Cultural Contours of the Vedic and Post Vedic Age

SUSHMA

Present work entitled, Cultural Contours of the Vedic and Post Vedic Age. The Vedic period was the cradle of not only the Indian civilization but perhaps that of the entire world. There is a raging debate going on for more than a century and a half for putting this civilization in a specific time frame without arriving at a definite conclusion that may not defy the evidence at hand. The ultimate solution may come from the age old Indian concept of sanatana, the one that does not have a beginning or an end. At least it is applicable to the Vedic culture whose continuity has never been challenged to this day. Beyond any doubt the Vedic culture can boast of the longest surviving culture as it is a living culture. The present work by scholars, culture & philosophy readers besides the general readers.

Social Changes under British Crown(During the Period from 1858 to 1903)

SANJAY KUMAR MAHAPATRA (Ed.)

With the advent of British Regime to the land of Orissa, there started proselytizing and reforming activities by the Christian Missionaries which led to the significant change in woman's Social condition, emergence of a native intelligentsia, formation of socio-political associations, socio-religious reform movements and growth of a few urban centers and elimination of rigidity in the caste system. Even these changes were reflected on the contemporary official records, Oriya newspapers, Oriya literature and accounts of the Missionaries. Hence a humble approach has been made in this treatise to highlight the social changes under the British Crown during 1803-1903. This book will be of immense help to the scholars of Modern Indian History as it contains the historical background, development of the educational system, emergence of associations, spread of religious cults and the change of social structure which culminate in the rapid growth of modernization through the evolution of social consciousness.

Role of Satellite Sites for the Growth of Arikamedu (As Indo-Roman Trading Station)

ARUNRAJ T.

This book is about the study of importance of hinterland trade centers of famous roman site Arikamedu. Because in the past two decades many scholars have discussed much about long distance trade and the material culture of Roman sites in India including Arikamedu extensively, but they never given emphasis to the hinterland centers of any of these Indo-roman sites. During the height of the Roman trade, these smaller hinterland centers only provided the goods and services including agricultural products needed by the large and busy urban settlements like Arikamedu. The successful method (i.e. Identification of satellite settlements) used by author may useful for young researchers who wish to carry out similar studies with other major roman sites of India.

The Art of Mountain Temples(A Study of Temple Door-frames of Himachal Pradesh)

SANGRAM SINGH

Based on an in-situ study of the art and architecture of various temples in Himachal Pradesh, the present work is result of an in-depth research in art idioms of the temples in Himachal Pradesh up to the thirteenth century of the Common Era. The development and iconographic features of the temple door frames in Himachal have been compared with their counterparts in other parts of India and the relationship between the two has been discussed to highlight the extension of art idioms from one region to the other. Details of the exquisitely carved doorframes of the large niches in the rock-cut complex at Masrur and the wooden doorframes such as those of the Dakshineshvara Mahadev at Nirmand and Lakshna Devi at Brahmaur have been highlighted perhaps for the first time in this work, which provides a scholarly peep into the ancient art and architecture of this very important region.

Sastric Tradition in Indian Classical Dances

CHETNA JYOTISH VEOHAR

The book 'Sastric Tradition in Indian Classical Dances' focuses on textual tradition of performing arts (in the context of dance only). The rules pertaining to the fourfold Abhinaya in Natyasastra and other Sanskrta Laksana Granthas are correspondingly imperative and valid for all the classical dance forms even today. It is well known that our youngsters are much comfortable with English and for them Sanskrta appears to be an alien language, similar is the case with Rajabhasa Hindi. Keeping this in mind and for the benefit of non-Hindi speaking readers and researchers of India and abroad the present work is attempted in English. I hope it will serve the purpose and benefit the enthusiasts.

Mahisasurmardini in Art, Iconography & Cult Practices

DR. SANJAYA KUMAR MAHAPATRA

Saktism, the concept of Sakti, the source of all energies of the Universe plays a vital role in the socio-religious tradition of India since the dawn of human civilization. Mahisasuramardini, the Divine Mother is one of the manifestations of Sakti. She is the most impressive and formidable goddess of the Hindu pantheon. The cult of Mahisasuramardini is of considerable antiquity. Its genesis can be traced from the Vedic literature. The Mahabharat and the Puranas have provided varied but vivid accounts of the origin of the goddess. The author besides emphasizing on the descriptions of the deity as per the Puranic texts, has also discussed the emergence and representation of the goddess who has occupied a prominent place in the sculptural history of India through the ages.

Siva in Indian Art

D. KIRAN KRANTH CHOUDARY

Siva’s Iconography is of seminal importance in the history of Indian Art. The present work, Siva in Indian Art, for the first time, presents an exhaustive study of the impact of mythology on the iconography of Siva from the earliest to the 16th century C.E. The author compares the Saiva sculptures of Andhra with their counterparts belonging to the other schools of art like the Pallava, the Chalukya, the Chola, the Rashtrakuta, the Kalinga and others of South India which makes the work authoritative and exhaustive. Further, the study also throws fresh light on the iconographical evolution of different forms of Siva, besides their physiognomy. The forms of Siva are grouped as Nrityamurtis, Samyuktamurtis, Samharamurtis, Anugrahamurtis, Saumyamurtis & Pratyekamurtis. Being a serious research work this is very valuable for the history of Iconography of Siva and serves as a beacon for further research in this field. With over 100 illustrations, this is an essential book for anyone interested in Indian art.

Gleanings in Ancient Indian Numismatics

PRASHANT SRIVASTAVA

The field of ancient Indian numismatics is fraught with a number of problems and debates, like origin and antiquity of coinage in India; introduction of the die-striking mode of fabrication of coins; problems of attribution; identification of deities on coins; the significance of monograms on coins; certain coin denominations; etc. The author has presented, in a summarized manner, some of these vexing problems of ancient Indian numismatics, which appear to defy solution. The solutions proposed may be termed as probable, and not final and universally accepted ones.

Dictionary of Music Therapy (With an Introduction to Raga Therapy & Therapeutic Ragas)

T.V. SAIRAM

The psycho-acoustic role played by sound and music is well- known to mankind, right from the days of our ancestors who hunted animals and lived in caves for their existence. The archaeological findings of flutes and drums, made of bones and skins of those animals hunted stand as a mute witness in museums around the world. This idea caught fire soon, as people from various disciplines (music, musicology, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, rehabilitation, yoga and spiritualism) started pouring in to experiment at it. As a consequence, what we call ‘music therapy’ is no longer a 'close-your-eyes-and listen-to-music' subject, but is a full discipline incorporating tenets of arts and science, brain and heart, thoughts and feelings, expectations and experiences, illness and well-being and above all the past and the present. A Dictionary of Music Therapy, adorning your hand now, is the first of its kind in the world music therapy literature. It makes an attempt to tackle this multi-disciplinary subject to cater to the day-to-day needs of a scholar or a practitioner in music therapy from all parts and cultures of the world.

History, Archaeology & Culture of Himachal Pradesh

B. L. KAPOOR

Through this book the vast panorama of Himachal Pradesh's history, culture and archaeology have been given an exposure in small measures. The module of its presentation is to keep up the narration separately of its various political units which for time immemorial have been possessing independent identities. In several new publication a hotch-potch technique of amalgamating the history in various political periods is being on the pattern of general Indian History and that have produced more confusion rather than cohesion. The book is largely based on the materials scattered in the various works contained in the bibliography as well as on personal experiences, gathered from the locals during various visitations to the grass roots. There can be no two opinion if we uphold that Himachal Pradesh has an unique attraction amongst foreign and Indian scholars and this book unfolds the treasures of this hilly and mountainous state of our country to them as well to the lay readers.

Archaeological Survey of India: Reports (1862-1884)

ALEXANDER CUNNINGAM

Sir Alexander Cunningham's contribution in Indian History and Indian Archaeology is great and in fact he may be regarded as the father of Indian History and Archaeology. He was appointed as Director General of Archaeology in 1862. This year and the appointment of Sir Alexander Cunningham are the beginning points of systematic research in the field of Indian Archaeology. Under Cunningham the Archaeological research in India was founded and well-established during the period 1862-1884. Cunningham's extensive archaeological researches in all parts of India, facing many hazards and hindrances like old age, ill-health, the-then technical know-how employed for excavations and survey all were an Odyssey facing many odds. But Cunningham's personal hardships and he himself are long forgotten and have gone into pages of history. Now Cunningham is remembered for his Reports of Archaeological Survey of India. His monumental twenty-three Volumes of Reports and one Volume of Index published during the years 1862-1884 is not forgotten. In fact, they are the founding stones of Indian History and Archaeology. They are the base upon which many generations of Indian historical researches based their researches and future generations will continue to do so.

Since the publication of these Reports' one century and many years have passed. This time-period is long enough to make a work rare and forgotten. So it is good to see 'Old' Cunningham's work in a fresh reprint. His reports are still useful and relevant for Indian History and historical researches. Bound in attractive and uniform bindings these Reports would be a pride possession.

Archaeological Survey of India: Annual Report

MARSHAL SIR JOHN & OTHERS

Reprint for the first time, this annual report is divided into three main headings namely (1) Conservation of ancient monuments and remains (2) Exploration and research (3) Epigraphy. Thus the section on Conservation includes 'a brief summary of the maintenance work carried out to the various monuments in different regions of the country besides special informative and detailed articles on the repair and conservation of specific monuments. Likewise Exploration and Excavation part would deal in general the work executed in the various parts of the country. Apart from this specific articles on topics of interest are included. Epigraphy is also treated in a similar manner. The Annual Reports are profusely illustrated with drawings plans, elevations and sections besides photographs. Notes on administrative matters and performances are included.

The series beginning from 1902 runs through 1937 with unremitting regularity excepting for four years 1930 1934. All the reports are edited by the then serving Director General. However, the combined Report for 1930-34 was edited by Mr. Fabri, a specialist in Indology.

True to the high ideas and ideals set forth in the first issue the 'Annual' has been an indispensable tool for any researcher be a conservator, excavator or epigraphist or anyone interested in Indian culture. For the subjects covered, the articles published and evidence interpreted are so vast, varied, informative and educative that no scholar can afford to ignore. The illustrations-drawings and photographs-are unique in quality and quantity. They are not available any more. Two indices-one by Kaye (for 1902-16 issues) and the other by Hargreaves, covering up to 1929, bound together are a valuable additions.

The present reissue of these Annual Reports of the Archaeological Survey of India by Messrs Swati Publications, with the kind permission of the Government of India is really a boon to Indologists. Bound in attractive and uniform bindings these Reports would be a pride possession.

The Indian Antiquary (A Journal of Oriental Research 1872-1933)

BURGESS JAS & OTHERS (Eds.)

Reprinted for the first time, this is scholarly and exhaustive sixty-two volume work on manners and customs, arts, mythology, feasts, festivals and rites, antiquaries and history of India. Jas Burgess launched the Indian Antiquary in 1872. The scope as enunciated by its founder editor was, in his own words, "as wide as possible" incorporating Manners and Customs, Arts, Mythology, Feasts, Festivals and Rites, Antiquities and History of India. In short Indian Antiquary, as envisaged by the visionary Burgess was journal entirely devoted to the study of MAN-The Indian-in all the spheres of activities of his day to day life, past and present. In fact it covered the broad spectrum of subjects what we today study in archaeology, anthropology, ethnology, epigraphy, numismatics, linguistics etc. Thus Indian Antiquary formed a cultural bridge as it were between the East and West. Yet the articles and notices, these several volumes of Indian Antiquary carry are ever fresh and are of utmost importance to any researcher in Indology, History, Epigraphy, and Archaeology as an invaluable work of reference. It is also a sad state that most of the Indian Libraries do not possess a complete set and even where they are available, the volumes have become fragile and brittle and cannot be used without causing irreparable damage. It was to alleviate the distressed indologists and to aid them that the present venture has been taken to reprint all the volumes of Indian Antiquary in a phased manner. This work is a treasure for students and scholars, and those interested in knowing India in general and Indology, History, Epigraphy and Archaeology in particular; and for all university, college and other libraries of in India and abroad.
