I am excited to be able to welcome you, as CIBSE President, to CIBSE’s flagship event. Build2Perform Live offers two days of interactive features and multiple in depth technical seminar streams, bringing built environment professionals and the wider supply chain together to help improve efficiency and
quality, and reduce operation costs through more effective building services.
Over 175 experts, speaking in 80 sessions, will be presenting over the course of the two days. Covering a wide range of disciplines, together they illustrate the diversity of specialisms and experience across our industry.
Legislation, Brexit and improving energy performance
Whilst the impact of the ongoing negotiations with the EU is still unclear, the recent publication of the UK Clean Growth Strategy commits government and the wider economy to a continuing pathway towards lower emissions, increasing the importance of engineering solutions to reduce energy demand and costs (How to reduce energy costs, 21 November, 14.00, Headline Theatre).
Brexit is also likely to affect employment, with some EU nationals choosing to move to work in mainland Europe, with implications for the UK labour force.
Our session ‘Overview of legislation & impact of Brexit on the legislative landscape in the UK’ (22 November, 10.15, Theatre D), will help provide some clarity around the plans to incorporate EU legislation around energy and buildings and emissions into UK law as we prepare to leave the EU.
As described in the Clean Growth Strategy, there is an increasing urgency with which we collectively need to address issues of climate change which is impacting our industry – a theme which will run through a large number of streams across the two days, and not least within ‘Improving building performance in UK’s existing buildings’ (21 November, 10.00, Theatre D) and ‘Energy Performance in Buildings’ (22 November 10.00, Theatre C).
Wellbeing, lighting, air quality, and green infrastructure
We have also seen a rise in profile of the need to address issues of air quality and air pollution. London saw the Mayor triggering a ‘high’ air pollution alert seven times in 13 months up to the end of September, and the London’s Emissions Surcharge (T-charge) launched in October is aimed at addressing the dangerous levels of air pollution. Our stream on Air Quality (22 November, 10.00, Theatre A) is all the more relevant in light of these.
The industry has also seen a relatively recent focus on Health and Wellbeing, an area covered both with respect to Lighting (21 November, 10.00, Headline Theatre) and Wellbeing (21 November 14.15, Theatre A). CIBSE is once again linking with UKCIP to launch the Green Infrastructure Design Challenge (21 November 13.00, Theatre D). The challenge aims to demonstrate how Green Infrastructure can contribute to improved health and wellbeing, improve energy efficiency, and make our cities better places to live.
The impact of digital engineering on building services engineers
The way we work is also evolving, with a major shift to digital. In recognition of this shift, and in the increasing percentage of engineering tasks being conducted in a purely digital environment, CIBSE recently launched the new Society of Digital Engineering. The new society will provide a community for professional recognition, training and career advancement for all engineers working digitally across building services. Streams focusing on Digital Engineering also feature on both days – BIM & Digital engineering: design (22 November, 14.00, Theatre D) and BIM & Digital engineering: make (21 November, 14.00, Theatre B) demonstrating just what a growing area this is. We hope you will also join us on Tuesday evening to launch CIBSE’s new digital hall of fame.
Together with this outstanding wealth of speakers, you’ll also find a wide range of companies across the floor, showcasing many of the product and service innovations that will enable our sector to rise to the challenges outlined here. These companies are the leading edge of our sector, so allow plenty of time to explore and engage with the businesses who are supporting this flagship event.
And finally, to celebrate: Building Services Engineers are one of the most important professions for the future health of the planet. As an industry we are also evolving and new challenges are breeding new innovations and creativity, which are reflected in the projects being worked on. We will be taking the opportunity to celebrate some of the industry’s achievements in the best projects, teams and products when we announce the shortlist for the 2018 Building Performance Awards.

It is easy to forget a lifetime of personal achievement. Experience is invaluable and should never be underestimated.Martin Trentham MCIBSE IEng, Interserve Engineering Services.
Having gained a BEng degree, I needed to demonstrate technical ability to Masters Level to gain CEng registration. There were two options open to me, either return to university full or part-time to complete a Masters or undertake a Technical Report. I decided to pursue the Technical Report Route.James Outram, MCIBSE CEng, Hoare Lea.

Electrical Distribution Control System Microgrids and the power of datamake energy digital
Transforming the flow of energy into analysable, manageable data – this is the function of Ekip Smart-Vision, the cloud computing platform that re-writes the rules for the energy management of low-voltage electrical systems. The internet of things is integrated into the devices, services and processes, allowing for better informed decision-making and easier supervision, even remotely. A simple, ready-to-use system that makes it possible to enhance radically, in combination with the new functions of Emax 2, the efficiency of latest-generation systems – microgrids – in terms of control, connectivity and ease of use.

Guardian Water TreatmentStand 344
Guardian Water Treatment will be exhibiting alongside cor-rosion monitoring experts, Hevasure. Guardian has recently become an exclusive partner of Hevasures, with the new relationship enhancing Guardian’s industry-leading service. The company can now offer customers unrivalled pre-com-missioning cleaning and ongoing water system maintenance, extending usable life and cutting the costs spent on chemi-cals, consultants and laboratory sampling.By monitoring the entire system using Hevasure’s 24/7 real-time system during pre-commissioning cleaning, the conditions liable to cause corrosion are caught before they become an issue, ensuring a water system starts its life in the best possible shape. Flushing and the overuse of chemicals is reduced using Hydrosphere’s smart flushing technology, cutting water wastage and improving sustainability.Beyond pre-commissioning cleaning, Hevasure provides continuous data on a range of parameters, including dissolved oxygen levels, in order to identify potential corrosive and/or other conditions which may lead to inefficiencies and system failure. This approach saves money long-term thanks to better and more informed maintenance regimes, less reliance on expensive laboratory sampling and a reduced risk of breakdown.Continuous monitoring data also means intensive sampling programmes aren’t required, reducing the need for external consultants – the customer has all the data they require to understand the condition of their water system, and the trends in water quality.Guardian is committed to delivering a whole-life service, to ensure a water system is working at its optimum from the outset and continues to do so for the longest possible time and in the most efficient and sustainable way.
