A dvent Advent is the liturgical season that pre-cedes Christmas and prepares us for “the com-ing of Christ into the world.” It may or may not

last a full four weeks. Next Sunday, December 24th, we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent during our ear-ly day liturgies. The priest still wears a violet vestment and we will light the fourth candle of our Advent wreath. The scriptural and musical themes will reflect that we are in hopeful expectation of the arrival of the Messiah. In the late afternoon, beginning with the 4:30 English Mass, we begin to celebrate the “Solemn Na-tivity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.” We invite you to join us for the hope that the 4th Sunday of Advent brings as well as for Christmas, when we rejoice in the fulfill-ment of that hope.

A dviento El Adviento es la estación litúrgica que precede la Navidad y nos prepara para la “venida de Cristo al mundo.” Pudiera o no du-

S aint of the Week Hildegard of Bingen (September 16, 1098 – September 17, 1179) Abbess, artist, author, composer, mystic, pharma-

cist, poet, preacher, theologian—where to begin in describ-ing this remarkable woman? Born into a noble family, she was instructed for ten years by the holy woman Blessed Jutta. When Hildegard was 18, she became a Benedictine nun at the Monastery of Saint Disibodenberg. Ordered by her confessor to write down the visions that she had received since the age of three, Hildegard took ten years to write her Scivias (Know the Ways). Her Book of the Merits of Life and Book of Divine Works followed. She wrote over 300 letters to people who sought her advice, wrote on medicine and physiology, and sought advice from contempora- ries such as Saint Bernard of Clair- vaux. Hildegard’s visions caused her to see humans as “living sparks” of God’s love, coming from God as day- light comes from the sun. Sin destroyed the original har-mony of creation; Christ’s redeeming death and resurrec-tion opened up new possibilities. Virtuous living reduces the estrangement from God and others that sin causes. Like all mystics, Hildegard saw the harmony of God’s creation and the place of women and men in that. Hildegard was no stranger to controversy. She confronted Emperor Frederick Barbarossa for supporting at least three antipopes. Hilde-gard challenged the Cathars, who rejected the Catholic Church claiming to follow a more pure Christianity. Be-tween 1152 and 1162, Hildegard often preached in the Rhineland. Her monastery was placed under interdict be-cause she had permitted the burial of a young man who had been excommunicated. She insisted that he had been rec-onciled with the Church and had received its sacraments before dying. In 2012, Hildegard was canonized and named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI.

This Sunday’s Gospel invites us to continue our reflection on the per-son and mission of John the Baptist. Today we depart from the Gospel of Mark and read a selection from the Gospel of John. The Gospel for to-day combines a brief passage from

the prologue to John’s Gospel with a report about John the Baptist. As in Mark’s Gospel, the Gospel of John contains no birth narrative. Instead, John’s Gospel begins with a theological reflection that has come to be called the “prologue.” This prologue places the story of Jesus in its cosmological frame-work. It speaks of Jesus’ existence with God since the beginning of time. In John’s Gospel, Jesus is presented as the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the culmination of the Word, the light that is coming into the world’s darkness. Following this prologue, John reports on the ministry of John the Baptist. We learn about the attention that John the Baptist received from the Jewish authorities. Mes-sengers from the Jewish priests, the Levites and the Pharisees question John about his identity and the meaning of the baptisms that he is performing. John’s Gospel uses these questions to establish the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist. John the Baptist is not the Messiah, nor is he Elijah or the Prophet. In John’s denials, we hear echoes of the kind of messianic expectations that were com-mon in first-century Palestine. The only affirmative response that John the Baptist gives is when he quotes the prophet Isaiah. Upon answering the next question, John announces that the savior they seek is already among them, but as yet unrecognized. John’s response highlights for us an important Ad-vent theme: Jesus has already come into the world as our savior. During Advent, we pray to be able to recognize Jesus’ presence in our midst. Advent also reminds us that Jesus will come again to fulfill the promise of salvation. We pray that we will continue to be watchful as we anticipate that great day. The third Sunday of Advent is also called Gaudete Sun-day. Gaudete, a Latin word which means “rejoice,” is a reminder that Advent is a season of joy because our salvation is already at hand. -Loyola Press
