St. Peter and Why Rome! Why in Rome? Why on that soil of the Italian

peninsula rather than in Paris, Madrid or Antioch did Peter return to die a martyr? Peter, as the one to whom Jesus handed over the keys to the kingdom, comes to Rome in order to represent all of the world’s people. It is only in Rome that he can truly demonstrate the oneness, the very unity of the Church. It is there that he reveals his task of creating the very unity of the Catholic Church, the Church formed by Jews and Pagans, the Church of all peoples. And this is Peter’s mission, as well as that of his successors: To ensure that the Church is never identified with a single nation, a single culture, or a single state but is always the Church of all. To unite humanity over and above every boundary and, in the midst of the world’s divisions, makes God’s peace present. The current successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome, the one who presides in love and unity, Pope Francis, inspires the world. It is incredible to think of how God continues to care for His Church by giving her courageous and holy shepherds. In 2005 when the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI came onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to bless the crowds, the cameras caught the pensive expression on the face of Cardinal Francis George, the Archbishop of Chicago. Later, a reporter asked him what he was thinking about at that moment when he looked so pensive. The Cardinal replied: “I was gazing over towards the Circus Maximus, towards the Palatine Hill where the Roman Emperors once resided and reigned and looked down upon the persecution of Christians and I thought, ‘Where are their successors? Where is the successor of Caesar Augustus? Where is the successor of Marcus Aurelius? And finally, who cares?’ But if you want to see the successor of Peter, he is right there smiling and waving at the crowds.” ¡That is why Rome!

Msgr. Geno Sylva

Mons. Geno Sylva
