In Literary Rituals, Gabriel Weisz compiles and compares a great
heritage of magical knowledge in the context of themes such as fetishism, the use of the body as a magical instrument and the importance of sacred places. In addition, he analyzes the influence of magical knowledge in literary creation throughout history. The text's theoretical and conceptual richness makes Literary Rituals an effective tool for the scholar interested in the use of magical resources in literature.

Dear Educator, Reader, Librarian,
Fondo de Cultura Económica (fce) has published the work of many brilliant authors and scholars over the years, creating one of the richest and most diverse catalogs in Latin America. Given its rigorous publish-ing tradition and its international presence, fce is today considered one of the leading publishers in Latin America. Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Carlos Castaneda, Elena Poniatowska, Carlos Monsiváis and hundreds of other distinguished authors have made Fondo de Cultura Económica their home.
Established in 1934, fce originally provided students of economics with books in Spanish, and then it gradually expanded to include other subjects; now its back catalog of 9,000 titles—approximately 4,000 of which are still in print—encompasses works on history, philosophy, an-thropology, economics, sociology, arts, children’s literature, popular sci-ence, and literature (fiction and non-fiction).
fce also has thirty-two bookstores: twenty-two in Mexico, eight in Latin America, one in Madrid, and one in Washington, DC. In addition to its offices in Mexico, fce also has branches in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, Spain, the USA, and Venezuela. Our publish-ing house also produces magazines: El Trimestre Económico, the longest-running Latin American quarterly journal on economics, and La Gaceta, a monthly publication with articles on our authors and reviews of our books.
We release over 200 new titles each year and this catalog—a small se-lection of our new titles and highlights—will undoubtedly be of interest to your institution. You are welcome to order children’s literature and other titles through our Sales and Distribution branch in San Diego, California, at the Pórtico Bookstore located in Washington, DC, or through our main distributors across the USA (see page 46).
Thank you,Dorina Razo, fce-USA Manager

This fine poetic narrative is a tribute to those who live
at the edge of indifference and experience spontaneous external combustion. Bonzes without a cause, absent-minded androids, vampiresque twins, supermodel zombies and animé and manga-inspired japonglishes, parade past the impassive gaze of time, the one that dissolves everything. This novel confirms Octavio Paz’s description of Carlos Chimal as a rara avis of Mexican literature. Quijotesque and Rabelaisian, this work subtly ridicules those who are unable to die for centuries and who live according to the motto: “Act as if you were already dead”.

In this autobiographical work, Jeannette Clariond offers a
sequence of moving images in which poetry and prose overlap, “pilgrimage and exile are the sources of silence” and rivers converge into the subtle and powerful voice, not only of a girl, but also of an entire community of Lebanese exiles who found refuge in Northern Mexico.

Tale of a Black Dress is a compilation of 64 previously
unpublished tales of various lengths, in which the author insinuates his erudite background into the works with both naiveté and irony. The author lightens his extensive use of symbols by wrapping the profound in the trivial and by creating a homogenous mix of the avant-garde and the traditional. The latest contribution of this well-known author is, no doubt, an example of the best in contemporary Hispanic American narrative.

This volume gathers the author’s work over
the course of 30 years: The collection of vignettes, short and long-form prose includes miscellaneous texts ranging from anecdotes and epistolary resources, to metaliterature and polyphony. Drawings by renowned artists, such as Basia Batorska or Eko, accompany the stories to round out the reader’s experience. Ultimately, the combination of the drawings and stories brings the reader into the middle of an intense dialogue between these consummately compatible forms of artistic expression.

While Carlos Fuentes (1928–2012)
is recognized as one of Mexico’s and the world’s greatest novelists, any survey of his work would be incomplete if it did not also
include his masterful short stories. It is precisely in his short works that the core of the issues that dominated the whole of his literary output can be found; identity, Mexicanness, origins, time, family—yet at the same time, it contains his most free and experimental writing. This volume brings together and chronologically documents all of Fuentes’ stories published in magazines, anthologies and collections, dating from his early “Pastel rancio” [Stale Cake] to his final book Carolina Grau.

Edén Ferrer is one of Mexico's lesser-known authors whose
work deserves a wider audience. Epiclesis is a complete and complex four-part work: the first part examines his only novel, a highly original and ambitious detective story, intensely intellectualized and written in muscular and erudite prose; the second introduces thirteen previously unpublished narratives, full of unforgettable characters and settings; the third includes three essays, notably one on Diego Rivera; and the final part consists of a collection of poems previously scattered about and largely unknown, as well as several other previously unpublished poems.
My Tents and My Awnings, a novel by
Luisa Josefina Hernández, echoes the narrative intensity and style characteristic of her short stories. Hernández uses simple yet nuanced language and tones that range from comic to dramatic. The novel’s characters lead the reader through the endless nooks of the Castelo house to explore deteriorated furniture and, as occurs in many families, broken relationships. The paradox of this novel is that the family does nothing to hide its dysfunction.

In the stories that comprise ¡Oh hermoso mundo!, Galindo plays
with the present, the past, and the future. In the ambiguity of the created moment, fused with the protagonists’ delirium, drowsiness or desire, he makes the reader participate in the alienation of modern man, in his frustrations and his solitude—but also in his tireless search for happiness by way of friendship or love.

This volume contains the entirety of Rubén
Bonifaz Nuño’s poetic works —a renowned, admired and essential writer in Mexican literature—from La muerte del ángel [The Angel’s
Death] to Calacas. His poetry represents the comprehension of universal culture, as well as a careful observation of acts of love; it offers readers an expansive vision of the world, employing traditional formulas, Greco-Latin and Mexican heritage, and unquestionable poetic ambition. It is, in short, an invaluable contribution to anyone seeking to explore the panorama of twentieth-century Mexican poetry.

José Homero has distinguished himself with a fresh approach that stems from the perfect use of poetic
resources which evoke disconcerting images, thus becoming a renowned author in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The poems in La ciudad de los muertos vacillate between love and eroticism, life and death, in a constant dialogue replete with mysteries. The intensity of his lines place them at the forefront of Latin American poetry at the beginning of this century.

Vivo, eso sucede collects the essential poems of
one of the clearest and most prominent voices of twentieth-century Latin American poetry. From his early collections—Puertas al mundo [Gateway
to the World] and Ocupación de la palabra [The Word, Occupied]—to the serenity of his mature work—Telar de la neblina [Mist Loom]—the poetry of Juan Bañuelos, poet of the so-called Rupture Generation, has enriched and exalted Spanish-language literary and poetic tradition, encouraging his readers’ search for meaning and critical reflection. This anthology gathers many previously little-known poems and commemorates an established career.

It is uncommon to find poetry capable of digesting crudeness
and transforming it into light, of evoking memories, of kicking the stones of an empty riverbed and spread them afterwards using only words. Confronting the senselessness of violence and death, Jorge Humberto Chávez offers new life for anything real. The author’s dry, dense poetic language offers us an essential chronicle of the tragic environment in a particular area of Mexico. The author won the 2013 Aguascalientes Fine Arts Poetry Award for this work.

Octavio Paz has described Aurelio Asiain's short
poems as transparent, verbal fruition. Indeed, these poems exhibit sensuality, vigor and intelligence. Objects and places develop a vital plot in which brevity illuminates ideas, without artifice. Brevity is suggestive; irony and reflection achieve a poetic forcefulness far beyond that of the mere aphorism. Even an elegy dedicated to another poet does not dwell on pain, but envelops us in accurate words that reveal the natural precariousness of life. Urdimbre is a labyrinth of surprises, where the master thread is poetic language: “I am the language and I wouldn’t know / how poems are written”.

It Was Late Already is a compilation of poems by Aline
Pettersson. The poems’ subtle language guides the reader through
the situations sketched in the verses and reflects the author’s expert powers of careful observation of the world around us. Pettersson needs not to use dark or violent images to expose the crudeness of life; through her work she proves that linguistic simplicity and precise expression form the basis for writing poetry.

Gozolalia, the most recent work by Víctor Hugo
Piña Williams, reveals how words are able to convey poetic language replete with images, rhythms, and harmonies that awaken the reader’s figurative perception. Each poem is composed from a unique lexical repertoire that intertwines rhythmically and semantically. The fine webs the author weaves respond to an abstract but universally attainable pattern and feed the imagination and poetic sensibility of the reader. The volume is, without a doub, like a symphony of the best Latin-American poetry of our time.

This collection of stories illustrates Ricardo Chávez
Castañeda’s experimental ability, and the author amazes us on each page. Drifting from the terrible to the sublime, this compilation presents solitary, almost ghostly characters who are willing to go beyond the boundaries of humanity, even though death stalks them constantly. The stories “Child Thief” and “The Corner at the Edge of the World”, both worthy of international short story awards, especially stand out.
Black Sugar illuminates the role of black culture in Mexican
history in four vignettes. In all of the sketches, the consequences of historic denial and suppression on this culture become clear. In
this way, Carmen Boullosa highlights the persistent racism of a country that refuses to acknowledge “the third root” (the roots of African heritage) of its national origins.
Las Casas in History offers a biographical assessment
that analyzes Las Casas’ role as chronicler of the Americas on the one hand, and on the other, examines the key events in his defense of the natives of the Americas. Marcel Bataillon surveys the different interpretations of the cleric and questions the depiction outlined by some scholars, especially Ramón Menéndez Pidal’s well-known biography of the friar.
This volume contains Gilberto Owen’s most famous poems,
written between 1921 and 1948; from his first youthful works to his Perseo vencido [Perseus Vanquished]. Compiled by Élmer
Mendoza, also from Owen’s home state of Sinaloa, this book of poetry is an event: it is a careful selection of a small, elusive body of work, perhaps less famous than the poems by his fellow Contemporaries: Xavier Villaurrutia, Carlos Pellicer, Jorge Cuesta and José Gorostiza. This careful selection is a worthy introduction to one of the greatest Mexican poets of the twentieth century. Besides the best of Owen’s poetry, it also includes a brief but poignant collection of his love letters.

Overview is a collection of Enrique Jaramillo Levi’s narrative pieces,
selected from books that the author has published in Mexico, Panama, Spain, Guatemala, Costa Rica and other countries over three decades. The tales in this work vary in length, from micro stories to extended tales. The first section includes realist, fantasy, metaphysical, erotic, children’s and meta-fictional tales; in some stories, the author merges different narrative styles. The second section explores the challenging art of the micro story. In short, this anthology features some of the most creative and fruitful contemporary Hispanic American narrative.

Exiled in Spain due to Argentina’s political situation, Juan Domingo
Perón finds himself in a vulnerable position. He is concerned about the possibility of not being able to return to his country if Cámpora is not elected president. This leads to a strange measure: López Rega, his personal assistant, uses his esoteric skills and by way of a persuasive almost hypnotic speech disguised as a dialogue, prompts Perón to remember his childhood, origins, birthplace, and deepest secrets, only to use them against him in the future. In this novel, Valenzuela unmasks all events and political conflicts of Peronist Argentina with a clever and entertaining style.

Obras Reunidas III. Crónicas is the third
installment in this collection of essays and fiction by one of the most important Mexican writers of the twentieth century, Elena Poniatowska. This volume includes Las siete cabritas [The Seven Goats], Juan Soriano [Juan Soriano], Niño de mil años [Thousand-Year Child], La barranca de Metztitlán [Metztitlán Canyon], and El Color de México [The Color of Mexico], written in Poniatowska’s pure, fresh, incisive style. This volume also includes countless short biographical, historical, cultural essays and articles on Mexican literature.
Verani asks us to read the poems of one of the most
important voices in Mexican literature with a new, fresh vision and to shun commonplace interpretations. To facilitate this, Verani provides a complete portrait of the influences on Paz’s work. Each poem is presented as a reflection upon places Paz visited an individual experience incarnated in history. In the poems, a consciousness of the decline of civilization prevails as well as a yearning for liberation through words, and so a will to transform the world.
The essays included in this book reveal that for
many Cuban writers, exile was a cultural breach as well as an opportunity (albeit difficult) for cultural expansion. In this analysis, Rafael Rojas depicts Cuba as a world of literary and ideological possibilities; the island is an infinite metaphor of the constant shifting between the avant-garde and tradition.

Pieces of Shadow. Selected PoemsJAIME SABINES
Pieces of Shadow is a selection of poetry by Jaime Sabines, one of the most important figures in Hispanic-American
literature. These poems have ‘the jarring authenticity of passion in tone, a great cracked bell note of craving and frustration, irony and anger, outrage and black humour all jangled at once, unabashed, unsweetened, unappeased, and all of it essential to the rest’.

This book is an introduction to the Spanish language through playful exercise in poetry writing. It approaches
the task with humour and, as classic writers might say, it attempts to instruct while giving pleasure. Those who know nothing, those who know a little, and those who know a lot will each find this book interesting and instructive.

ure Kill the Lion!
JORGE IBARGüENGOITIA
Jorge Ibargüengoitia (1928-1983) did not write to make people laugh. Yet he is typically labelled as a humourist,
satirist, and parodist. In Kill the Lion!, his near-slapstick tale of attempts at assassinating an aging dictator, Ibargüengoitia subdues humour (laughing in recognition), precludes satire (impaling to instruct), and achieves mature, clement comedy (smiling in acceptance, acknowledging with wisdom). Even so, the book’s conclusion allows for heartbreak and penalty, but with a long sigh, not a moan. The novel distinctively orbits alone—rather than revolving with the cauterizing constellation of Latin American novels about dictators—like a midsummer’s moon-cooler, wisely divert, humanly indulgent.

A New Catechism for Recalcitrant IndiansCARLOS MONSIVÁIS
Carlos Monsiváis (1938-2010), writer and literary critic, was a crucial figure in the Mexican literary tradition of the
twentieth century. New Catechism for Recalcitrant Indians is an apt demonstration of his lucid and powerful style. The racism that came up when, as Monsiváis states, ‘the true religion and nauseous idolatries’ were established in Mexico, pushes the fable to deal with the topic of power over religious belief. Humorously presenting the conflict between the pagan Indians and their counterparts, the friars, Monsiváis is able to explore the complicated and still relevant ways in which catholic religion monopolized faith at the expense of understanding.

Alfonso Reyes is perhaps the most universal of mexican thinkers. At a time when nationalism reached its peak
in Mexico, his profoundly humanistic and wide-ranging literary output established the foundations of modern thought not only in his home country but across most of Latin America. His writing covers such an encyclopedic array of themes, genres and cultural traditions that he came to be known as ‘The Mexican Polygraph’. This volume is a much needed English language starting point and an insightful literary guide to Reyes’ work.
In this work, Román Piña Chan provides an important
interdisciplinary contribution that combines archaeological knowledge with analysis of the testimony of one of friar Bernardino de Sahagún’s informants, a testimony that includes important facts about the history of Mexico’s central high plateau.
Ignored for a long time, the Olmec civilization appears
as the most ancient of the American continent. The well-known Americanist Jacques Soustelle outlines the Olmecs’ profile, showing their images and describing their culture, and at the same time he points at their influence on other more fortunate pre-Hispanic civilizations, whose presence still remains among us.
This work is a sociological, demographic, and
political reconstruction of the region of Papantla, a region that, as a result of the rise in demand for vanilla on the international market, underwent the transformation of private property and of social and cultural structures. Moreover, this monograph provides a detailed reconstruction of the origins and development of the international market for Mexican vanilla, and of this commodity’s growth over the course of 19th century in particular.
With a comprehensive but cynical spirit, Aurelio de
los Reyes analyses in depth the origins of Mexican cinema, and concludes that between 1896 and
1900 the bases for the creation of characteristically Mexican cinema, regarding the thematic and the way of making the films, were established. This second edition revised and corrected by the author, offers as well a new introduction.

Historia de la filosofía medieval
History of Medieval PhilosophyMAURICIO BEUCHOT
History of Medieval Philosophy is a concise explanation of the most important currents in Medieval philosophy. This
volume provides a general survey of the thought of theologians and schools as well as confrontations between different thinkers over philosophical problems. This study is framed as a hermeneutical analogy. Thus, the work has twin goals of exposition and criticism of Medieval philosophers’ thought process.

Bauman examines the moment in which culture ceased to be an agent of change and became a medium of
attraction as a result of globalization, migration, and population mixture. The best example of this phenomenon is Europe, where culture has been revitalized and is understood through a diversity of races, languages, and histories.

Modernity has failed to eradicate irrationality from the world: in spite of the spread of communication, the
irrational part of human thought not only persists, but has adapted and taken on new dimensions. In the articles in this book, the author analyzes the current status in contemporary Africa of the beliefs and practices that in Western thought are grouped together under the generic name of witchcraft. He shows how globalization has generated new ways for some of the concepts that govern social, political and economic life in countries such as Cameroon and Nigeria to be integrated into daily life.

Alcohol has been a part of many cultures for millennia.
However, in the present day the fact that it is considered a consumer commodity gives rise to multiple social and health problems. The aim of this book is to present the known facts about the epidemiology of alcohol in developing countries. It also examines the strategies that governments can adopt to prevent and reduce problems caused by alcohol, and how the effectiveness of these strategies is evaluated.
Marijuana is the most consumed illegal drug in the world, but studies of its effects on health and the
effectiveness of systems to control it have had a marginal role in the international debate on controlling illegal drugs. Políticas sobre la cannabis remedies this gap in the literature and helps set medical research on cannabis into a prominent place in the political debate about drug use.

Wilfred has a moose: Marcel. It is true that Marcel isn’t always a good pet because he does not
follow the rules, but he does obey the most important ones. After all, he is a good friend, or so it seems, until the day a random old woman claims he belongs to her: “You’re back, Rodrigo!” Alfredo returns home, alone and upset: his best friend is gone, he is now with his rightful owner! But, do friends really belong to us? A moose of many names gives us the answer in this entertaining story.

Young Juan had wings instead of ears. Little Jorge
liked to eat the walls of his bedroom. The six-legged monster Chavela Ortiz roamed the streets of the city of Chihuahua. These are some of the characters in Leche del sueño, in which surrealist artist and writer Leonora Carrington recorded some of her most intimate and endearing visions in the stories she made up for her children. The first facsimile edition of Leche del sueño, this publication preserves the visual poetry of the original words and pictures.

the king tell his guard? When the secret is passed from one person to another, what will it say by the time the
message reaches Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, or the chief of the Amazons? The rumor that travels through this entertaining book changes from one person to the next, but it also changes each person who hears it and whispers it into the next ear. There is a new surprise on every page! Would you like to join the game?

Max Ernst was a painter, a bird, a fish.
He climbed thoughts and flew without even losing the ground. With papers and flowers, books and maps, he could be transported to the realm of the impossible. His dreams taught him to love and the flight of birds taught him to paint portraits. Who was Max? This book answers the question as he himself would have done, with images that evoke the freedom of dreams: Max was many things at once, because he was an artist.

Grandfather is an avid reader and is proud of
his grandson Hugo. Hugo loves his grandfather but wishes he would tell him more stories
about what he reads. One day Grandfather suffers an attack that hurts his ability to talk. Now, when he speaks, he mixes together bits of everything he has read and it comes out in a long, tangled string of ideas about all sorts of different things. Hugo is fascinated by the transformation. Now he can ask his grandfather many questions and get the most unpredictable answers.

One night, when she was a child, Laura awoke
to discover that she wasn’t alone: beside her bed, a woman’s beautiful and solemn face gazed down at her. Enchanted by her visitor’s smile, Laura went back to sleep. Suddenly, two needles seemed to sink into her chest… Now Laura is a sensitive, lonely young woman. Isolated in her father’s old castle, she longs for company and friendship. Her father has offered lodging to a mysterious traveler, who might just be the friend she needs. Attraction and fear are muddled together when Laura sees the face of their guest: it’s the apparition from her childhood.

Lucy has decided to catch the flies that, zigzagging among the pages of her workbook, keep her from concentrating.
She will use a net woven of words and silences: the net of her lines. Bit by bit, the insects that the little girl catches in her poem invade her imagination: the radio buzzes, her sister is a larva, her grandmother’s glasses are multifaceted eyes; she herself can fly, transformed by the power of poetry into a fly with fragile wings. The lines of this poetry collection buzz and prance, inviting the reader to accompany the insects—and Lucy—in their whimsical flight.
