Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception May 17, 2020

By Pamela Seal Diocese of Lake Charles

Many pastors throughout the Diocese of Lake Charles have been thinking “outside the church building” to allow as many parishioners as possible the opportunity to attend Mass — something many Catholics have longed for since March 17. It was noon that day when public liturgies ceased in the diocese because of the highly contagious COVID-19 virus.

Bishop Glen John Provost lifted the suspension of public Masses on May 1. However, given the strict state guide-lines of no more than 10 people for indoor gatherings, sev-eral priests are turning to prayer gardens, parking lots, city streets, and FM transmitters to welcome back their flock.

Faithful gathered along Bilbo Street in front of the Cathe-dral of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday, May 10, for an outdoor Mass. All weekend Masses were held outdoors to allow more people access to the liturgy in lieu of the state-ordered 10-person limit for indoor gatherings be-cause of the widespread COVID-19 pandemic. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception drew a com-bined attendance of more than 500 people for the five weekend Masses in front of the 150-year-old church May 9-10. The Very Rev. Rommel Tolentino, pastor, turned to the city of Lake Charles to request a portion of Bilbo Street be closed to accommodate the faithful. Several people even brought their own keepsake kneelers made by the Knights of Columbus from the old kneelers removed during the restoration of the Cathedral in 2019.

Father Tolentino addressed Saturday’s congrega-tion saying, “I wish you could see the view from where I am standing. It is awesome to see so many people at Mass. It makes me emotional.”

He reminded everyone that God has allowed the suffering of this pandemic to happen to us for his own reasons, and that our sufferings have redemptive value when we

bring them to the cross. “God is helping us become saints,” said Rev. Tolentino.

Altar servers at the Cathedral wear required face masks during the Sunday liturgy on May 10. An altar was set up just outside the doors of the church as the congregation gathered outside for Mass.

Father Rommel Tolentino elevated the Eucharist during the consecration as he celebrated Mass outdoors on the front steps of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on May 10. The article can be read in its entirety on the Diocese of Lake Charles webpage: lcdiocese.org

There is an insert in today’s bulletin with the latest di-rectives from the Diocese of Lake Charles devised in conjunction with the Presbyteral Council and board of supervising physicians. Our Cathedral will be open for Masses with no more than 150 people in attendance (25% capacity). The faithful remain dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Salus Populi Romani Protectress and Health of the Roman People

Prayer against the Coronavirus

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and cele-bration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every dan-ger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Given the circumstances, Bishop Provost is providing this prayer for the use of the faithful:

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You as if You are already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. (You may make this Act of Spiritual Communion any-time you need it and as often as you need it.)
