of the townships is represented
here by West Nkosi, Sipho Mabuse and the early
Mahotella Queens. We also hear soulful pieces by and
with the young Miriam Makeba and featuring the Soul
Brothers. Some musicians working in exile at this time
included Hugh Masekela and Johnny Dyani. The music
of Zimbabwe is inspired by the sound of the mbira,
a traditional instrument echoed directly in the guitar
cascades of The Four Brothers and Hallelujah Chicken
Run. We also hear rhumbira and jit, rooted in Congolese
rumba. From the copper belt of Zambia comes a more

slightly brittle voice, sometimes crystal

old rembetiko bars.
