The Vitruvian Man Experiment
“Beauty is produced by the pleasing appearance and good taste of the whole, and by the dimensions of all the parts being duly
proportioned to each other.”-Vitruvius
Background
O Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (born c. 80–70 BC, died after c. 15 BC)
O Vitruvius was an architect.
O He created several theories that described the dimensions of the human body.
The Vitruvian Man
In Leonardo da Vinci’s famous drawing, The
Vitruvian Man, he outlines correlations between the ideal human proportions
using a square to compare a man’s height to his
outstretched arms (Gorman, 2002)
Prediction #1
OFrom fingertip to fingertip, the span of a person’s arms is equal to his/her height.
HypothesisO IF the arm span and height of IPC
students are measured and the means compared, THEN the mean of the arm spans will be the same as the mean of the heights.
Growth Hormone
Growth in the human body is stimulated by growth hormone (Campbell and Reece, 2002), which may
equally affect the lengthening of bones in the legs, spine, shoulders, and
arms.
