The Priesthood and the Audacity of God

On Saturday, here in our beautiful Cathedral, eight men were ordained to the Holy Priesthood. As the organ began to ring out to the heavens, one could feel the excitement of those to be ordained. As I was sitting there, I could not help but recall Pope Benedict XVI’s beautiful image of the “audacity of God” with respect to the priesthood: “This audacity of God who entrusts himself to human beings – who, conscious of our weaknesses, nonetheless considers men capable of acting and being present in his stead – this audacity of God is the true grandeur concealed in the word ‘priesthood.’” In this context, the word “audacity” expresses God’s boldness and courage in wanting to choose priests from among men to keep his Gospel alive, men who make it possible for human beings to have a true relationship with Him. How audacious! Not to be afraid to entrust such a decisive mission to men. However, God is aware that He is running a great risk, yet He does not draw back. In a priest, He infuses the courage to face a task, one which is extra-ordinary, in order to transform the life of another. And we can understand the beauty of this position by reflecting upon the signs that the priest discharges. At the moment the priest extends his hands over the head of a penitent who confesses, not only does he absolve in the name of God, but he transforms that person’s existence to such a point as to re-admit the penitent to a personal relationship with the Father and the community. And the same happens when the priest extends his hands over bread and wine and pronounces the same words Jesus used at the Last Supper: in a real way, every priest, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, transforms that bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This does not happen through others; it can occur only if the priest extends his hands and pronounces those words. Yes, the audacity of God!

But it is in reflecting on all of this that I keep coming back in my heart to your own “audacity”, each and everyone here. There are so many other places you could be. However, you are here today at St. John’s. You have no idea what your audacity, your very daring to believe in the beauty and the power of the Holy Priesthood, means to all of us priests. It is you, who give to each one of us the strength to accompany all of God’s people to the Body and Blood of Christ. It is you, who allow us to love as God has called us to love. For in the words of St. August: “It is a duty of love to feed the Lord’s flock.”

So today, we offer Him the work of our hands and our broken humanity, and He, through the ministry of the priest, transforms these things into perfect humanity and life-giving divinity. We stand awestruck and trembling before the grandeur and the love of God made possible only by His audacity and, I dare say, yours! Thank you for letting us priests live with our hands extended in grace.

Msgr. Geno Sylva Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day

In Prayerful Gratitude to Our Mothers, Living and Deceased “A life without challenges does not exist,” and this is but one reason a child needs a mother,

Pope Francis suggested. Mothers fulfill a vital role by helping children “look realistically at life’s problems,” without getting “lost in them.” A mother helps her children “to tackle” problems courageously and to become strong enough to overcome the problems they inevitably confront in life. In this role, a mother walks a fine line, searching for that perfect and “healthy balance” for a child. That means a mother “does not always take the child along the safe road, because in that way the child cannot develop, but neither does she leave the child only on the risky path, because that is dangerous.” For Pope Francis, a mom “knows how to balance things.” To all of our mothers, living and deceased, we thank you for giving us life and for helping us to find balance through this challenging world of ours! We love you and we offer our prayers for you today!
