FR. ANTONIO’S CORNER LEADERSHIP A Reflection for the Sixth

Sunday of Easter

.The more You give away, the more You

receive

We live in a culture of “instant gratification.” This is, without any doubt, one of the most visible characteristic features of modern society. Since the publication of the great work of Gerhard Schulze, “The Experience Society; The Sociology of Contemporary Civilization” (1992), studies have multiplied about the behavior of people in modern society. In these studies, the “Western person” is described as someone who seeks immediate gratification. He/she is not much concerned about the past and does not expect much about what the future may bring. Just in case there exist nothing beyond death, the Western person throws wholeheartedly into enjoying the present moment to the full. This seems to be for us “the most reasonable strategy.” Namely, to try to get the entire juice one can from the here and now without depriving oneself of anything. The aim is to squeeze the juice of every moment for our own personal advantage and satisfaction, because tomorrow maybe too late already. The reasons for such an attitude seem clear. We are subjected to the pressure of a dizzying pace. Everything changes constantly. What has full validity today is outdated tomorrow. One cannot stop at anything. Modern authors speak in all languages repeatedly the same words, “transitory,” “instabilidad,” “précarité,” “insecurity,” “incertezza,” “transitorio,” and so forth. Nothing seems safe and durable any longer. It is best to hold on to the

present and just enjoy life, just in case. Such an attitude begins already to configure the various areas of our life. There are no lasting commitments. People depend on the wishes and desires of the moment. What matters is that life is interesting and fun. Marriage is not any longer a commitment “until death do us part” but a contract “while our personal satisfactions are fulfilled.” This attitude to seek immediate satisfaction also affects the way we understand and live the religious world. People are interested in emotions, in what is exciting, and the novelty of things. People take rather what seems to be exotic, liturgical paraphernalia, return to Latin, and abandons that which looks too vulgar, simple and familiar, because it is already known or old, just because it is known forever. It is not difficult to grasp in all of this an attitude of stampede and evasion, a “lack of seriousness” as Soren Kierkegaard would say. Hence, the importance of listening to the call of Christ in today’s Gospel: “Abide in my love… If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love” (John 15: 9-10). In following Christ, what matters is not feelings, emotions or news, but knowing to “remain” faithful in love. Existence is not only fun and entertainment. It is also the responsibility of taking up our daily cross and follow Jesus to Golgotha. Only from there comes out true life.

ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL NEWS

PARISH & COMMUNITY: Returning Catholic? Are you considering giving your Catholic faith a second chance? In some cases life is what happens while your busy making plans and somewhere along the way your faith was misplaced. Or perhaps something happened earlier that soured you on the Church but your recognize that "throwing out the baby" (your Catholic faith) with the bath water (whatever went wrong)" isn't a smart move. Whatever it is, if you're considering giving your Catholic faith a second chance contact us at the Parish Office or email [email protected]. We're here to help you on your faith journey.

St. Joe’s 6th grade class recently experienced a one-of-a-kind learning experience at the University of Idaho's McCall Outdoor Science

School (MOSS) – Idaho’s only publicly operated K-12 outdoor school.

The kids studied and explored Ponderosa State Park and Payette Lake, blogging about their adventures each day. They hiked all over the park—many on snow shoes—to identify the trees and the different ecosystems found in the park Their field instructors were

University of Idaho graduate students who taught them all about the geology of McCall along with an understanding of how all ecosys-

tems are important.

At the end of the week, teams presented results of their week-long science experiments through videos starring the kids themselves.

Topics included: types of trees in the forest where lichen are commonly found, favored habitat of the woodpeckers found in Ponderosa Park, and how

the different types of water in the park (lake, marsh and tap) heated up over time. All the students created an egg drop, using materials to make an egg

capsule and parachute. They also worked on figuring out how individuals can help or harm the water shed. They even listened to a graduate discuss her

findings on habitats of bats—in poem form!

Mrs. Mary McClure, Mr. Ricardo Yanci and Mrs. Mary Seibert attended as faculty chaperones. And huge thanks to all the parents who attended the week as well. MOSS would not be possible without the parent volunteers who spend the week learning along with our students!

Featured parish ministry: Safety Committee

This week we pray in gratitude for those serving our parish through the ministry of Safety Committee. Lord bless those who are serving in this ministry with courage and perseverance and grant that many will be inspired by their example and faith. Help the men and women of our parish to hear your call to serve our community in a ministry to address their own needs and those of our parish who thirst for your presence.

“In, but not of” — if you’ve spent much time Christian circles, you’re probably familiar with this slogan. In the world, but not of the world. It captures a truth about Jesus’s followers. There’s a real sense in which we are “in” this world, but not “of” it. This week’s featured ministry acknowledges the challenges of being “in” with the reality of our earthly existence. This is a newer ministry here at the Cathedral, that aims to support a safe and secure environment for parishioners to worship and parish staff to serve. It consists of volunteers who are willing to step up and serve as a first responder in the event of an incident at a parish event. Some training is required to deal with specific situations, but it’s worthwhile has it helps to maintain a safe environment for all. If you’d be interested in being a part of this ministry, contact our Pastoral Associate Oralia Lorenzana at [email protected]

CHILDREN'S COLLECTION: In late March a $2,000.00

donation from St. John's Children's Collection was sent to

Aid to the Church in Need in support of its Nineveh Plains

Project--to aid a Christian Family with children return to

their home in Iraq. Recently a letter of acknowledgement

was received, in part it read, "Thank you for your generous

gift. . . . It is only through kind and generous people like you

that we are able to accomplish our mission of aiding the

persecuted Church and her faithful." (signed) Fr. Hugh

Barbour, Spiritual Director and Sarkis Boghjalian, Executive

Director. To learn more about Aid to the Church in Need

visit www.churchinneed.org.

Thanks to all the children whose Sunday donations in the

Children's Collection have made this gift possible.

IDAHO CATHOLIC APPEAL: Many thanks to the 397 St. John families who thus far have participated in the Idaho Catholic Appeal. As of April 27th, $223,029.00 has been given/pledged, thus completing the Cathedral’s Appeal goal of $175,160.00 (127.3%). If all pledges are paid the Cathedral’s share will be $30,353.00. All families of the Cathedral are requested to participate in the Idaho Catholic Appeal, each family according to their abilities. Appeal envelopes may be found at the doors of the Cathedral. Please place your contribution in the collection of any of the next several Sundays. Or you may give on-line at www.CatholicIdaho.org, select “Giving.” Many thanks to the Appeal Chairs for their collaboration: Kevin and Colleen Jones and Clemente and Mary Romiro! We are “One Faith, One Hope, One Family in God” and we participate in this annual collection to support the life and ministries of our Diocesan Church in Idaho.

Once again, we will honor Our Lady of Fatima with the same obedience as the three little shepherd

children did 101 years ago, beginning in May. In honor of the Fatima Centennial, 2017, we began a new

tradition, opening the six months of Fatima Rosary devotions with an International Rosary, in the

Cathedral. We will continue that tradition. This year, with Mothers' Day falling on Sunday the 13th of

May, our International Rosary will be held on Saturday evening, May 12th, at 7:00, the Vigil of the 13th.

Legion of Mary and our Clergy invite you to come and honor our Lady of

Fatima as she asked, with the same spirit and love as the three little

shepherds, one hundred and one years ago.

Portugal, May 13th, 1917. Lucia, ten years old, Jacinta, seven, Francisco

almost nine had driven their sheep to the Cova da Iria. There was a flash

of lightening and the children hurried down the slope. Within a few steps a

small holm-oak appeared, where they saw a lady all dressed in white."She was more brilliant than

the sun" Lucia said. "The beautiful lady held her hands in front of her heart with a Rosary of white

beads in her right hand. "Be not afraid, the Lady said. "Who are you? Where are you from? What do

you want of me?" Lucia asked. The lady answered, "I am from Heaven. I have come to ask you to

come here for six months in succession on the 13th day at the same hour. Later on I will tell you who

I am and what I want."
