[36575] Buckland, William. Geology and mineralogy, considered with reference to natural theology. London: William Pickering, 1837 second edition). Octavo, two volumes, 747 pp., 69 plates. Publisher’s cloth with printed labels, some foxing throughout but a sound set. $450 Published as part of the Bridgewater Treatises. The Earl of Bridgewater, a gentleman naturalist, commissioned

eight Bridgewater Treatises upon his deathbed to explore “the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation.” They first appeared during the years 1833 to 1840 and can be regarded as a forerunner of the intelligent design arguments put forward by creationist biologists. William Buckland (1784-1856) was that classic Victorian, a theologian but also a geologist and palaeontologist who gave the first full account of a fossil dinosaur and was a pioneer in the use of fossilised faeces, for which he coined the term coprolites, to reconstruct ancient ecosystems.

but not affecting image. Publisher’s blindstamped burgundy morocco grain cloth with handsome gilt finch design on upper board, top edge gilt, some light wear and a few spots throughout. $2,500

A handsome monograph on finches. The illustrations by Frohawk, particularly those of the Australian finches, are excellent. A second edition with chromolithographed plates and smaller format was published in 1899.

Many of the photographs are of young women dressed in Grecian-type robes tastefully disporting themselves among wattle trees or holding bunches of wattle.

Les Chandler (1888-1980) was a pioneering ornithologist who made the first bird bands in Australia and banded the first Mutton bird in 1912. He also campaigned for the establishment of the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park which became a reality in 1960.

Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888) was an English naturalist and populariser of natural science. He created and stocked the first public aquarium at the London Zoo in 1853 and published the first book on aquariums in 1854. Deeply religious and a staunch opponent of Darwinianism he was enshrined, probably unfairly, by his son Edmund Gosse’s book Father and son, first published 1907. The best edition, the first edition of 1854 does not have the coloured plates.

History has shown that Richard Meinertzhagen is the bad man of twentieth century ornithology- he committed ornithological fraud on a grand scale, completely lied about his military exploits and may have murdered his first wife. He was a man of considerable means and consequently all his books are handsome productions with Birds of Arabia probably the best.
