Cathedral’s FUSION MWD system makes it simple to incorporate a variety of MWD components and capabilities in a single, integrated system. Capable of withstanding today’s challenging drilling conditions, FUSION seamlessly provides real-time data required to support drilling operations. In addition, data gathered is stored and can be merged (post-drilling) with EDR data to create a foundation for more in-depth investigations into BHA design and drilling optimization.

FUSION EM Since its introduction, the FUSION EM (Electromagnetic) telemetry system has been achieving industry leading depth and performance achievements in basins across North America, including basins where conventional EM systems typically fail to detect signals. Ongoing advancements to our proprietary system have enabled EM deployment in all types of horizontal applications (normal, managed pressure and under-balanced) in a range of increasingly challenging conditions. The tool provides continuous inclination data which is used by our Directional Drillers as guidance between survey points. Recent developments to our EM system have resulted in significant improvements to both the reliability and performance of the tool:

Recent Developments:• Optimized gap sub design

• Redesign of transmitter head mounts

• Technologically advanced materials

• Ongoing developments towards shortening the total length of the tool

FUSION EMc2 (HIGH OUTPUT) FUSION EMc2 (Electromagnetic) combines a mud-driven downhole generator with our FUSION EM system, thereby enabling EM transmission to be continuously operated in a high power output that generates stronger signals. The result being that our signals can be detected from greater depths. This recently developed extension to our EM system creates a range of significant benefits to clients:

Recent Developments:• Downhole generator add-on to base FUSION EM system

that generates power from mud flow

• Industry leading design for LCM tolerance

• Upgraded custom oiling system

Benefit:• Enables EM system to continuously operate at high output

levels for as long as drilling conditions require without fear of depleting the batteries, losing power, and having to trip

• Provides a new level of power which enables EM detection in areas where EM signal is traditionally lost

• Resolves a major downfall of past industry attempts to develop high output EM systems – susceptibility to plugging off

• Reduces GHG (green house gas) in manufacturing and deployment of batteries

Benefit:• Better fluid flow dynamics

• Improves reliability in extreme vibration environments

• Enables longer runs in aggressive drilling fluids

• Reduces vibration due to tool harmonics

Recent Developments:• Robust internal (ratchet style) connectors

• Thread-together housing

• Industry leading internal suspension system/custom fin design

• State-of-the-art gamma packaging and suspension system

• Higher definition, tighter survey electronics in the directional sensor

• Enhanced surface decoding algorithm

At its heart, the FUSION™ MWD system is a central data processing unit (brain), housed within a common chassis (backbone), to which a range of sensors and telemetry options can be easily connected to provide

the data collection and transmission options clients are seeking for their specific drilling program.

Benefit:• More resistant to challenging downhole environments than

conventional connectors

• Easier assembly on rig floor/can also be pre-assembled

• Increased vibration dampening to support higher MTBF in harsher drilling conditions

• Accurate stable readings/increased survey accuracy

• Better noise filtering and detection

We have continued to ruggedize and evolve the “brain” and “backbone” of the FUSION MWD system to improve the reliability and performance of the overall platform - highlights of which would include:

As part of our effort to deliver Better Performance Every Day, numerous developments have been made to our telemetry systems and sensors to improve our ability to support longer, deeper drilling programs.

FUSION LP Cathedral’s FUSION LP (Linear Pulse) is a direct actuated positive pulse system. With no screens, pilot valve, or small orifices that are susceptible to plugging with debris, downhole mud conditions have minimal effect on tool performance. Additionally, the FUSION LP can be configured to run with a hydraulic assist to generate bigger pulses that are detectable in deeper wells. Recent commercialization of our next generation LP tool now provides clients with a unique retrievable design that creates significant benefits versus industry available linear pulse systems:

FUSION RP Cathedral’s FUSION RP (Rotary Pulse) is a positive pulse system that can be operated as a standalone transmission system, or in conjunction with FUSION EM in dual telemetry mode. Recent improvements to the power system of the rotary motor have greatly expanded the range of drilling environments in which FUSION RP delivers consistent, high performance:

FUSION DT FUSION DT (Dual Telemetry) can be configured by pairing electromagnetic and pulse systems to provide clients with the benefits of EM plus the ability to alternate to pulse telemetry if conditions inhibit EM transmission. With the underlying improvements recently made to the individual transmission systems, the redundancy of the DT system is ideal for clients with concerns about depth limitations or specific formation impedance challenges.

Benefit:• Significantly reduces the risk of packing-off versus traditional

poppet systems

• Maintains clear detection in deep difficult wells

• Reduces internal component wear/enables longer runs

• Reduces LIH (Lost in Hole) cost exposure

• Continues to increase temperature and depth capabilities

• Increases tool integrity and MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure)

Benefit:• Resolves the jamming tendency of rotary pulse systems in high

flow deep drilling environments

• Improves LCM (Lost Circulation Material) tolerance

• Enables pulse generation in longer, deeper wells

• Reduces internal component wear/enables longer runs

Recent Developments:• Higher torque rotary valve motor

• Upgraded compensation system

Recent Developments:• Direct actuated main shaft system (3 times more pull force

than other industry offerings)

• Advanced hydro assist add-on to generate bigger pulses

• Upgraded compensation system

• Retrievable (latest model)

• Components rated to an operating temperature of 175°C and up

• Custom designed seal stack and oil balance system

GATHERING THE DOWNHOLE DATA YOU REQUIREA number of sensors can be connected to the FUSION backbone to gather downhole data. The CPU of the FUSION system readily accepts the data streams and prepares them for transmission by whatever telemetry option(s) have been included downhole. Below are brief overviews of the sensors most commonly utilized on our drilling programs:

FUSION GRThe FUSION GR (Gamma Ray) sensor and housing has been completely redesigned in recent years to reduce the effects of shock and vibration that typically impact the scintillation crystal and photo-multiplier components. Of special note, we have developed a proprietary suspension system that dampens vibration effects and has greatly reduced sensor failures. Gamma Ray measurements are supplied in typical AAPI format.

THE HAWK™ – Drilling Environment SensorThe HAWK is a proprietary downhole measurement tool and software platform that continuously records a range of data including: (3-axis) vibration; shock; and, downhole RPM. MWD operators can down-link to the tool to change data packets. Clients can also define KPI thresholds (e.g. Hits-Over-Limit) and receive reports from the tools during drilling. Rig-available data can be used to make changes to drilling parameters to improve bit life, reduce the incidence of premature bit wear, and extend time-on-bottom. Post-run memory data can also be merged with EDR to support more in-depth investigations of downhole conditions (e.g. stick-slip), thereby supporting the determination of improvements in BHA design and drilling parameters.

FUSION PWDCathedral’s PWD (Pressure-While-Drilling) system is fully integrated into our EM MWD system. The system uses bore and annulus quartz sensors to measure downhole pressure. Data can be transmitted in real-time or streamed to any EDR system for later download and analysis. PWD is most commonly used in under-balanced drilling applications or when accurate ECD (Equivalent Circulating Density) measurements are critical.
