On January 13, 1982 an airliner crashed into the icy waters of the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. Seventy-nine people were aboard that aircraft, and of that number, only five survived. Each of those survivors had something in common: they owed their life to another passenger, a 46-year-old bank examiner named Arland D. Williams Jr.Workers on the rescue helicopter sent to the crash reported that Williams was one of only a half a dozen survivors clinging to twisted wreckage bobbing in the icy Potomac when they arrived. Life vests were dropped, then a flotation ball. Williams repeatedly spurned the safety line and passed it to one of the others floating in the bitterly cold water. One by one they were taken away to safety. By the time the helicopter crew could return for Williams, however, both he and the plane’s tail section had disappeared beneath the icy surface. He had been in the water for twenty-nine minutes with five opportunities to be saved, but each time he deferred to another. His body was later recovered. According to the coroner, Williams was the only passenger to die by drowning; the rest died on impact. He did not so much lose his life as gave it.Today we begin Holy Week. It is a time to reflect on how much we are loved by God. As we reflect on the simple words we read in the Passion today, we pause to consider how things could come to such a turn of events. The crowd acclaimed Jesus as the Messiah as they waved palm branches and spread their cloaks on the ground. Jesus received a hero’s welcome. A few days later he gathered with his closest friends to remember God’s great saving action in the ancient days of their nation as they celebrated the Passover meal. But, Jesus planned something greater – he gave them a powerful lesson as he washed their feet and challenged them to do the same for one another. And then he gave a new meaning to the bread and the wine of the Passover meal, as he declared it was now his Body and Blood.
The betrayal was quick – just a kiss in the dark. The interrogation was lengthy and the torture unspeakable, but in the end, Jesus hung on a cross, offering himself in our place, so that we would never doubt how much we are loved, and that we are forgiven. He did not lose his life, he gave it.Today we receive our palm branches and we wave them like the crowd as we proclaim that Jesus is our Savior. But, we cannot forget that the proof of love is found in the cross. St. Paul speaks powerful words in today’s second reading: “. . . he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Each time we look at the crucifix, we should remember how personal it is. Jesus was fully human, and so the fear and agony and excruciating pain were very real for him. Jesus was also fully divine. He did not simply offer himself for all human beings. He humbly embraced the cross and offered himself thinking of us personally – our sins, our betrayal of love, our indifference and missed opportunities to do good.We are so personally loved by Jesus, that he would have given himself over to that terrible death even if we were the only one to need forgiveness and salvation. Such love is hard to believe, and hard to accept. It is a gift. And because we are loved so much, we are not meant to just receive the gift and be happy. On Holy Thursday, the words of Jesus are repeated, as he challenged his disciples after washing their feet, “As I have done, so also you must do.” During this Holy Week, as we reflect on how much we are loved, we realize that we are not yet as holy as we are called to be. But, we do not give up. The love displayed on the cross offers us the power to love in the same way that we have been loved. We are called to give our life away in acts of love, just as Jesus did. And we know we can do it, because the cross reminds us always how completely we are loved.

El 13 de enero de 1982, un avión se estrelló en las heladas aguas del Río Potomac cerca de Washington, D.C., 79 personas se encontraban a bordo de la aeronave, y de ese número, sólo cinco sobrevivieron. Cada uno de esos supervivientes tenían algo en común: debían su vida a otro pasajero, un Señor 46-años, trabajador de un banco y su nombre era Arland D. Williams Jr.El helicóptero junto con los trabajadores de rescate fue enviados al lugar del choque e informaron que Williams fue uno de los supervivientes de la media docena. Su cuerpo estaba flotando en el gélido Potomac cuando ellos llegaron. Los chalecos salvavidas y el colchón de flotación fueron retirados, por Williams para dárselos a otros uno por uno y fueron llevados a un lugar seguro. Por el momento la tripulación del helicóptero pudo regresar así a donde estaba Williams, sin embargo, tanto él como la sección de cola del avión habían desaparecido de la superficie del hielo. Había estado en el agua durante 29 minutos con 5 oportunidades para ser salvado, pero cada vez la aplazaba una tras otra. Su cuerpo fue recuperado posteriormente. Hubo una traición rápida - Sólo un beso en la oscuridad, hubo un interrogatorio prolongado y una tortura indecible, y al final; Jesús colgado en la cruz, ofreciéndose a sí mismo en nuestro lugar, para que nunca pudiéramos dudar de cuánto somos amados, y perdonados. El no perdió su vida, sino que la dio.Hoy recibimos nuestras palmas y las ondeamos como la multitud que proclamaba a Jesús como su Salvador. No podemos olvidar que la verdadera prueba de amor se entrega en la cruz. San Pablo habla de poderosas palabras en la segunda lectura: ". . . Él se humilló a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz." Cada vez que miramos el crucifijo, recordamos cómo Jesús fue plenamente humano, tuvo miedo en la agonía y el dolor fue real para él. Jesús también entrego su divinidad. Él se ofreció para toda la humanidad. Con humildad nos abrazó en la cruz y se ofreció a sí mismo pensando en cada uno de nosotros; nuestros pecados, la traición del amor, la indiferencia y la pérdida de oportunidades para hacer el bien.Somos tan amados personalmente por Jesús, que le habría dado a sí mismo esa terrible muerte incluso como si fuera el único que necesitara perdón y salvación. Tal amor es difícil de creer, y difícil de aceptar. Es un regalo. Y porque nos amó tanto, nosotros no estamos pensando para recibir el regalo y ser felices El Jueves Santo, las palabras de Jesús se repiten, como él desafió a sus discípulos después de lavar sus pies, "Como yo lo he hecho, así también deben hacerlo". Durante esta Semana Santa, mientras reflexionamos sobre cuánto somos amados, nos damos cuenta de que todavía no somos tan sagrados como estamos llamados a ser. Pero, no podemos renunciar. El amor mostrado en la cruz nos ofrece la fuerza para amar de la misma manera que hemos sido amados. Estamos llamados a dar nuestra vida en actos de amor, como lo hizo Jesús. Y sabemos que podemos hacerlo, porque la cruz nos recuerda cuán completamente siempre somos amados.
