MESSAGE FROM THE ARCHBISHOP
O ne holy night 2,000 years ago, the Son of
God became man. Born in a lowly stable,
the Mighty God and Prince of Peace came to
dwell among us. “I bring you good news of a great
joy for all the people; to you is born this day in
the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the
Lord” (Lk 2:10-11). This Christmas, the Angel’s
proclamation rings out once again, inviting each
of us to welcome our Saviour. Let us not hesitate
to allow him into our homes, parishes, schools,
workplaces, and communities!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
+ J. Michael Miller, CSB
Archbishop of Vancouver

IV Sunday in Advent December 24, 2017
MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
T he longest night of the year in the Northern hem-
isphere is the Winter Solstice on December 21.
After this date, the days get longer.
The early Christian Church was inspired to celebrate
the Solemnity of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ
around this time of the increase of light in peoples’
lives. This date was kept in all regions of the world.
This dynamic of experiencing the darkness of suffer-
ing and gloom leading to a new light of hope and vital-
ity is why the season of Advent is meant to prepare us
for the Christmas Solemnity.
As you marvel at the beauty of the lights at
Christmas time, may God bless you and your loved
ones with the light of faith in Jesus Christ.
May Jesus the Christ, the Messiah, break the bonds of
depression that oppress us and weary us.
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great
light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a
light has shone.” (Isaiah 9.1)
Sometimes parishioners ask us for a grace before
meals that can be used not only for Catholics but for
people of different faiths. Here is a suitable grace from
the Catholic bishops of Canada:
“May we be strong in virtue, firm in time of trou-
ble, and always ready to help others in time of
need. May we be blessed by God as we share this
food as we work and live together for the good of
all. Amen.”
