UrbanPondTM UrbanPondTM is a modular precast concrete underground storage system that mimics the function of ponds and open detention basins. Each module is only 8 feet square which minimizes pick weight and crane size requirements. The modular design can be placed under roadways, parking lots and landscape areas in various shapes, sizes, and depths.

UrbanPond’s unique square tessellation assembly provides superior strength and material efficiency over traditional rectangular modules. Its high void percentages maximize stormwater volume and the robust precast form allows it to be buried deeper without the need for specialized backfill, increased wall thickness, or extra rebar reinforcement.

Applications UrbanPond is engineered specifically for:

• Detention with controlled discharge utilizing built-in outlet orifice structures.

• Retention for long-term retention of runoff on-site to meet strict stormwater requirements.

• Harvesting self-contained treatment and reuse of stormwater for irrigation and grey water needs.

• Capture & Infiltration of runoff back into underlying native soils for recharge needs.

• Treatment utilized as an underground extended detention basin or pond for advanced treatment of stormwater - integrates well with treatment train components (biofiltration, separation, etc.).

• Flood Control of peak storm events to minimize downstream flooding and erosion.

• Low Impact Development to maximize land use with underground storage - construct an urban infill without a pond, at grade.

Specifications UrbanPond is available with inside heights ranging from 3 feet to 14 feet, in 6-inch increments. Single UrbanPond Modules are available with inside heights ranging from 3 feet to 7 feet, in 6-inch increments, and the Double UrbanPond Modules are available up to 14 feet. The system’s internal offset leg configuration provides channel-less water distribution for stormwater entering and exiting the system.

UrbanPondTM Configurations UrbanPond is a modular precast concrete structure that can be assembled from one to several hundred modules in various shapes and configurations to meet site-specific constraints and volume requirements. Each UrbanPond module is 8 feet wide x 8 feet long (outside dimension) - specifically designed to fit on a standard flatbed truck. UrbanPond can be configured in a combination of modules from as low as 3 feet to as high as 14 feet (inside height).

UrbanPond Assembly The UrbanPond is based on a square tessellation. A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated, covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Because of the self-supporting characteristic of tessellated-shaped structures, Bio Clean has been able to reduce material usage further and costs up to 20% without sacrificing structural strength. As shown in the image to the left, the offset leg configuration of the modules creates a very open and channel-less internal space. In any configuration, each module provides access walkways greater than 3 feet wide for easy access to every module.

Installation Each Single UrbanPond Module is 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. long (O.D.) and easily fits onto a flatbed truck. This size maximizes the space on each truckload. A 12 foot Double UrbanPond Module (two pieces) weighs only 20,000 lbs. total, or only 10,000 lbs. per piece. As many as 4 individual pieces can be delivered on a single truckload to reduce shipping costs and minimize crane requirements during install. Most units can be installed using a simple backhoe due to low weights.

Maintenance UrbanPond is designed to be easily accessed and maintained from finished surface via multiple access ports. Using a standard vacuum truck, each access point is conveniently located, as ports are strategically placed throughout the assembly. Modules can be modified to act as clear wells or pretreatment chambers for capturing trash, debris, and sediment. This consolidates maintenance requirements to a select few modules. Standard manholes, hinged manholes, and other access hatches are available.

Modular Wetlands® Linear Specifications Flow-Based DesignsThe Modular Wetlands® Linear can be used in stand-alone applications to meet treatment flow requirements, and since it is the only biofiltration system that can accept inflow pipes several feet below the surface, it can be used not only in decentralized design applications but also as a large central end-of-the-line application for maximum feasibility.

BIOFILTRATION PRODUCTS

Volume-Based DesignsIn the example above, the Modular Wetlands Linear is installed downstream of the UrbanPond storage system. The Modular Wetlands Linear is designed for the water quality volume and will treat and discharge the required volume within local draindown time requirements.

The Modular Wetlands Linear’s unique horizontal flow design, gives it benefits no other biofilter has - the ability to be placed downstream of detention ponds, extended dry detention basins, underground storage systems and permeable paver reservoirs. The system’s horizontal flow configuration and built-in orifice control allows it to be installed with just 6” of fall between inlet and outlet pipe for a simple connection to projects with shallow downstream tie-in points.

Modular Wetlands® Linear Configurations The Modular Wetlands® System Linear is the preferred biofiltration system of civil engineers across the country due to its versatile design. This highly versatile system has available “pipe-in” options on most models, along with built-in curb or grated inlets for simple integration into your storm drain design.

Curb TypeThe Curb Type configuration accepts sheet flow through a curb opening and is commonly used along roadways and parking lots. It can be used in sump or flow-by conditions. Length of curb opening varies based on model and size.

Grate TypeThe Grate Type configuration offers the same features and benefits as the Curb Type but with a grated/drop inlet above the systems pretreatment chamber. It has the added benefit of allowing pedestrian access over the inlet. ADA-compliant grates are available to ensure easy and safe access. The Grate Type can also be used in scenarios where runoff needs to be intercepted on both sides of landscape islands.

Vault TypeThe system’s patented horizontal flow biofilter is able to accept inflow pipes directly into the pretreatment chamber, meaning the Modular Wetlands® can be used in end-of-the-line installations. This greatly improves feasibility over typical decentralized designs that are required with other biofiltration/bioretention systems. Another benefit of the “pipe-in” design is the ability to install the system downstream of underground detention systems to meet water quality volume requirements.

Downspout TypeThe Downspout Type is a variation of the Vault Type and is designed to accept a vertical downspout pipe from rooftop and podium areas. Some models have the option of utilizing an internal bypass, simplifying the overall design. The system can be installed as a raised planter, and the exterior can be stuccoed or covered with other finishes to match the look of adjacent buildings.

Orientations Side-by-SideThe Side-by-Side orientation places the pretreatment and discharge chamber adjacent to one another with the biofiltration chamber running parallel on either side.

End-to-EndThe End-To-End orientation places the pretreatment and discharge chambers on opposite ends of the biofiltration chamber, therefore minimizing the width of the system to 5 ft. (outside dimension).

BypassInternal Bypass Weir End-to-EndThe Side-by-Side orientation places the pretreatment and discharge chambers adjacent to one another allowing for integration of internal bypass.

External Diversion Weir StructureThis traditional offline diversion method can be used with the Modular Wetlands Linear in scenarios where runoff is being piped to the system.

Flow-by-DesignThis method is one in which the system is placed just upstream of a standard curb or grate inlet to intercept the first flush. Higher flows simply pass by the Modular Wetlands and into the standard inlet downstream.

Dvert Low-Flow DiversionThis simple yet innovative diversion trough can be installed in existing or new curb and grate inlets to divert the first flush to the Modular Wetlands Linear.

WetlandMod® Operation Horizontal flow biofiltration systems allow sediments to accumulate adjacent to the media bed, drastically reducing clogging, and focusing maintenance attention to one area; for long-term efficiency and treatment quality. WetlandMod’s horizontal design also allows water to consistently flow subsurface, clear of obstructions in a more controlled state.

Compared to Alternative Downward Flow Bioretention Systems Bioretention systems have an inherent flaw — the force of gravity. As stormwater runoff carries pollutants into the system, including sediments and hydrocarbons, they are deposited on top of the bioretention media where it accumulates and quickly clogs the filter media. It has been documented that sediment accumulation from just a few storm events can completely clog a bioretention system. This leads to drastically reduced infiltration rates, expensive maintenance burdens, and safety issues associated with standing water, depressed landscaping, and vector control.

Biofiltration Chamber The patented void area maximizes surface area and minimizes footprint, saving space and money. The unique design accomplishes this by allowing water to penetrate the media bed, not only from the top, but from each side.

Configurations WetlandMod is constructed from modular precast concrete structures. The system can be configured as standard curb type, multiple inlet pipes, and/or grate options into the pretreatment chamber with optional internal bypass. The biofiltration chambers can be designed for various length and width combinations (shown below) to allow for easy integration with parking lot island designs. The system comes in two standard widths: 5 feet (18” minimum media requirement - San Diego County and Bay Area Region) and 6 feet (24” minimum media requirement - Los Angeles County).

Highly ModularOur standard 6-foot single row and 11-foot double row models, for 24” soil media thickness, are commonly used together to meet wide design requirements and address transportation challenges.

Maintenance A quick and easy maintenance regimen begins with a simple design, and the WetlandMod features benefits that no other bioretention system can replicate. First, the WetlandMod’s pretreatment chamber can be accessed via a manhole cover or grate, providing consolidated access to most of the trash, debris, and sediment. The perimeter void areas are more easily accessible with a conventional vacuum truck, allowing plant beds to remain undisturbed.

Downward flow systems filter water in a single vertical direction.

Pollutants and sediment build up on the media bed, impeding flow.

Sediment and debris entering the WetlandMod accumulates adjacent to vertical media surface, reducing clogging.

The vertical ponding area (void area) maximizes sedimentation and minimizes clogging issues.

Debris Separating Baffle Box (DSBB) The Debris Separating Baffle Box (DSBB) uses hydrodynamic separation and a non-clogging screening system to capture pollutants and store trash and debris in a dry state. Trash and debris are then suspended above the sedimentation chambers, which makes cleaning easier while minimizing nutrient leaching, bacterial growth, and bad odors.

The DSBB’s triple-chambered design provides higher removals of total suspended solids over a wide range of particle sizes, including the finest particles, and the deflector shields ensure no scouring of captured sediments during high flow. This feature allows the system to be installed in-line, thus eliminating the need for diversion structures while the oil skimmer and optional hydrocarbon booms trap oil.

Pretreatment and DiversionBuilt-in diversion eliminates the need for diversion structures, and the DSBB can be easily designed upstream of the Bio Clean UrbanPond storage system.

Advantages • Dual-stage treatment (screening and

separation)• Enhanced 3-chambered separation

• Separates trash and debris from sediment and water

• Easily installed in-line (low head loss)

Debris Separating Baffle Box (DSBB) Operation • Splitter Screen directs flows to the filtration screens and provides additional screen flow capacity. Non-clogging for

continuous maintenance-free treatment.• Filtration Screen collects and stores trash, debris, organics, and oxygen demanding substances above standing water in

a dry state.• Turbulence Deflectors prevent resuspension of captured pollutants.• Sediment Chambers maximize TSS removal and eliminate scouring during extreme flow rates.• Skimmer and Boom collect hydrocarbons and control flow velocity which improves removal efficiency

Trash, debris, and organics are captured in the filtration screen as sediments settle to the bottom chambers. Hydrocarbons are removed and absorbed by the boom.

The Bio Clean DSBB SeparatorThe DSBB stores trash, debris, and organics in a screening system separated from the water below. This separation prevents odor, bacterial growth, nutrient leaching, and septic conditions, and the shallow profile minimizes maintenance cost:• Less shoring• Perfect for areas with high groundwater

Between storm eventsDuring storm events

Trash, debris, and organics are stored in a suspended screen system allowing pollutants to dry out between storm events. This eliminates septic conditions and prevents leaching of plant-based organics into water.

Compared to Other SeparatorsIn other separators, trash, debris, and organics are captured and stored in standing water. Standing water promotes nutrient leaching, bad odors, bacterial growth, and complicates maintenance.• High excavation cost• Extra shoring• Challenge with shallow groundwater

SciCLONE® Separator The SciCLONE® is the first separator to offer complete and efficient hydrodynamic separation.Stormwater separators have been used for more than 20 years, yet no technology has been able to combine all necessary features required for a truly effective system. The SciCLONE's simple design allows for high TSS removal efficiencies (80% for a particle size distribution typically found in stormwater runoff), internal bypass, and efficient capture/retention of free-floating oils and trash.

For enhanced sediment removal, the SciCLONE’s inlet flow splitter redirects inlet flows away from the center of the chamber in two directions along the system's perimeter. From there, the flow goes toward the oil skimmer, along the skimmer wall, and back toward the inlet in the middle of the chamber creating twoswirling vortexes. This feature maximizes flow path and directs fine sediment to settle out back below the inlet. In addition, the system can accept multiple inflow pipes at various angles for easy placement.

SciCLONE® Separator Operation The SciCLONE's flow splitter reduces inlet velocities and directs flow to the perimeter of the structure in two directions. As the flow reaches the oil skimmer, it is directed to the center and then back toward the inlet to maximize flow path and settling of finer TSS. This also creates a calm area for the collection of floatables and hydrocarbons behind the oil/floatables skimmer.

The outlet weir provides a long and even surface for flows to pass over. By distributing the flow out of the system evenly, exit velocities are also reduced which helps to maximize the available area within the system for hydrodynamic separation.

Installation Installation of the SciCLONE is quick and easy. The system is composed of a base section, a middle riser with holes for pipe connections and internals pre-installed, a top, and risers to bring access to finish surface and access covers. Installation of the system follows the same procedures as standard manhole installation. We carry the structures in inventory allowing for short lead times to meet your project schedule.

Maintenance We have always taken pride in providing systems that are not only effective at treating stormwater but also incredibly easy to maintain. We believe that a stormwater BMP is only as good as its maintenance. Therefore, BMPs must be easy to clean for them to be effective.

The SciCLONE provides better maintenance access than any other hydrodynamic separator on the market. The entire sump of the system is accessible and can be viewed from the finish surface. Unlike other systems that have only a small cleaning port, the SciCLONE is fully open from top to bottom. As shown below, the system can be accessed from both sides of the skimmer wall with a sump chamber spanning the entire diameter of the structure.

Deflective Screening Device (DSD) The Deflective Screening Device (DSD) is a highly effective screening hydrodynamic separator designed to meet Full Trash Capture requirements along with providing efficient hydrodynamic separation. The device is highly reliable, as it has no moving parts and provides great longevity due to the use of highly durable materials.

The DSD utilizes a unique and effective non-clogging screening design that ensures high treatment flow rates are maintained between maintenance intervals. The special screen has opposite facing openings from the flow direction of incoming stormwater. As water enters the treatment chamber, it spins in a clockwise direction, which creates a continuous cleaning effect against the surface of the screen.

In addition to efficient trash capture utilizing a screen that captures 100% of particles down to 5 mm, its simpledesign allows for 80% TSS removal efficiencies for a particle size distribution typically found in stormwater runoff. The system also offers an internal bypass and efficient capture and retention of free-floating oils and floatable trash. The system can accept multiple inflow pipes at various angles for easy placement, and the DSD is designed for easy cleaning, maintained with a standard vacuum truck from the surface, without having to enterinto the system.

Deflective Screening Device (DSD) Operation Stormwater runoff may enter the DSD via one or more inlet pipes or by grated inlet. Water enters the inlet bay where it is directed to the curved inlet channel. This channel is curved and directs flow into the vortex chamber at an increased velocity along its inner wall creating a clockwise - flowing vortex.

This vortex helps to capture all trash, debris, and suspended solids in the center of the chamber. It continues downward into the screening cylinder area of the device. The water flow caused by the vortex creates a “self-cleaning” effect along the surface of the screen, preventing clogging of the screen. As treated water passes through the screen, it rises toward the outlet.

The oil baffle traps and retains oils, grease, and other hydrocarbons from flowing toward the outlet. Flows above the screen capacity bypass over the weir and straight to the outlet pipe, preventing any scouring of previously captured trash or sediment during higher flows.

3 Membrane Filtration Peak Capacity As the water level reaches the top of the membrane filters, flow-through will begin. The riser tube creates an upward flow path within each filter to increase performance. Treated water then passes down the riser tube and collects in the underdrain manifold and flows to the discharge chamber.

4 Bypass An optional internal bypass is available with most system configurations. When flows exceed the treatment capacity of the system, the water level rises and goes into bypass. High flows are conveyed from the pretreatment chamber directly to the discharge chamber to prevent scouring of fine sediments captured within the filtration chamber.

Installation The Kraken Filter's small footprint reduces installation and shipping costs, and there is no deep sump chamber (as found with tentacle-type systems), which reduces excavation costs.

Maintenance Lowest lifecycle cost of any media filter with fast and simple maintenance procedures. The system is easily cleaned with a standard vacuum truck, and the reusable filter can be cleaned with a standard garden hose.

As water enters, head pressure builds behind the internal weir to generate the force needed to operate the up-flow filter. As water enters the system, it passes over the first separation chamber, settling out sediment.

As water passes to the second separation chamber, it encounters an oil skimmer which removes hydrocarbons before water is forced under the skimmer and into the up-flow filter chamber. As water rises up, it is forced through the media filtration bed for primary treatment before exiting the system.

Once flow into the system subsides, the water level in the system will start to fall. Once the water level reaches the upper effluent side of the up-flow filter, it can no longer discharge.

The remaining water within the filtration media is forced downward as the draindown filters continue to treat and discharge stormwater. This passive backwash action releases pollutants that would otherwise contribute to long-term clogging and performance issues.

Bio Clean ARSTM The Bio Clean ARS™ (Automatic Retractable Screen) is the industry's most unique and dependable automatic retractable screen system, designed to block trash and debris from entering storm drains during dry weather flows and light to moderate rain.

Each blade moves independently to a controlled level, blocking trash, but allowing water to move freely underneath. The Bio Clean ARS blades can also be adjusted for more restrictive flow or a looser tolerance for increased water capacity, and individually changed for easy maintenance.

Every versatile Bio Clean ARS feature allows the system to adapt to the demands of different locations as well as various types of curb structures, making it one of the most cost-effective and reliable solutions available in the industry.

Bio Clean ARS Advantages Common Disadvantages of Other GatesBlades work independently, so they will not jam. Many gates unlock when water level reaches a certain

height.

As water flow increases each blade reacts separately. Locking gates can get stuck and will not open at all.

If debris gets stuck under a few blades, the overall system remains operational.

Locking gates get stuck in the open position allowing all garbage to pass.

Other Advantages • Minimal parts make this a more cost-effective

and easily maintained design• Quick, easily adjustable installation on all size

catch basin• Plastic blades are durable yet harmless to street

sweeping equipment

• Routine street sweeping is the only maintenance required

• Easily customize-able for curb inlet heights ranging from 2” to 10”

Bio Clean CPSTM The Bio Clean CPS™ (Connector Pipe Screen) is designed to utilize existing catch basins, allowing them to efficiently capture 100% of trash and debris.

The Bio Clean CPS technology can be retrofitted into any curb or drop inlet to help municipalities meet current stormwater regulations and comply with their NPDES or MS4 permit. Bio Clean CPS devices can be used for new site developments as the first line of defense to prevent trash and debris from reaching downstream stormwater BMPs where they can cause clogging and unnecessary maintenance burdens.

Constructed from 100% 304 perforated stainless steel, the system is feasible, effective, and built to last. An innovative curved design with multiple cross supports ensures the device can withstand several hundred pounds of pressure, far exceeding the 60-plus pound requirement by the County of Los Angeles. Its modular design makes it easy to insert through a 24-inch diameter manhole and assemble inside the basin within minutes. The centerpiece comes in different lengths allowing it to be used with outlet pipe sizes up to 48 inches or greater. For catch basins with pipes exiting in the corner, the system can easily be adapted to an ‘L’ shape using a single corner piece and a single centerpiece.

Advantages • Captures 100% of trash and debris 5mm and

greater• 100% Stainless steel construction utilizing only

perforated metal construction

• Modular design allows it to adapt to pipe sizes ranging from 4-inches to 48-inches

• Modular design allows for design flexibility

Configurations Operation

Treated flows enter the basin and are passed through the Bio Clean CPS which retains all trash and debris down to 5 mms in size.

High flows are allowed to bypass over the top of the Bio Clean CPS during intense storm events.
