EXHIBIT AND DESCRIPTION.
Nos. 1 AND 2.-FRANCE.-These interesting Remains &re found in posbpliocme beds, often at a
depth of mora than 100 feet; or in caves, together with the bones of extinct species of Elephants and Rhinoceroses inhabiting at that time the Central parts of Europe. They are simply chipped out of f i t s which ~ometimes had to be carried from considerable diu- tances.
Nos. 3 & 4.-E~~L~N~.-8imilar Remains are found in E n g b d in d o u s localities, of which Thetford, the Valley of the Ouse, Icklingham, and Hertfordshire are examples.
SPECIMENS, NO. 5.-Fron: Denmark, having the same character, are dso exhibited. They are found in so-called Kitchen-middens-hespa of refuse near pre-historic bttlements.
SPECIPENB, NO. 6.-Flint Arrow Heads, fiom Suffolk-shew the advancing skillof the artificers.
STONE CHISELS, AXES, h., NO. ?.-From Lake dwellings in Bwitzerland. Some of them pmtly polished. They are from the middle beds, illustrating the period immediately previous to the Bronze Era, in which the metallic tooh were made in close irnitatwn of the stone ones, of which No. 11 is a ample.
CELTS, NO. 8.-From Denmark (Sandstone). No. 9, from Ireland (Lydwn stone). No. 10, from Provence (Nephrite or Greenstone).-All ihs t ra te the most advanced state of the Stone period.
hTo 12.--SEw 2jEdLAN~.-Like Europe, New Zedand has &o had it9 Pre-Historic El'&, in which an extinct m e of Men hw hunted and slain the different species of lldoa (Dinomis) for food. A large encampment of these Moa hunters was discovered some t.ime ago at the m0ut.h of the Rakaia, together with their cooking places, or Moa ovens, and kitchen;mid- dens. The most primitive form of Knife is shewn in No. 12., being pieces of hard &Ad- stone broken off at one blow by another stone. The next form is shewn in No. 13-true. ones is very striking-with this great exception, that while the European are chipped on both sides of the edges ; the New Zealand ones are chipped onIy on one side, bemg left with the natural face on the other.

No. 17.-Stone'Bhivw and (3hip-from Moa Ovens in the interior of the Otago Province.
No. 18.-Ronghly chipped Stone Chisels, of which .many were found together in a c&&e in the B.qkaicc encampment. They are formed from a siIiceons deposit called " palla ; " the nearest locslitfi&ere this rock is f ~ d being Uswler's Downs, between the Forks of the liorthern and. aouthern Hinds. They are evidently of a more recent period.
Nos. 19,'20; & 21:-?tkoa1 STONE ~ E B K I E X ' W of more perfect forms, shewing that a new raae of Nen had appeared on the scene ; the implemente of the present race being made of Nephrite (Greenstone) or Chert. No. 19, A block of Greenstone before it is worked. No. 20, A piece shewing tbe ccnnmenoemont of cutting for an Adze or Axe, with refuse pieces lging round it. No. 21, Is the rude Maori Implement made of Flint, obtained at the West Coest in 1859, with which Greenstone waa worke 1.
No. 22, and the surrounding Specimens shewthe different forms of Adzes, h e y , and Chisels, which were ueed by the Maoriea at the time of the first arrival of ~uro&ns in New Zealand.
