o P e N i N g S e N t e N c e S if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. -1 John 1:8-9

c o N f e S S i o N o f S i N dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of almighty god our heavenly father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. and so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

The people kneel.

almighty and most merciful father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But thou, o lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, o God, who confess their faults. restore thou those who are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our lord. and grant, o most merciful father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. amen.

t h e d e c l a r at i o N o f f o r g i v e N e S S almighty god, the father of our lord Jesus christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, hath given power, and commandment, to his ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins. he pardoneth and absolveth all those who truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel.

wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus christ our lord. Amen.

remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for

every good work, 2to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show

perfect courtesy toward all people. 3for we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led

astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated

by others and hating one another. 4But when the goodness and loving kindness of god

our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but

according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus christ our Savior, 7so that being justi-

fied by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8The saying

is trustworthy, and i want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed

in god may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent

and profitable for people. 9But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and

quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10as for a person who stirs

up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. 12when i send

artemas or tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for i have decided

to spend the winter there. 13do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and apollos on their

way; see that they lack nothing. 14and let our people learn to devote themselves to good

works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful. 15all who are with me

send greetings to you. greet those who love us in the faith. grace be with you all. (3:1-15) reader: The word of the lord.People: Thanks be to God.

9 how shall a young man cleanse his way? * By keeping to your words.10 with my whole heart i seek you; * let me not stray from your commandments.11 i treasure your promise in my heart, * that I may not sin against you.12 Blessed are you, o lord; * instruct me in your statutes.13 with my lips will i recite * all the judgments of your mouth.14 i have taken greater delight in the way of your decrees * than in all manner of riches.15 i will meditate on your commandments * and give attention to your ways.16 my delight is in your statutes; * I will not forget your word.

among those who went up to worship at the feast were some greeks. 21So these came

to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip went and told andrew; andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23and Jesus

answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. 24truly, truly, i

say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it

dies, it bears much fruit. 25whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this

world will keep it for eternal life. 26if anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where i

am, there will my servant be also. if anyone serves me, the father will honor him. 27Now

is my soul troubled. and what shall i say? ‘father, save me from this hour’? But for this

purpose i have come to this hour. 28father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from

heaven: “i have glorified it, and i will glorify it again.” 29The crowd that stood there and

heard it said that it had thundered. others said, “an angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus

answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31Now is the judgment of this

world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32and i, when i am lifted up from the

earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33he said this to show by what kind of death he

was going to die. (12:20-33) reader: The word of the lord.People: Thanks be to God.

I believe in God, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our lord; who was conceived by the holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the father almighty. from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. amen.

almighty God, father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. and, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we may show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our lord, to whom, with thee and the holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. amen.

-Phineas Fletcher

The people sTand.

The poem A Litany (drop, drop, slow tears) was written by Phineas fletcher in 1633. it alludes to luke 7:38, the sinful woman bathing the feet of Jesus from her weeping. william walton (1902-1983) com-posed his musical setting of this text when he was only 14 years old and revised it later on in his life. The mood of the work is poignant and sincere, with the opening motive sung by the sopranos illustrating teardrops through the falling “sigh” figures in the music.
