Introduction

Introduction
The Unesco Programme for the tranlation of literary works, which givesrise to the 'Unesco Collection of Representative Works', has been a continuing activity of the Organizationsince 1948. Its purpose is to contributeto a broader international appreciationof the world's literary heritage by promoting the translation and publication-mainly in English or French-ofrepresentative works of literatures writtenin the less widely known languages. l
The selection of works for translationis made on the basis of recommendations submitted by the various Member States ofUnesco and in consultationwith an expert committee designatedby the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies. Theseexperts often advise Unesco on the recruitment of translators of outstandingquality. Such assistance is gratefullyacknowledged, as is the ready cooperation of translators, other scholarlyand technical advisers and the variouspublishing houses whose role has beenessential to the practical implementation of this programme.
The several series of the 'UnescoCollection ofRepresentative Works' incIude many genres. Alongside scholarly

editions ofbasic philosophical, religiousand historical texts are anthologies ofnational literatures edited and presented for the non-specialist, attractively produced versions of epics, sagas, legends, fables and romances, dramaand many examples ofthe more moderngenres, such as the novel and the shortstory, appealing to the general reader.Poetry is strongly represented since thisform, in which many traditionalliteratures are written, is one that publishers are sometimes hesitant to handlewithout some kind ofassistance or sponsorship.
In addition to the translations whichit commissions itself, Unesco--togetherwith its advisers and interested publishen-is also watchful for suitabletranslations which may be in existenceor in preparation in manuscript form orfor translations which have been previously published but are no longeravailable in print, so that these too maybe considered for publication or reprinting under Unesco sponsorship. Insome cases, sponsorship has been givento special editions of translated c1assics,usually designed for mass markets, inlanguages other than English or French. Thus, by special arrangement, fifteentranslations into German of Asian representative works were published by thefirm Philipp Reclam of Stuttgart intheir low-priced collection of worldclassics, the 'Reclam Universal Bibliothek'. Similarly several titles of orientalworks translated into Dutch appear in'De Oosterse Bibliotheek' published byMeulenhoff, Amsterdam, and a number ofWestern classics, including worksby Shakespeare, have been published inIndonesian by PustakaJaya ofJakarta.
The success ofsuch an undertaking inits various aspects depends of course ona number of facilitating factors, in addition to the funds allocated bienniallyfrom Unesco's Regular Budget and thecontinuing reinvestment of royaltiesreceived from translations aIready in

print. Foremost among these are thefinancial contributions of MemberStates particularly interested in the programme. For example, the LebaneseCommission for the Translation ofGreat Works carries out a programmeof translations from and into Arabiein close collaboration with Unesco.Several governments, including those ofBrazil, India, Italy, japan, Pakistan, and the Republic of Korea have contributed or are contributing to specialtrust funds to be used for the translationof the literature of their own countries. Finally, certain governments providespecial support for the translation ofspecific books. Thus, the Governmentof Sri Lanka has contributed to thepreparation of an anthology of classicalSinhalese literature.
The present catalogue lists nearlyeight hundred titles of translations published under the auspices of Unesco orby agreement between Unesco and cooperating organizations. AlI told theyrepresent more than sixtY differentliteratures and include translations fromover forty Oriental and sorne twentyEuropean languages and several fromthe languages ofAfrica and Oceania.
Among the authors are sorne whofrom national fame have since movedon to world recognition. The Greekpoet George Seferis, for example, wasintroduced to English-Ianguage readersin a Unesco-sponsored selection published in 1960, three years before he wasawarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The same prize was awarded in 1968 tothe japanese novelist Kawabata whosenovel Tukiguni (Snow Country) was oneof the first translations to appear,in 1956, in the Unesco 'Series of Contemporary Works' and has been reprinted thirty-two times since the firstedition. More recently, in 1977, just asan anthology ofthe works ofthe Spanishpoet Vicente Aleixandre was being published in the Unesco European Seriesin French, the news was announced

that he, too, had received the NobelPrize. Indeed, not only prize-winningworks but many others also, once translated into one of the world's 'international' languages, may attract theattention of further publishers abroadwho in turn have them translated intotheir national languages. So the initialact of sponsorship may be multipliedseveral times over and thus continue toextend the influence of a programmewhich was begun more than thirty yearsago and has been growing ever sinee.
Radio programmes based on selected works in the Unesco collection, and made available free of charge tonational broadcasting organizations, are produced by Unesco in its studiosin Paris. These programmes are listedin the present catalogue.
