LA MOSTRA/THE EXHIBITION

In periodo di crisi diviene abituale i l concetto di fal l imento. Fal l ire risponde alle esigenze

di un'economia contratta. Dal fal l imento nascono le opportunità, spiegano i formatori che

ringal luzzano gli uditori dei corsi propedeutici per disoccupati, e di sicuro dai fal l imenti

nasce il loro stipendio. L'attenuazione di un concetto negativo diffuso è l 'indoratura della

pi l lola per garantire i l control lo del la fol l ia in un momento in cui la verità appare più

oscena del sol ito. Si fal l isce perché non era possibi le altrimenti. I l fal l imento è un motivo

per ripartire. I l fal l imento è uno stato mentale. I l fal l imento totale non esiste. Nell 'arte, i l

fal l imento è la conditio sine qua non del processo creativo di tanti artisti . Mi sento un

fal l ito, ma nella mia arte urlo che non lo sono, anzi, voi che la guardate avete i l dovere di

dirmi che in effetti ho proprio del le gran doti. Non mi è venuto come volevo, ma va bene

lo stesso, è arte, l 'arte di per sé è incontrol labi le, tutto è arte, guarda bell ino. Oppure, e

questo succede piuttosto spesso, al fal l imento si cerca di porre rimedio tramite l 'inganno:

l 'inganno di una mano di colore in più, di un'opera orrenda tagl iuzzata per diventare un

buon collage, di fori, col la e altro ancora che possano dare a ciò che abbiamo realizzato

più senso di un viaggio in pattumiera. Anzi, meglio: l 'inganno da toppa diventa un'opera

d'arte. Si trasforma in un nucleo complesso di significato. Diventa una trasmissione di

immaginazione. Covavo da tempo l'idea di curare una mostra in cui le opere selezionate

nascano da sbagli . Nel la fotografia, soprattutto quella analogica, qualche setting errato

nella macchina o qualche scazzo in camera oscura bastano per rovinare l 'immagine.

Foto bruciate, mosse, troppo scure, fiorite di macchie luminose, composizione insensata,

bestemmie al buio come se piovesse. I quattro fotografi che si sono messi in gioco hanno

fatto, coscientemente, un passo indietro nell 'ascesa del proprio ego, mostrando cosa c'è

dietro al le buone opere d'arte. Le opere presentate, nonostante siano state rese piacevoli

dagl i inganni e i rimaneggiamenti, partecipando alla mostra sono state sbandierate

ufficialmente come un clamoroso flop rispetto al l 'idea originale. Con questa mostra, in

pratica, ho voluto porre l 'accento non sul risultato, ma sul punto di partenza. I l fal l imento

può diventare veramente un opportunità, ma il rospo va ingoiato, senza sale né pane.

Fail again. Fail better.

When a crisis occurs, people get used to the concept of Failure. Failure is the answer

for a crashed economy. To fail means to have a new opportunity, as training coaches

say during the courses for unemployed people; for sure, fai lures are the reason of

their salaries. You can control the rage of people, if you diminish the negative aspects

of an unacceptable situation. They say we fail because there was no chance to

success. Our fai lure is the reason to start again. Failure is a state of mind. Total

fai lure is impossible. Speaking about art, fai lure is often the trigger of creativity - I 'm

an artist, I consider myself a good-for-nothing, but with my art I can shout out that I 'm

not so, and you, the recipients, should tel l me how skil lful I am. An again, this painting

didn't come out as I espected, but it's okay, it's an artwork, art is out of control, al l is

art, don't you see how this piece is cute? - Another way to manage failures is to fix

them using tricks: it's possible to hide errors with a brush stroke, and a shameful

artwork can be tear up to realize a great col lage. Everything can be useful to save an

artwork from the garbage bin. I t can happen, sometimes, that tricks make a great

work out of a weak one. Hiding mistakes can add meanings and beauty, leading to a

powerful transmission of imagination. I dreamed since longtime of curating an

exhibition featuring artworks born from artists' fai lures. Photographers, especial ly the

ones who work with analog cameras, know how it's easy to miss a good shot, and are

aware that a wrong setting of the camera or an error in the darkroom can

permanently damage their works. Photos can easily be burned, blurred, darkened,

covered with white spots, or simply have an unbalanced composition. The four young

photographers featured in this exhibition put apart their egos and show proudly their

best errors, making us know how can be complex (and unespected) the birth of an

artwork. Even if the selected photos have been pleasantly upcycled, we all know that

they are not what the photographers had in mind and that they are artistic fai lures.

With this exhibition I wanted to stress the creative process behind the artworks, and

not the artworks themselves. Failure can really be an opportunity, but we have to bite

the bullet firts. Fail again. Fail better.

GLI ARTISTI E LE OPEREARTISTS AND ARTWORKS

Niccolò è nato a Siena nel 1 987. Dopo aver terminato gl i studi universitari , ha deciso

di dedicarsi al reportage e a progetti di ricerca personali mediante la fotografia. Si sta

formando in fotografia a Milano. Vede la fotografia come uno spazio l ibero da vivere

nei suoi giorni, che sia privo di senso, non competitivo, esterno alle logiche di

interesse. Osserva attentamente le abitudini ordinarie, i paesaggi urbani in relazione

all ’ambiente, l ’ambiente in relazione alla gente.

Niccolò was born in Siena in 1 987. After the university, he dedicate himself to

reportages and personal photographic projects. He's attending a photography master

in Milan. He thinks at photography as a meaningless, non competitive, out of profit

intents and free space to be lived every day. He loves to observe the routines of

everyday life and the relationship among people and the urban or natural space they

live in.

Nata a Prato nel 1 989, si interessa alla fotografia già dagli ultimi anni del l iceo, ma

questa inizierà a prendere il sopravvento solo dopo la laurea. Intraprendendo gli studi

presso la Fondazione Studio Marangoni, triennale di fotografia, inizia ad interrogarsi

sul la fotografia e sui motivi per cui è intimamente mossa verso questo mezzo

narrativo. Scoprendo maestri come L.Ghirri e W.Eggleston inizia a capire cosa è per

sè la fotografia e la propria visione viene totalmente cambiata, indirizzata verso idee

inesplorate. I l suo attuale interesse si muove nel raccontare atmosfere, che siano

luoghi o persone. Quello che è importante è riuscire a sentire quel posto, quel

soggetto, farlo proprio e raccontare attraverso la fotografia quello che dentro di sé

viene riflesso. Ha partecipato ad alcuni concorsi fotografici, arrivando 5° classificata al

concorso nazionale “Luce Naturale” nel 201 0, ed ha esposto al Circuito Off del Lumia

Photolux Festival nel 201 4.

Born in Prato in 1 989, Martina discovers photography during last years of secondary

high school, but she wil l be ful ly involved with it only after her degree. She's now

attending a degree course in photography at Fondazione Studio Marangoni in

Florence, wondering about what photography means for her and why she feels so

attracted by this narrative medium. She found an answer by discovering the work of

L.Ghirri and W.Eggleston, developing a new, unespected research. Her photos tel l

about atmospheres, both through people, than places. For her, the most important

thing is to be deeply involved in that place and that person, so that she can

metabolize them and tel l her vision of these subjects through photography. She

participated to several I tal ian photocontests, gaining a 5th place at 201 0 edition of

“Luce Naturale”. Her works have been selected to be featured at 201 4 Lumia

Photolux Festival - Circuito Off.

Gabriele Rosati, in arte Twisty, nasce a Pescia (FI) i l 06 Ottobre 1 996. Attualmente

vive a Massarel la, che dista sette chilometri da Fucecchio (FI). La passione per l ’arte,

specificatamente per la pittura, nasce all ’ inizio del la seconda media grazie ad un

professore a sua detta genialeO Inizia con l '”innamoramento” per Keith Haring,

successivamente per Jackson Pollock fino ad arrivare a Amedeo Modigl iani ed Egon

Schiele, passando per Jean-Michel Basquiat e Pablo Picasso. Attualmente frequenta

i l Liceo Artistico Virgi l io di Empoli , con indirizzo Arti Figurative. Nel Dicembre 2011

fonda, insieme ad altri sei coetanei i l VirginArt, un gruppo sperimentale di giovani

ragazzi tra i 1 6-1 8 anni che hanno in comune la passione per l ’Arte e tentano di

evadere da questo mondo attraverso essa. All ’ interno di questa associazione vi sono

presenti 3 fotografi e 4 pittori (tra cui Gabriele). Inoltre ha avuto delle esperienze di

Bodypainting con l’artista Francesco Cinel l i ed alcune esperienze di Scenografia con

la regista Firenza Guidi. Ha esposto in numerose mostre collettive a l ivel lo nazionale

ed è stato protagonista di performances artistiche in I tal ia e al l 'estero, tra cui un Live

Painting in Pop Up Store-Isetan, Fiera della Moda “I taly Week” a Tokyo.

Gabriele Rosati, AKA Twisty, was born in Pescia, Florence, on 1 996. He lives in

Massarel la, near Fucecchio (Florence). His passion for art, especial ly for painting,

grows while he's attending the junior high school, thanks to a professor who he

admired and considered a genius. He fal l in love with Keith Haring, then with Jackson

Pollock, Amedeo Modigl iani, Egon Schiele, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pablo Picasso.

He's now attending the Art school of Empoli , visual arts course. In december 2011

founds, together with other friends, the experimental artistic group VirginArt,

composed by a group of teenagers which are l inked by the love for arts and that use

art to escape from reality. This group is composed by 3 photographers and 4 painters.

He was protagonist of a bodypainting performance with the artist Francesco Cinel l i

and cooperated to some scenic designs with director Firenza Guidi. His works have

been exhibited in several I tal ian group shows and he was protagonist of manu artistic

performances in I taly and abroad, such as the Live Painting in Pop Up Store-Isetan,

Fiera della Moda “I taly Week” a Tokyo.

Pugliese, è nata a Taranto nel 1 989. Dal 2007 vive a Firenze. Dopo il diploma, decide

di frequentare il DAMS presso la Facoltà di Arte di Firenze, dove si laurea nel 2011 .

Nel 201 4 si è laureata in fotografia presso la Fondazione Studio Marangoni. Da quel

momento si occupa principalmente della sua grande passione: la fotografia. Ritrarre

le persone le permette di svi luppare una consapevolezza diversa del mondo e di ciò

che resta confinato negli angoli più reconditi del la città, mostrando gli aspetti del la

vita di ogni giorno che spesso rimangono latenti .

Paola was born in Taranto, I taly, on 1 989. She lives in Florence since 2007. After the

high school, she attended the DAMS at the University of Florence Art Department,

where she graduated in 2011 . She attended the photography school at Fondazione

Studio Marangoni and graduated in 201 4. Photography is her great passion. Through

her portraits, she aims to develop a different consciousness of the world and of what

is hidden on the most secret part of the town, showing some of the most latent aspect

of everyday life.
