The Saints

The only great tragedy is NOT to become a Saint It was at the end of the 19th century. Two young Parisians, one

a brilliant philosophy student named Jacque Maritain and the other a promising poet named Raissa Oumonsoff, found themselves in love. They were young Parisian intellectual elites. Yet, they both found themselves struck by the spiritual emptiness of the French intellectual life. And so they made a vow to commit suicide within a year should they not find some answer to the apparent meaninglessness of life. And then it happened. One day, when the young Maritain was reading a book by the French spiritual write Leon Bluo, he came upon one sentence that would change their lives forever: “The only real sadness, the only real failure, the only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint.” Bluo had recognized that while there are indeed many tragic moments in life, they are all trivial in comparison to the tragedy of not becoming a saint; to not becoming the person that Christ desires us to be. It would be this one insight that would change the trajectory of Maritain’s and Oumonsoff’s lives forever. They now had their answer. They knew where meaning came from: it came from striving each day to be a saint, to be who God desires them to be. With this new attitude, they realized that all they had been worrying about in life—earning degrees, writing academic works, gaining tenured positions—while all were important on a human level, on the spiritual level they were merely trivial matters. For if they did obtain everything they desired most in life, but had not become a saint along the way, such achievements would have been for naught, for they would be trivial in the eyes of God.

Now who is a saint? It is a person who has chosen to become a friend of Christ by allowing Him to live in them. And God never tires in creating new saints. In fact, this is His joy. This is the purpose of the Church: to produce more saints. For you see God is ever restless wanting to find new ways through which to manifest His perfection, His love, His very light in the world. And this is why He has created each and every one of us. We have been created to be saints. And as the Trappist Monk Thomas Merton had said, “For me to be a saint means to be myself.” Yet, we can only be our true selves by the help of God’s grace. What a great tragedy not to want to become a saint, for only saints live in heaven!
