EditorialEditorialBy: Suzy Hebbert, NAA Secretary
The month of January is amonth for new beginnings -new year's resolutions, a
new calf crop and a new bull saleseason. January was kind to thecattlemen in many ways, mildtemperatures, record prices forcattle of all ages and an extremelystrong demand for Angus genet-ics. I am extremely thankful forall of these blessings. I wish eachand every one of our members asuccessful production salewhether they sell by auction, con-signment or private treaty. The Cattlemen's Classic Angusshow and sale will be in Kearneyon February 23rd. There are 40bulls, 1 bred heifer and 13 heifercalves consigned to this year'sshow and sale. If you are lookingfor great Angus genetics fromacross our state, Kearney, Ne-braska is the place to be on Febru-ary 23rd. Our annual state showand sale looks to be another greatevent.
We will be having a boardmeeting at the end of Marchwhere we will review our annualactivities and events and plan forthe future. Although going to lotsof meetings isn't always a top ac-tivity for me...I do look forward tothis one because it gives our boarda chance to set direction for ourassociation for the next few years. Also in March we will be schedul-ing a planning meeting our An-nual Tour which will be inNorthwest Nebraska this year. In this issue is an article onour current Nebraska AngusQueen, Cheyann Lovett. She is ahard working, talented, outgoingyoung lady who has thoroughlyenjoyed her tenure as Nebraska

Dear Cattle Producers,
By: Randy Pettera, NAA President
Year 2012 has just begunand it is the first of Feb-ruary. January’s
weather was one that will behard to forget. The recordwarm temperatures were re-ally nice. Especially for calv-ing season. But, thegroundhog has not predictedan early end to winter yet. AsI am writing this, the first bliz-zard of the year is anticipatedand it looks like not one partof Nebraska will be spared.
I went to the NationalWestern Stock Show and vis-ited with all the numerous Ne-braska Angus Breeders whohad cattle on display. It wasgreat to see the quality of theangus cattle our Nebraskan’shad on display. Our state isone of the top producers ofAngus cattle and these breed-ers definitely showed off whatwe have to offer.
I would recommend any-one interested in the Anguscattle to become a member ofthe Nebraska Angus Associa-tion. The benefits are way toonumerous to mention and isone that each member finds onhis own through membershipand friendship with otherswho share the same interests. As I am writing this, theNebraska Cattleman’s Classicis just around the corner andthere seems to be a goodshowing of interest for theAngus show this year. I wish
everyone the best. It isn’t justthe winning of shows thatcounts. It is the participationof all and the friendships thatendure over time that mattermost. But, I still wish every-one could be number 1 at theshow. The Cattleman’s Classicis a great place for Angus pro-ducers to exhibit their live-stock. Cattle prices have been re-ally good for lightweightcalves. Cow prices have beenstrong. Bull sales have beengreat. The news is telling usthat the big 21st century chal-lenge to farmers will be toraise enough food to feed agrowing global population. That is one thing Angus pro-ducers have in our favor.Angus cattle and quality aresynonymous, so the high de-mand for our cattle shouldcontinue.
We will be having a boardmeeting in March to discussthe activities for the year. Ifanyone has any ideas or sug-gestions, please contact us.The Nebraska Angus Associa-tion wants to do everythingpossible to help all our mem-bers.

American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member
Iwant to thank Suzy for ourannual meeting and banquetin December. She had a
great program with Matt Span-gler from UNL giving a valu-able presentation. We are luckyto have such an energetic youngman in our state.
I'd like to congratulate all ofthe Nebraska Angus breedersthat showed and exhibited cat-tle at the National Western inDenver. These folks representour state well at that importantevent.
Since I sit on the CertifiedAngus Beef board, I attendedour regular December meetingin Wooster, Ohio. We discussedat length the new GeneMax pro-gram, the new two trait DNApanel that is available to com-mercial producers to identifycarcass and growth traits. TheGeneMax program was intro-duced at the NCBA convention.
The Februaryboard of directorsmeeting will takeplace from February22 - 24. Your boardwill be working onissues concerningupdating the Termsand Conditions ofSales to help makethem more applica-ble to today's salesmethods, issues con-cerning some inter-national trademarkissues with CAB toprotect our brand inthose market places,

2011 Nebraska Angus Asso-ciation Pioneer ProducerAward.
Lee Sonderup and his broth-ers, Dale and Milo, started pur-chasing Angus cattle back in the1950's. As Lee and his brothersstarted growing their herd,Lee's daughters, Lori, Karolynand Shelly were becoming moreinvolved in 4-H. They con-vinced their father to purchasesome registered Angus breedingheifers as 4-H projects, whichwere purchased from theBryce's in Northeast Nebraska. As the girls became more activein 4-H and FFA, they purchasedheifers to show from registeredbreeders across the state. Judy and the girls have fondmemories of driving to the Erd-mann bull sales in SouthDakota. Seeing Dr. Spock forthe first time. It was great fam-ily memories in the making, while helping to build the Son-derup Angus herd. While atthat first Erdmann sale they at-tended, they purchased someheifers. There they met a cou-ple from Nebraska by the
names of Vance and ConnieUden. The Uden's hauled thenewly acquired heifers homeand with that became a lastingfriendship, although Lee
thought Vancecharged him toomuch to trans-port thoseheifers. Leebought numer-ous females andherd sires fromthe TC Ranchwith some ofthose bloodlinesstill tracing backto the herd today.
Shelly became ac-tive in the Junior Angus Associ-ation and was Queen in 1986.She also competed in the Na-tional Junior Showmanship con-test in Springfield, IL in 1986.After getting married, Lori andher husband Darrel started toget more involved and beganAI'ing and using embryo trans-fer. Through this they were ableto build a quality herd whichenabled them to start havingannual production sales thattook place every year from 1990until 2003. During this time the nextgeneration was getting in-volved. Darrel and Lori'sdaughters had started taking amore active role in the opera-tion and were beginning theirherd, just like their mother, as a4-H project. In 2003, the familymade the decision to dispersethe majority of the cow herd fol-lowing Darrel's untimely death. Currently the herd consistsof around thirty registered cowsand around twenty recipient
cows that are used to carry em-bryo transfer calves. Bloodlinesthat the cows go back to includeTraveler, Bando, New Design878, New Design 1407, TC Fore-front and TC Freedom. Theycontinue to use AI and embryotransfer. The bulls and femalesare now marketed privately. The family would like tothank the Nebraska Angus As-sociation for this recognition ofLee. It would mean so much tohim and does to our entire fam-ily. He would be honored to re-ceive this award for his workand love of Angus cattle. Heenjoyed going to many produc-tion sales with family andfriends. It was a highlight of hislife to be able to visit aboutAngus cattle.
T.L. Sterner was a business-man involved with real estateand insurance, and in the 1950'smost of his customers werefarmers and cattlemen. His cat-tle friends all had Angus and hedecided to join the Anguscrowd and in 1950 became amember of the American AngusAssociation. In 1963 he joined apartnership with his son-in-lawVance Uden until Trueman'sdeath in 1972. He showed cattleat the NE State Fair and the NEFuturity in Columbus almostevery year. When Truemanwent to the National WesternStock Show in Denver he wasnot at all familiar with the city;he and his daughter Connie de-cided to follow a car driven bytwo men wearing cowboy hats.Luck was with them as the two

men unwittingly escorted themdirectly to the stockshow whereTrueman proceeded to buy thetop selling bull in the 1958 Den-ver Stock Show Champion Car-load. This bull Ak Sar BenEileenmere 283 sired many topselling bulls and left good fe-males in the herd.
From the start, Trueman
kept herdrecords under aUniversity of Ne-braska Beef Cat-tle HerdImprovementprogram prior tothe AmericanAngus Associa-tion startingAHIR in 1958.He also managedthe Kansas-Ne-braska Consign-
ment sale for 23 years whichwas one of the top consignmentsales in the state selling around40 to 50 two-year old bulls and10 to 20 females every February. He and his wife Rose also annu-ally attended the NationalAngus Convention held inChicago.
Trueman was a people per-
son and for two decades duringthe fifties and sixties he had asummer picnic for Angus breed-ers to get together and visit.During the meeting, he and themen would talk Angus whileRose entertained the ladies dur-ing their own social gathering.Trueman loved the cattle busi-ness and his own small herd; hedid all the work with the ani-mals himself before and after of-fice hours which showed hispassion for the breed and thepeople involved with it.
