    Save Weight - Save Money

    Weight equals cost.

    Techlok clamp connectors offer major

weight savings over standard ANSI flanges.

All offshore operators know about the need

to minimise platform topside weight to

    reduce overall installation costs. For

offshore applications Techlok is the only

    choice, with substantial weight savings

being realised even on smallerdevelopements - and these savings are

    applicable across all industries where

    weight is a consideration.

So wherever weight is a factor, Techlok

clamp connectors are the only sensible

    solution.

    Save Time - Save Money

    Time equals cost.

Conventional flanges have eight or morebolt holes which have to be properly

aligned to make an effective seal.

Techlok clamps have only four bolt holes,

no alignment problems, and reduced bolt

    loads.

So not only can Techlok save up to one-

third of the time spent assembling

    conventional flange systems, they also

    dramatically reduce down-time - with

savings of up to 1m recorded.

    Save Space - Save Money

    Space equals cost.

    Techlok clamp connectors are significantly

    smaller than comparable conventional

    flanges.

    And unlike conventional flanges Techlok

clamp connectors are bolted radially, not

along the axis of the pipe.

With no bolt holes to align the Techlokconnector can be oriented in any position

around the axis of the pipe, avoiding

    potential clearance problems, it also

enables more components to be compacted

into the same space. Critical components

like valve hand wheels may be aligned

    more efficiently for optimum positioning

before fully tightening the clamp bolts.

    Save Leakages - Save Money

    Leakage equals cost.

It can also have an enormous

    environmental impact.

    External bending moments are always

present in any piping system, invariably

resulting in high stresses at the pipe joints.

Strain gauge and destructive tests have

    shown Techlok connectors can withstand

    considerable bending moments/forces and

    axial loading under pressure, without

leakage or bolt loosening. Data sheets are

available giving external load factors, Vector

    International can also supply specific

    customer requirements on request.

You cannot over overload or crush a

Techlok Sealring. Once initial make-up is

achieved, the seal is self energised with

    essentially elastic deformations, and is

made even more effective by internal

pressure - so much so that the Sealring can

normally exceed the burst pressure of the

    connected pipe.

So Techlok clamp connectors can withstand

severe bending without leakage or the need

    for periodic retightening, thereby reducing

    maintenance costs and protecting the

    environment.

The design of conventional flanges hasremained unchanged for more than fifty

years. Around thirty years ago the clamp

connector was developed as a high-pressure,

    low-weight alternative to flanges. Its

    continued success has encouraged

increasing application in a widespread range

of industries where its performance and

    economic and environmental advantages are

    increasingly being realised.

    Techlok high pressure clamp connectors

    incorporate a proven metal-to-metal sealing

concept which combines the strength and

integrity of a welded joint with the versatilityof a mechanical joint.

The product range has been categorised into

three separate duty ratings - standard, light

and heavy - reflecting the size designations

developed over the years in a logical range

for ease of use, and to provide the optimum

    solution for all pressure requirements.

Clamp Connectors - The Obvious Choice

In twenty-five years of reliable service the clampconnector has become a must for onshore, offshore

    and subsea pipeline installations.

    Hubs

The two hubs are manufactured from the same generic

material as the piping system. They are then

welded to the pipe section or machined

integrally onto associated equipment such as

valves. A critical feature of the hub is

    the conical seat which creates

    the interference with the

sealing lips to effect the seal.

    Butt weld hubs

    are supplied

    with standard

    ANSI B16.25

    weld profiles.

    Blind hubs, are also

    available as a means of

    blanking off a pipe section,

    or for pressure vessel

    closures.

    5

    How it Works

    Bolts

Techlok clamp connectors utilise standard grade bolts and nuts in a variety of coatings to suit every

application. Each connector only requires four bolts which include a 100% redundancy factor.

All bolts are provided with spherical-faced nuts to eliminate bending stresses in the bolts

    during assembly.

    The Techlok concept, unlike conventional

flange design, does not rely on the bolting

to maintain seal integrity during service.

The applied loads are transmitted to the

clamp segments via almost full 360

contact with the hubs, the transverse

bolting being virtually isolated from the

operating loads giving a strong, reliable

    yet compact connection.

SealringThe sealring is the heart ofthe Techlok system and

    provides many advantages over

    conventional gaskets such as:

    Minimal gasket forces and seal

    diameter, enabling the load capacity

of the components to be maximised.

    Reliable and proven pressure-

    energised bore seal concept.making

    the Techlok connector compact and

up to 75 per cent lighter than

    comparably rated flanges.

Gas tight metal to metal seal.

The ring consists of a central rib section

and two seal lips which are tapered to

match the conical seat profile of the

hubs. It is these lips which provide the

    pressure-energised seal, as shown in

    (page 4), with deformation remaining

    essentially elastic throughout, and

    making the sealring reusable.

    Clamps

The two clamp segments make nearly 360 contact round the hub flange. The seal is

made when the bolts are tightened, drawing the two clamp halves together, and

clamping the hubs against the seal ring. The clamp bolt holes are also supplied with

spherical seats to accept the spherically faced nuts.

The rib acts as a positive

    stop during makeup,

    prevents the lips from being

    crushed by overtightening,

    and transfers compressive and

bending loads from one hub to

    the other.

Coating the sealring with a lubricant such as

PTFE or MoS2 prevents the surfaces galling during

    makeup and enhances its reusability.

The ring is manufactured from high strength steel

compatible with the hub materials. Typically precipitation

hardening stainless steels, such as grades 630 or 660, or Alloy

718, are specified for corrosion resistant applications, while low

alloy steels are used for carbon steel pipelines.

The Techlok clamp connector is a compact mechanical joint consisting of four basic elements: hubs,

seal ring, clamps and bolting. During assembly the hubs are drawn together under the twin wedge

action of the clamp segments to provide the initial self-energising seal.

    6

    Unlike conventional flanges, Techlok

connectors do not rely directly on

bolting to maintain seal integrity. Loads

are transmitted to the clamp segments

via almost full 360 contact with the

hubs, the bolting being virtually isolated

    from the operational loads. Each

connector requires only four bolts which

    includes a 100 percent safety/

    redundancy factor.

Techlok connectors also excel in high

    pressure applications, with working

pressures of 30,000 psi not unknown.

    The Benefits

    Techlok clamp connectors are high-

    performance products, competitively

priced to provide a superior alternative

to standard flanges for the Industrial

    and Offshore sectors.

    Their many advantages over

    conventional flanges make Techlok

    connectors obvious choice where time,

    cost and operating efficiency are

    paramount:

Up to 75% lighter and significantly

smaller than a comparable ANSI or

    API flanges.

    Close piping and hook-up

    arrangements with typically 25%

    smaller clamp diameter.

    Typically 40% shorter connection

    length.

    Easier fabrication and installation

with no bolt holes to align.

Only 4 bolts to tighten rather than

up to 24 on a conventional flange.

    The clamp can be rotated

completely round the hub for easy

    bolt orientation and tightening.

Ancillary components such asvalves and piping layouts can be

installed without regard to bolt hole

    alignment.

    Quicker and easier assembly and

    disassembly, minimising

    maintenance downtime.

Far lower bolt torque required -

typically 50 percent less than that

    for a ring joint flange.

    Sealing integrity is unaffected by

    over-tensioning bolts.

Short make and break times -

    several Techlok connectors can

    usually be assembled or

disassembled in the time it takes for

    a single flange connection.

It is not usually necessary to re-

    tighten bolts once in service.

In most cases only one clamp size

is required for each pipe size.

Unlike spiral-wound gaskets, reusable sealrings give greater

    flexibility for hydro testing and

    commissioning prior to service.

    Reduced inventory.

    Readily available machining details

    for interface with associated

    equipment such as valves and

    pumps.

The Techlok AdvantageFor many years the offshore, petrochemical and nuclear industries

have recognised the ability of clamp connectors to withstand

severe bending without leaking or the need for periodic re-

tightening of the bolts. These advantages are now available to the

    wider industrial market

Wherever flanges are used, a Techlok clamp connector provides a suitable alternative whatever the

    industry application. Typical applications include:

    Applications

    Petrochemical

    Power GenerationOffshore

    Aerospace

    Industrial Piping

    Oil and Gas Production

    Maintenance

    Properly assembled Techlok connectors

do not need any special maintenance.

    Always protect exposed hub seat

    surfaces with suitable corrosion resistant

coating when being stored or not in use.

When reassembling a connector the seal

ring should be checked for stand-off,

and the hub seats should be checked to

ensure that they are free from burrs and

    scratches which could cause the

    component to leak.

If burrs, scratches, rust or scale are

found they may be removed by lightly

polishing with a fine abrasive wet or

dry paper around the ring seat

    circumference. Ensure that the reworked

    area blends in uniformly.

Do not lap the hub seat with the seal

ring: both the ring and the seat will be

damaged, and it will not be possible to

    make an effective seal.

Do not tighten the connector while it is

subject to pressure or severe mechanical

    loads.

Clamps and seals must not be

    welded without checking with Vector

    International.

Substituting non Techlok parts will void

    all warranties. Components should be

    obtained only from Vector International

    or an authorised distributor.

    Fabrication

Techlok hubs can be fabricated to

    piping or other component equipment

    using established welding procedures.

    Particular attention should be paid

    during fabrication (welding) to

    minimise angular misalignment of the

    hub face.

Care must be taken to protect the hub

    seat from damage (for example

    scratching and weld spatter).

    When required, stress relieving of

carbon and low alloy steel hubs must

be carried out in compliance with

    applicable industry codes and

    requirements.

Assembly and Dis-Assembly ProcedureDIS-ASSEMBLYASSEMBLYDE-PRESSURISE THE LINE

Always check, never take it for granted that the l inehas been de-pressurised. Proceed with caution incase seepage has caused pressure to build up again.

SLACKEN NUTS BUT DO NOT REMOVE THENUTS FROM THE BOLTS - THEN SLACKENCLAMP SEGMENTS

Gradually run the nuts back along the bolts until justloose. If clamp segments remain bound onto hubs, then BOTH segments must be slackened by hitting theinner face of the clamp lugs with a suitable hammer.

    REPEAT SLACKENING PROCEDURE

Re-loosen nuts and re-slacken BOTH clamp segmentsuntil the maximum nut travel shown below is reached. This should release seal ring contact and any residualpressure will then be released through, with the joint.

ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF - WHAT IF ?What if, the clamp is still under pressure, am I or others in danger, and if so how? What if, there is still gas or fluid in the line. What if, the sling snaps. What if, the load swings in my direction. What if, the piping springs upon release. (Piping spring may also prevent free

rotation of clamps around the hubs).

CHECK CLAMPS ARE SLACK AND FREE TO

    ROTATE AND/OR ROCK ABOUT HUBS

Do not proceed until discharge ceases AND clamps areslack, free to rotate or rock. NOTE - If pressure is stillin the line, the sealring might remain seated, makingthe joint tight even though it is part dis-assembled.ONLY when clamps are free to move can dis-assemblybe completed. If the clamps are not free to moveDO NOT CONTINUE - contact your supervisor.

X = Nut travel at each end of bolt

2X = Total nut travel fromassembled position

    INSPECT COMPONENTS PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY

Hub and seal ring seating surfaces must be cleanand free from foreign matter. Damage to hubseats and seal lips is not acceptable, and should berectified before assembly.

    LUBRICATE

Usually seal rings are coated which acts aslubricant during make-up. If required light oil orMoS 2 spray can be used. Take care that no solidparticles are present in the lubricant.

    CHECK SEALRING STANDOFF

The sealring should rock slightly against hub face.Stand-off dimensions given below in inches.

    ASSEMBLE COMPONENTS

Install sealring into the hubs, and assemble clampsaround the hubs. Lubricant applied to thehub/clamp contact area will aid assembly. Thestudbolts should be fitted ensuring that sphericallyfaced nuts locate into spherical seats of the clamps.Lubrication of nut faces and bolt threads isrecommended.

    TIGHTEN BOLTS IN UNIFORM MANNER

Bolting should be tightened to keep spacing betweenclamp halves approximately equal. Clamp segmentsshould be shocked with suitable soft faced hammer

to aid assembly. Always re-tighten bolts aftershocking to the torque/preload values given below.

    ALIGN HUBS

Hubs should be aligned so that seal ring can beinstalled between hubs. DO NOT attempt to correctbadly mis-aligned piping by clamping force alone;piping pulling forces should only be released whenclamp is fully assembled.

    NS5801 and API spec Q.

    Vectors in-house inspection department

completes the quality aspect of our

product by inspecting 100 percent of

    manufactured parts.

    Techlok connectors, in addition to

    meeting the current Industry Standard

    for Interchangeability, can be supplied

    in accordance with various design

    codes/regulations including:

    ANSI/ASME

    API

    BS 5500

    UK Offshore Regulations

    Customers' special requirements

    Country Codes

Type Approval TestingThe Techlok range of connectors has

    External Loading

    Tension

The Techlok connector is capable of

withstanding higher tensile loads than a

conventional ANSI flange. Tensile loadscan cause conventional flange faces to

separate, providing a leak path across

the flange face. With the pressure

energised bore seal, this does not occur

and the Techlok connector will remain

    leak tight.

    Techlok

    API Fire Testing

The need for correct analysis of

    product performance is a

    prerequisite when specifying pipe

    connectors.

    Having successfully completed

strain gauge testing under full load

conditions and fire testing to API

    6FB parts 1 and 2, the Techlok

    range of clamp connectors suits

    most applications.

    Independent testing and

    witnessing, resulting in Bureau

    Veritas, Type Approval coupled with

    extensive Finite Element Analysis

    Bending

    Techlok connectors are designed to

    withstand severe bending loads without

leaking or loosening.Independent tests evaluating Techlok

clamp connectors have shown that even

    under severe pressure and bending

conditions, the connector does not leak

    and the bolting remains tight.

    Increasing the bending movement to

ultimate failure of the pipe has not

    resulted in connector leakage.

    Techlok

    Compression

Because in most cases the bearing area

of the seal ring rib is larger than the

cross section of the adjoining pipe itbecomes impossible to over compress

    the Sealring within the Techlok

    connector. For normal piping

    applications, the compressive limits are

governed by other factors such as

piping flexibility analysis or anchor loads

and in practice the Techlok connector

will always out perform the applied

    compressive loading.

    Techlok

    Thermal Shock

    Techlok connectors have been applied

to both Cryogenic and high temperature

service which are subject to thermal

    transient conditions.

For very severe thermal shock (i.e.quenching), the connectors can be

    provided with thermal shrouds to

protect the Sealring lips from the full

    effects of the thermal shock.

    Techlok technical department should be

    consulted for recommendations in such

    instances.

during the fire test programme, affords

clients one of the most comprehensively

    tested clamp connector available.

    Dur-O-Seal

    Dur-O-Seal is an alternative sealing

mechanism to the standard metal-to-metal Techlok sealring.

It is used to advantage where seats are

badly corroded or damaged, or in sandy

    conditions on service/vessel closures/pig

    launchers where repeated make-breaks

    are required.

    Dur-O-Seal is fully interchangeable with

    all clamp connectors. It utilises

    standard, easily replaceable 'O' rings,

and eliminates the need for costly down

time for weld repair or on-site

    machining of damaged hubs.

Dur-O-Seal has a zero extrusion gap

which allows for high pressure capacity,

and there is no loss of connector

    performance.

This product is not intended for

    permanent installations where 'O' ring

seals are not to be used due to

    operating conditions.

The Techlok Product RangeTechlok connectors are highly versatile and can be used in many

diverse applications. In addition there are several other products

completing the Techlok range, some of which are illustrated below.

    Mono-Bloc Bolt Tensioner

    This product combines two bolt

tensioning heads within a single block

    tensioner body, enabling two adjacent

bolts to be tensioned simultaneously or,

    using two Mono-Bloc tensioners, to

    tension all four bolts.

    The Mono-Bloc tensioner utilises

standard nuts, does not require costly

tensioner support washers, and allows forthe degree of misalignment which occurs

    with clamp sets during assembly.

It ensures uniform tension with a

minimum of passes (maximum three with

a single unit), requires one-side only

access, a minimum of hose connections,

and ensures a higher quality assembly.

Particularly suitable for larger clamp sizes

and sub-sea assembly, this product is

available either for hire or purchase, or

as part of a project scope of supply.

    Blind Seal Rings

Techlok blind seal rings are an effective

way of blanking off pipe runs and can

    normally take full line pressure.

They can also be supplied with the Duro-

seal option utilising 'O' ring elements.

    Note, Techlok Blind Sealrings are

    designed as an auxiliary pressure

isolation device and therefore should be

    used in conjunction with other

    equipment, ie valves.

    Orifice Connectors

The Techlok Orifice Connector is amatched hub pair with orifice seal ring

and clampset, and can be supplied for

    all pipe sizes and materials.

The two hubs are accurately drilled and

    are provided with suitable outlet

    connections for accurate flow

    measurement. Alternatively, special

    metering spools can be utilised,

employing a separate orifice plate and

integral pressure tappings - the spool is

simply connected into the pipe run using

    streamline bore Techlok connectors.

    Weld Overlay

    Vector International can furnish carbon

and low alloy steel hubs with corrosion

resistant weld overlay to prolong hub

life in corrosive environments such as

    water injection lines.

The weld overlay is applied in Alloy

625 to the critical seat area or, if

    needed, through the hub bore.

Weld overlayed hubs should be used in

    conjunction with suitable sealring

materials ie 630 SS or Alloy 718.

    The Techlok Weld-O-Hubs enables

    pipework branch connections to be

made with a single weld, and provides

full reinforcement for the pipe run

    integral with the Techlok hub.

    Weld-O-Hubs are available in all

materials to suit piping requirements, in

the standard size range 1 in to 6 in.

    Streamline Bore

The streamline bore seat profile is gives

a smooth bore throughout the connector

    joint, minimising flow turbulance and

    erosion. Alternatively, the Sealring can

be fully shrouded for severely erosive

    conditions.

It is available on all Techlok hubs, is

fully compatible with the standard range

of Techlok sealrings (refer to page 9),

    and is interchangeable with standard

    seat profiles.

    API Hubs
