The “mascaret”(from the Gascon word « mascaret ») is

a phenomenum of sudden rising water

level in a river or estuary, caused by the

wave of the rising tide during extreme

tidal conditions. This only happens in

certain rivers when the current is

disturbed by the rising tidal flows. The

most spectacular mascarets can be

observed at The River Severn, England,

The Amazon, Brazil, The Quiantang,

China and The Gironde, France. Pictured

here is St Pardon, Dordogne showing
