Plot summary WHAT THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT
In order to unravel the layers of mental-‐physical disorders of the human mind, “Catatonia” reveals a pathos that is covered with a visual style set in 1960’s, yet contemporary timelessness that ought to evoke an original play in the horror-‐psychological thriller genre.
The story begins with a street preacher screaming in the downtown streets of El Paso. He almost prophesies certain things to come within our story. Overwhelmed by the intensity of his preaching the man goes into cardiac arrest.
At this point is where we are introduced to Nurse Samantha and Doctor Murphy, who both tend to him at the hospital trying to safe his life. The Preacher dies, and Samantha’s inexperience with death becomes evident.
Later that day, Dr. Murphy now tends to an older lady, that based on initial introduction, appears to be one of his patients. She is catatonic, and is always in her wheelchair. Judd, the woman's son, asks Dr. Murphy for some one to take care of his mother during a business trip over the weekend. Despite the lack of experience Samantha ends up being the only choice.
Dr. Murphy and Samantha meet at the woman’s house along with Judd, where she is provided with all the directions for taking care of this woman, as Samantha innocently and intently listens.
Dr. Murphy and Judd leave. Then Samantha is left alone with her patient for the Rirst time.
The home is old. The hard wood Rloors crack as if though someone is walking
around. The woman's piercing, empty stair, though expected as a result of Catatonia, is still very frightening.
Later that evening, Samantha comes out of the kitchen; the woman is next to the door, gaping out. It is impossible for that to occur.
Sam tries to talk to the woman, doubting that she’s at all catatonic.
The series of events that begin to occur are almost paranormal. Objects move by themselves, shadow like Rigures appear to move between the walls, and someone or something is writing messages in a journal.
She calls Dr. Murphy, who promptly soothes her fear with scientiRic explanations, and she is brieRly comforted.
Only that comfort quickly dissipates,as the ivy machine falls to the ground, Samantha picks it up and almost feels a hand grab her shoulder. She’s overwhelmed with the paranormal activity; but she is unable to leave the woman by herself regardless of her fear.
Samantha begins to question herself:
Is the woman possessed? Is the house haunted?
Or are their darker truths lurking underneath the catatonic woman’s telekinetic abilities…
MAIN CHARACTERS
Nurse Samantha: A fragile build, but strong, stoic, young 20 some year old woman, with a solid sense of ethics towards her career as a nurse. She is not naive, but formal and respectful. She’s almost like a female lead in a Hitchcock film-a quick wit, but still reserved
Doctor Murphy:A charismatic young doctor, approximately 35. He’s nimble on his feet and seems very proactive. He’s also rather sleazy.
Judd:A 30 year old Engineer, who’s ambition seeps out his pores. He’s neurotic. Not as far as to call him geeky, but he leans towards that characteristic.But he has an intense gaze. You know he’s a man, who’s brain is always looking for the edge.
Catatonic Woman/ Mary
She’s 65 and is intense. She reveals a broken compassion that is on the edge of insanity due to the psychotic odyssey she finds herself in.
