0The Guiding System, the new way to create your electrical installations
A comprehensive offer of products with consistent design
The Guiding System is first and foremost a Merlin Gerin product offer covering all electrical distribution needs. However, what makes all the difference is that these products have been designed to operate togheter: mechanical and electrical compatibility, interoperability, modularity, communication. Thus the electrical installation is both optimised and more efficient: better continuity of supply, enhanced safety for people and equipment, guaranteed upgradeability, effective monitoring and control.
Tools to simplify design and implementation
With the Guiding System, you have a comprehensive range of tools - the Guiding Tools - that will help you increase your product knowledge and product utilisation. Of course this is in compliance with current standards and procedures. These tools include technical booklets and guides, design aid software, training courses, etc. and are regularly updated.
For a genuine partnership with you
Because each electrical installation is unique, there is no standard solution. With the Guiding System, the variety of combinations allows for genuine customisation solutions. You can create and implement electrical installations to meet your creative requirements and design knowledge. You and Merlin Gerins Guiding System form a genuine partnership.
For more details on the Guiding System, consult www.merlin-gerin.com
0A consistent design of offers from Medium Voltage to Low Voltage
All Merlin Gerin offers are designed according to electrical, mechanical and communication consistency rules. The products express this consistency by their overall design and shared ergonomics.
Electrical consistency:
Each product complies with or enhances system performance at co-ordination level: breaking capacity, Isc, temperature rise, etc. for more safety, continuity of supply (discrimination) or economic optimisation (cascading). The leading edge technologies employed in Merlin Gerins Guiding System ensure high performance levels in discrimination and cascading of protection devices, electrodynamic withstand of switches and current distributors, heat loss of devices, distribution blocks and enclosures.Likewise, inter-product ElectroMagnetic Compatibilty (EMC) is guaranteed.Discrimination guarantees co-ordination between the operating characteristics of serial-connected circuit-breakers. Should a
fault occurs downstream, only the circuit-breaker placed immediately upstream from the fault will trip.
Mechanical consistency:
Each product adopts dimensional standards simplifying and optimising its use within the system. It shares the same accessories and auxiliaries and complies with global ergonomic choices (utilisation mode, operating mode, setting and configuration devices, tools, etc.) making its installation and operation within the system a simpler process.
Direct connection of the Canalis KT busbar trunking on the Masterpact 3200 A circuit breaker.
Communication consistency:
Each product complies with global choices in terms of communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet, etc.) for simplified integration in the management, supervision and monitoring systems.
Thanks to the use of standard Web technologies, you can offer your customers intelligent Merlin Gerin switchboards allowing easy access to information: follow-up of currents, voltages, powers, consumption history, etc.
Guiding Tools for more efficient design and implementation of your installations.

6continuity of supplyContinuity of supply is a need that mustalways be satisfied by electrical installations, along with the protection of life and property. The IT system provides the best guaranteein terms of continuity of supply. Even when afirst insulation fault is present, the installationcan continue to supply power withoutendangering human life. The first fault musthowever be detected and repaired before asecond fault occurs.

Insulation monitoring is provided on ITsystems to detect and indicate insulationfaults as soon as they occur. The basic function is carried out by anInsulation Monitoring Device (IMD), alsoreferred to in certain documentation as apermanent or continuous insulation monitor(PIM or CIM respectively). The monitoringdevice injects a DC or low-frequencyAC voltage between the installation andearth. The insulation resistance is determinedfrom the resulting current. This technique canbe used on all types of installations: AC, DC,rectified, mixed AC/DC, etc.
measuring, indicating andlocating insulation faultsVigilohm System, with or without acommunication bus, fulfils the followingbasic functions:c measurement of insulation level on alltypes of installationsc manual or automatic locating of insulationfaults.
Vigilohm System with acommunication busThe communication bus adds the followingpossibilities:c measurement of the insulation resistanceand earth leakage capacitance of eachcircuitc centralisation of fault locatingmeasurements on the IMD display unitsc communication with a supervisor(transmission of measurements andreception of settings).

36off-line insulationmonitoringThe failure of a motor to start can haveserious consequences. This is especiallytrue in the following applications:c safety equipment (fire pumps, smokeextractors, etc.);c production (glass works, cement plants, etc.);c manufacturing processes (rolling mills, etc.).Motors often fail to start due to insulationproblems caused by the humidity thataccumulates in the microscopic cracks of theinsulation during periods when the motor isnot running. The SM21 device monitors theinsulation of critical motors while they areoff-line. Insulation faults give rise to analarm or motor starting lock-out.

fault locatingOnce detected, an insulation fault must belocated and eliminated in order to guaranteemaximum continuity of supply.Manual fault locatingThe fault is located by testing different pointsin the installation, one after another, using aVigilohm System XRM mobile receiver and acurrent probe. The receiver captures thelow-frequency fault locating signal. Two cases may be encountered:c the installation is equipped with an XM200or XM300C insulation monitoring device(Vigilohm System). In this case, the manual system is used tofine-tune the results of the automaticlocating systemc the installation (relatively small or anisolated sub-system) is equipped with aninsulation monitoring device for DC injection. In this case, a Vigilohm XGR portablegenerator is used together with an XRMreceiver.

communication featuresIn addition to displaying the insulation valuesit measures for the installation as a whole, aninsulation monitoring device can also providea centralised display for informationconcerning specific circuits. It receives thisinformation from communicating insulationfault locators and detectors distributedthroughout the installation. All this informationmay also be transmitted to a remotesupervisory system. These communication features satisfy theoperating requirements of modern electricalinstallations. All information concerning theinsulation can be transmitted via acommunication bus for display on acentralised insulation monitoring device or toa supervision system for centralisedprocessing and management.
prevention of insulationfaultsPrevention is the best way to ensure thecontinuity of supply of electrical installations. It may be applied in two ways:c the insulation monitoring device signals adrop in the insulation resistance below anon-critical prevention threshold determinedby the user;c the measurements are transmitted to asupervisor, which can then process them topredict insulation faults on ageing cables. These indications can be used to schedulepreventive maintenance.

Other functionsc measurement of the true insulationresistancec measurement of the earth leakagecapacitancec indication of transient faultsc prevention alarm when the insulationresistance falls below a non-criticalthreshold determined by the user;c remote interrogation and display, from theinsulation monitoring device, of faultsdetected by the fault locatorsc setting of alarm thresholds from asupervisorc ...The system evolves with the needs of theinstallation. New devices can be added atany time to adapt to installationmodifications or provide higher levels ofmonitoring.
insensitivity to electricaldisturbancesThe Vigilohm System offers bothmeasurement accuracy and insensitivity toelectrical disturbances. Designed to operateon modern installations, it is not affected bythe harmonics generated by loads such asvariable speed drives, UPSs and switch-mode power supplies.
easier operation ofIT systemsAn installation implementing the IT system,i.e. isolated from earth or connected to earththrough a sufficiently high impedance, givestop priority to continuity of supply.Today, the operation of such installationscan be greatly facilitated by the use ofdevices that offer functions going far beyondthe simple fault signalling imposed bystandards.
... with Vigilohm SystemVigilohm System is a range of Merlin Gerinproducts meeting the needs of IT systems interms of performance, practical operationand continuity of supply. This range features modular design. It ismade up of Insulation Monitoring Devices(IMDs) and fault detection and locatingdevices. Some of these devices makeindependent measurements of the insulationresistance on each circuit. In addition, the Vigilohm System cancommunicate with a supervisor or PLC.
principle and functionsThe basic device is the InsulationMonitoring Device (IMD). It injects a low-frequency AC voltage between earth and theinstallation. Based on a measurement of theresulting current, the Vigilohm Systemaccurately determines the true insulationresistance of the installation and its earthcoupling capacitance. This technique can beused on all types of installations: AC, DC,rectified, mixed, etc.Fault locating is the main functionassociated with insulation monitoring.Toroids placed on the various circuitscapture a signal proportional to the currentinjected by the insulation monitoring device. This signal is transmitted to fault detectionand locating devices which automaticallyidentify any faulty circuit.Distributed measurements of theinsulation resistance and the earth leakagecapacitance are possible on each circuit viathe toroids used for fault locating.Centralisation on a supervisor. Via acommunication bus using JBUS protocol, the Vigilohm System can forward allmeasurements, information and events to asupervisor. In this way, the supervisormaintains full knowledge on the insulationstatus of the overall installation and theindividually monitored circuits. Thesupervisor (or PLC) can be connected to aprinter to log all events occurring on theinstallation, complete with location andtimestamp.Adaptation to variable installationconfigurations. The system automaticallyexcludes all but one insulation monitoringdevice connected to the same set ofbusbars.

This interface cannot beused with XL308/316 or XML308/316devices and connects only to the XM300Cand XD308C (the XLI200 cannot be usedwith XML monitoring-locating devices or withXL locating devices).c the XLI300 interface, for the transmissionof measurements and measurementparameters from the XM300C and XD308Cdevices to a supervisor. This interface isused on single busbar installations. The

the power of acommunicating systemThe power of the Vigilohm System lies in thecapacity it offers for communication betweenall its devices, thereby ensuring insulationmonitoring and complementary functionssuch as automatic locating of faults or theanticipation of their occurrence. In addition, the Vigilohm System is capableof communicating with a supervisor or aPLC, i.e. it can both transmit data to andreceive data from such units. The transfer of information takes place:c via the internal Vigilohm System bus forcommunication between the devices;c via the external JBUS for communicationwith a supervisor or PLC.In both cases, the use of an internal orexternal bus requires a communicationinterface.

Thisinterface is required for installations withmultiple busbars and bus coupler circuitbreakers. It manages the exclusion of otherinsulation monitoring devices found on thesame installation and the link between thelocators and their corresponding insulationmonitoring devices;c the XAS interface, indispensable for theoperation of the communication bus in theabsence of one of the three other interfaces.

Vigilohm: presentationVigilohm System:two examples of installations
automatic fault locatingwith or without supervisionThe following examples cover two typicalinstallation configurations with insulationmonitoring and fault locating systems.Example 1:c automatic fault locating with localdisplay. The use of an XM200 insulation monitoringdevice together with XD301 and XD312detectors represents the typical caseproviding basic detection and automaticlocating of insulation faults on the mainfeeders as well as on certain secondaryfeeders.Fault locating can be fine-tuned using anXRM mobile receiver and a current probe todetermine the exact location of the fault onthe faulty circuit. The auto-exclusion of other XM200 insulationmonitoring devices is controlled by the circuitbreaker position indication contacts.
Example 2:c measurement and automatic faultlocating with local and centraliseddisplay, for an installation with more thanone set of busbars and a bus couplingcircuit breaker. The measurement of the insulationresistance on the main feeders is provided inaddition to fault detection with automaticlocating (XL308/316 and XML308/316).The secondary feeders are monitored simplyby an XD312/301 detector or by an XD308Cdetector that communicates detected faults tothe supervisor (via the XTU300 interface). The architecture of the installation (severalsources and sets of busbars) makes itnecessary to use an XTU300 interface tohandle the exclusion of other insulationmonitoring devices and the link between thelocators and their corresponding insulationmonitoring devices.

Continuity of supply is the requirement that most oftenleads designers to chose the IT system for an electricalinstallation. This requirement may apply to the entire installation(e.g. chemical process plant, steel plant, etc.).Such an installation requires continuous monitoring ofthe insulation level.

The requirement for continuity of supply may apply toonly a part of an installation, for example a single shopor plant, or a circuit subject to special conditions(safety lighting). In this case, it is recommended to use the IT systemfor this part of the installation, whatever the systemused for general distribution.
In many cases, the use of direct current corresponds toa need for continuity of supply. The use of an ITsystem and insulation monitoring is thereforeconsistent with this choice.
The use of motors in industrial processes creates a furtherneed for insulation monitoring. By checking the insulationwith power off, the presence of insulation faults can bedetermined before starting motors (fire pumps, smokeextractors, etc.). It is also possible to prevent motor startingautomatically if the insulation resistance is below a certainthreshold.

basic function: overallinsulation monitoringThe XM300C provides overall insulationmonitoring of electrical installations byinjecting a low-frequency AC voltagebetween the installation and earth.
main functionsc measurement:v insulation resistance,v earth leakage capacitance;c indications:v satisfactory insulation resistance (greenlight on bargraph),v drop in insulation resistance: below prevention threshold (orange lighton bargraph and relay actuated), below fault threshold (red light on bargraphand two relays actuated, including one witha failsafe feature),v transient faults (orange light);c display:v measurements,v events detected by any XL308/316locators connected. All this data is accessible locally on the LCDscreen of the insulating monitoring deviceand remotely via the Vigilohm System bus.
additional functions withother devicesLocating of faulty circuitsThis function is obtained by using theXM300C together with:c XL308 and XL316 locators connected to 8or 16 toroids. They are linked to theXM300C by the Vigilohm System bus;c XD308C communicating detectors. Theyare linked to the XM300C by the VigilohmSystem bus, and connected to the toroidsplaced on the circuits to be monitored;c XD301 and XD312 detectors connected tothe toroids placed on the circuits to bemonitored;c an XRM mobile receiver and a currentprobe to fine-tune the automatic locatingresults. All these devices can be combined on agiven installation.Distributed measurementsThis function is provided by combining anXM300C monitoring device (or anXML308/316 monitoring-locating device)with XL308 or XL316 locators. These locators measure the insulationresistance and the earth leakagecapacitance of each of the circuits. They have a fault alarm threshold that canbe set to a different levels for each channel.
Vigilohm: functions and characteristicscommunicating Vigilohm SystemXM300C insulation monitoring device
communicationCommunication with the supervision system. The XLI300 and XTU300 interfaces allowmonitoring devices + locators+ communicating detectors to exchangeinformation with a supervision system viaJBUS protocol. The XLI300 and XTU300 interfaces connectto the Vigilohm System bus and allowtimestamping of insulation monitoringevents.
configuration managementOn installations with a number of insulationmonitoring devices installed to covervariable configurations, only one device at atime can be allowed to inject a voltagebetween earth and the installationdownstream of the incoming circuit breaker. For this reason, the system must managethe exclusion of other connected insulationmonitoring devices. In addition, each locatormust identify the monitoring device fromwhich it is to capture the signal. The exclusion of monitoring devices andtheir identification by the locators is handledin one of the following manners:c by the XTU300 interface for multiplebusbar installations;c by the XLI300 interface for single busbarinstallations. In both cases, the circuit breaker positionindication contacts are wired to the all-or-nothing inputs of the XM300C orXML308/316.If only XD308C detectors are associatedwith the XM300C, monitoring deviceexclusion is handled by the XLI200 interface.
standardsThe XM300C insulation monitoring devicecomplies with the following standards:c IEC 364, parts 4 and 5;c class CPI/XA of UTE C 63-080.It is implemented in accordance withstandard NF C 15-100 paragraph 413.4;c IEC 61557-8.
installation and connectionc horizontal flush mounting on the front faceof a cubicle or enclosure;c easy mounting in Prisma enclosures usingthe corresponding mounting plates and frontplates that come with the appropriatecut-outs;c the devices are interconnected by shieldedcables (double 0.75 mm2 twisted pairs). The resistance between the two most distantpoints must not exceed 12 .The coupling capacitance between pairsmust not exceed 250 nF;c if no XTU300 or XLI300 interface isincluded, operation of the Vigilohm Systembus will require an XAS interface.

Vigilohm: functions and characteristicscommunicating Vigilohm SystemXML308 and XML316 monitoring-locating devices
basic function: overall andindividual circuit insulationmonitoringXML308 and XML316 monitoring-locatingdevices combine the functions of:c the XM300C insulation monitoring device;c XL308 or XL316 insulation fault locators. They monitor the insulation of:v the overall installation by injection of a low-frequency AC voltage between theinstallation and earth,v 8 or 16 individual circuits via detectiontoroids.
main functionsccccc measurement:v insulation resistance of the overallinstallation and each monitored circuit,v earth leakage capacitance of the overallinstallation and each monitored circuit;c indications:v satisfactory insulation resistance (greenlight),v drop in insulation resistance: for the overall installation, belowprevention threshold (orange light and relayactuated), for the overall installation and eachmonitored circuit, below adjustable faultthreshold (red light and two relays actuated, including one with a failsafe feature),v transient faults on the overall installation(orange light), with storage in memory of thethree last values,v faulty circuit by 8 or 16 indicator lights (1 for each circuit);c display:v measurements,v events detected by any XL308/316locators connected. All this data is accessible locally on the LCDscreen of the insulating monitoring deviceand remotely via the Vigilohm System bus.
additional functions withother devicesIt is possible to monitor more than 8 or 16circuits by adding any of the followingdevices:c XL308 or XL316 locators that measure theinsulation resistance on each additionalcircuit;c XD308C communicating detectors thatautomatically detect the faulty circuit andcommunicate via an XLI300 or XTU300interface;c XD301 and XD312 detectors thatautomatically detect the faulty circuit andprovide local indications. The communicating detectors and locatorsare connected to the XML308/316 via theVigilohm System bus.
communicationCommunication with the supervision system. The XLI300 and XTU300 interfaces allowmonitoring devices + locators+ communicating detectors to exchangeinformation with a supervision system viaJBUS protocol. The XLI300 and XTU300 interfaces connectto the Vigilohm System bus and allowtimestamping of insulation monitoring events.
configuration managementOn installations with a number of insulationmonitoring devices installed to cover variableconfigurations, only one device at a time canbe allowed to inject a voltage between earthand the installation downstream of theincoming circuit breaker. For this reason, thesystem must manage the exclusion of otherconnected insulation monitoring devices. Inaddition, each locator must identify themonitoring device from which it is to capturethe signal. The exclusion of monitoring devices and theiridentification by the locators is handled in oneof the following manners:c by the XTU300 interface for multiple busbarinstallations with bus coupling;c by the XLI300 interface for single busbarinstallations. In both cases, the circuit breaker positionindication contacts are wired to the all-or-nothing inputs of the XM300C orXML308/316.
standardsThe XML308 and XML316 devices complywith the following standards:c IEC 364, parts 4 and 5;c class CPI/XA and DLD/M of UTE C 63-080.They are implemented in accordance withstandard NF C 15-100 paragraph 413.4;c IEC 61557-8.
toroidsThe XML308 and XML316 devices operatewith type A and OA toroids. They are alsocompatible with type XS toroids.
installation and connectionc horizontal flush mounting on the front faceof a cubicle or enclosurec easy mounting in Prisma enclosures usingthe corresponding mounting plates and frontplates that come with the appropriate cut-outs;c the devices are interconnected by shieldedcables (double 0.75 mm2 twisted pairs). Theresistance between the two most distantpoints must not exceed 12 .The coupling capacitance between pairs mustnot exceed 250 nF;c connection of toroids using twisted, shieldedcable (1 pair);c if no XTU300 or XLI300 interface isincluded, operation of the Vigilohm Systembus will require an XAS interface.

basic functionlocal fault detectionXD301 and XD312 insulation fault detectorshave two functions:c fault detection (with respect to the faultthreshold);c automatic locating of the faulty circuit.
operationc XD301 and XD312 insulation faultdetectors are fixed receivers used with (butnot connected to) XM300C, XML308/316and XM200 insulation monitoring devices.Via measurement toroids, they detect andautomatically locate insulation faultsc the XD312 detector, with 12 channelsconnected to a maximum of 12 toroidsinstalled on different circuits of theinstallation, includes the following featureson its front face:v 12 fault indicator lights corresponding tothe 12 channels,v a selector to enable or disable latching oftransient fault indications until reset;c detector XD301 is a single-channelversion designed for use with onemeasurement toroid.
installation and connectionc live parts in an insulated case with asealable transparent cover. Width equal to 8(XD301) or 12 (XD312) 9 mm widthmodules;c horizontal flush or surface mounting onDIN rail;c tunnel terminals for 1.5 mm2 wires.
toroidsXD301 and XD312 insulation fault detectorsoperate with type A and OA toroids. Theyare also compatible with the older type Nand O toroids.

Vigilohm: functions and characteristicsXRM mobile fault locating receiverand current probes
operationThe XRM mobile receiver, used with acurrent probe, is mainly intended as anenhancement to automatic fault locatingsystems. It can be placed at various pointsalong a faulty circuit, capturing the signalemitted by an XM300C, XML308/316 orXM200 insulation monitoring device todetermine the exact location of the fault.Three current probes are available, theXM15, XP50 and XP100.The set of live conductors to be tested musthave a maximum diameter of 12, 50and 100 mm respectively.
displayThe XRM receiver displays a numberfrom 0 to 19, corresponding to the insulationlevel:c 0: no fault;c 19: solid fault (no insulation).

Vigilohm: functions and characteristicsVigilohm TR22A and TR22AH insulation monitoring devices
(1) For the TR22A, the upper limit is extended to this value by adding a P1 subassembly. This is not possible for the TR22AH.(2) Failsafe: the relay is disactivated either on occurrence of a fault or if the auxiliary supply voltage accidentally fails.(3) Locating signal changeover switch: this device identifies the faulty feeder during locating by opening each feeder in turn. When the faulty feeder is opened, the alarm sounds.(4) Suitable for use in all climates:c damp heat, equipment not operating (IEC 60068-2-30)c damp heat, equipment operating (IEC 60068-2-56)c salt mist (IEC 60068-2-52).
