2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Here I Am, Lord!

Our Diocese is blessed that there has been an increase in the number of seminarians over the years. Let’s continue to pray for these men as they concentrate on their studies and reflect on how they will one day serve our parishes. They deserve all our support, and one way to show this is by giving to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The Appeal helps fund the significant financial costs associated with years of room, board, tuition and other related expenses. Your gift today helps prepare our seminarians for the future. For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2018appeal.org. May God bless you for your support!

Without Faith, We Can Never Know Who We Truly Are!

Mark 10: 46-52 A blind beggar named Bartimaeus saw a radiant light in the person of

Jesus Christ. The exchange between the two took place in the town of Jericho. It is believed that this blind beggar had heard the tramping of feet and had asked what was happening. When he heard it was Jesus, he began to shout aloud. Many tried to quiet him but, he was determined to meet Jesus and to experience the light. And the more they tried to silence him, the more agitated he became. Nobody was going to take away his chance to escape from the world of darkness which had imprisoned him his entire life. He was determined. Finally, Jesus heard the man and asked that the man be brought to him. No sooner had Bartimaeus heard the words of invitation did he threw off his cloak and jump to Jesus. Being blind, imagine how many times he must have fallen to have gotten to Jesus. But nothing was going to stop him from being face to face with the one who is the light of the world.

And it is in this encounter between Jesus and Bartimaeus that we come to see what faith truly is. In fact, this simple blind beggar defines it for us: It is in abandoning the cloak of oneself, the mystery of one’s life, into the mystery of light and love, the light and the love that is God. But to do this we must first acknowledge that our lives are each a mystery. Think of how many questions riddle us on a daily basis about our lives: Do I have a future? What illnesses will I have to face? Will I be able to go on after the loss of my true love? But we can never know the answers to such questions, and isn’t it better that we don’t. Yet these natural questions can haunt us and envelop us in darkness. Yet, they need not, for we need not to live in darkness! For, in the act of faith, by entrusting the mystery of one’s life into the light of Christ, one can see the mystery of one’s life more clearly. Not that one will know the answers to those and so many other questions, but that the light of Christ’s love will give one the peace of not having to know. Not that one can understand fully the mystery that he or she it, but that the light of Christ’s love will give one the peace of accepting who he or she is, regardless. Thus, one need not know what tomorrow will bring, for the light of Christ’s love will allow one the grace to live the present moment to the fullest and to entrust tomorrow to God’s embrace. Faith is this encounter with Christ that sheds heavenly light on the ever present shadows of our lives. Friends, without faith, we can never know who we truly are, for “only the faith we have received is the light which shines on our path” (Pope Benedict XVI).

Sin Fe, No Podemos Saber Quiénes Somos Realmente. Marcos 10: 46-52.

Msgr. Geno Sylva
