PASCO’s DataStudio program is much more than a data collectprogram. Getting the data into the computer from the interfaceonly the first step. DataStudio has a variety of ways to display and it has powerful analysis tools to process the data.
ScienceWorkshop sensors are analog and thus are perfect for teach-ing about sensing elements. Since they output a voltage, studentscan use them in their own circuits. NI Elvis® adapters are available.
PASPORT sensors have digital outputs that allow multiplemeasurements per channel and reduced noise.
Make multiple types of measurements using a single sensorport on a PASPORT interface.
DataStudio has the ability to find the peaks of this damped oscillation. An exponentia
performed on the peak points to determine the damping coefficient.

Construction is easy: I-beams
fit into the connectors and are
secured with thumb screws.
Thumb screws are also slotted so
a screw driver can be used.
Use the Truss Set to build a variety ofstructures to investigate the principlesof trusses. The I-Beams fasten securelytogether using the provided connectors andthumb screws. Load cells can be inserted intothe design by replacing one beam at a time. Thereis no need to completely disassemble the truss to add
instrumentation. Students can load the truss by hanging weights.
Students can construct a roof truss to study how theroof is supported in buildings.

be performed with a Motion
Sensor and a Force Sensor.
The graph shows the force
applied to the end of the
cantilever beam versus
the displacement for both
directions of bending.
The direction of bending makes all the difference: Although she appears to be
much stronger, the beam is four times stiffer in the direction he is bending it.

Tension ProtractorME-6855
A 50 gram mass hangsvertically from the TensionProtractor: The tension reads0.5 N as expected and theouter degree scale is dialedto align the 90° mark with thestring. This compensates forbent rods or tables that arenot level.
The tension in theleft string is greater
than in the right stringbecause the anglesare different.
A Measure Tension and Angle with one device
A Large scale for viewing demonstrations
A Zero-adjust for torsion spring scale
A Built-in Rod Clamp
The Tension Protractor is a spring scale and a protractorintegrated into one device. Perfect for static equilibrium experi-ments, the rotary dial indicates the tension in the string and theangle is read where the string passes over the degree scaleon the outer ring. Since the Tension Protractor is supportedon a rod, it has an advantage over other spring scales whichtend to weight down the string, changing the angle.
The string is wrapped once around a small pulley which isspring-loaded. The torsion spring scale is carefully calibratedat the factory and can be zeroed by the user using the thumbscrew on the back. The red arrow which indicates tension iscolor-coded to match the Newton scale.
Even if the mounting rod is not plumb, the Tension
Protractor’s degree scale can be adjusted to read 90 degreesvertically by rotating the outer ring until the string with ahanging mass aligns with 90 degrees.

The Pulley Demonstration System is designed to complementdemonstrations of simple machines. From the wheels on abicycle to the gears in a car, the Pulley Demonstration Systemhelps explain how things work. Students learn that an increasein the number of pulleys decreases the force required to lift anobject but increases the amount of string that must be pulled.Yet the amount of work done is independent of the number ofpulleys.

The oscillating spring and cart system shown here is
forced to vibrate by the Mechanical Oscillator/Driver.
The frequency of the driver is controlled by the DC
Power Supply, and the resulting motion
is measured by the Rotary Motion
Sensor and Track String Adapter. As
the frequency is ramped through
resonance, both the amplitude andfrequency of the car’s oscillation
are recorded. The Magnetic
Damping Accessory provides a
friction that is proportional to
velocity, and can be adjusted
by changing the distance
from the aluminum track.
The velocity amplitude isplotted as a function of drivingfrequency. The four resonance
curves show the effect ofvarying the strength of the
magnetic damping.

Motion Sensor
measures position and
velocity of cart.
The cart is displaced from equilibrium andthen released from rest. The green line showsa system that is under-damped, with themagnets far from the track. The cart is over- damped (blue line) when the magnets arevery close to the track, and it takes over fourseconds for the cart to reach its equilibriumposition. When the cart is critically damped(red line) it reaches its equilibrium position inthe minimum amount of time, which for thissystem is just over two seconds.
Magnetic Damping
The steel bracket of the MagneticDamping Accessory slides up and down
to adjust the amount of damping.
Dynamics Systems with Magnetic Damping
The spring-and-car oscillation experiment shown here uses a Motion Sensorto measure the position and velocity of the cart. The Magnetic Damping
Accessory induces eddy currents in the aluminum track, causing friction
which is proportional to the velocity of the cart. Students can vary all of the
parameters, including the amount of damping, track angle, cart mass, and
spring constant.

side is clamped against a steam chamber, establishing a const
100°C temperature differential. The rate at which the ice is con
to water is a measure of the rate at which heat passes from th
through the test material and into the ice.
Temperature sensors near the end of each type of bar show thedifferent rates of conduction.
