Dear Friends in Christ, In the year 385, the Arian Empress Justina demanded that the Roman Emperor Valentinian give over a Catho-lic church to her heretical sect. The Bishop of Milan, St Ambrose, refused to give the basilica over and barri-caded himself and his flock in the church from Palm Sunday until Easter. During that week, he composed the first hymns in order to teach his faithful orthodox doctrine and inoculate them against false teaching. He also had the people memorize the Psalms, and taught them to sing the Psalms and these hymns, alternating stan-zas on opposite sides of the church. Hymns were actually called ambrosiani at one point, in reference to their author, even though only 14 of these hymns have been preserved until today. Hymns eventually migrated to the Liturgy of the Hours, and were not a part of the Mass at all. After the Protestant Reformation, it was not uncommon in English and German speaking countries for people to sing hymns while the priest was at the altar celebrating Low Mass, reading the text in a quiet voice. Lutherans were known for their incredible hymnody, but most Protestants did not sing anything other than Psalms until the 19th century. The Anglican Communion had a veritable explosion of hymn writing in the 19th century, and many of our beloved hymns date from that period. But many of the hymns of the Divine Office com-posed in the Middle Ages found their way by means of paraphrase into Protestant worship, and even into Catholic worship. Now, actually, the Church does not prescribe any hymns at all for Mass. Instead, she prescribes for the En-trance and the Communion what are called proper antiphons, mostly Scriptural texts. Until the Ordinary Form Missal of 1970, there were also proper antiphons for the Offertory as well. At Prince of Peace, we continue to sing the proper antiphons at the Latin Mass, and we sing English versions of them at the 10a Mass during the choral year. At the Sung English Masses, we do sing hymns. They are chosen because of their liturgical appropriateness, but also, like St Ambrose, to teach sound doctrine. Much of what has been written for church music since the 1960s is musically, lyrically and theologically inferior. It fails to convey the truths of the faith or the dignified use of language. That is why we opt for hymns which do express the doctrine of the Church and are models of English or Latin usage. Music is not an optional add on to Mass: it is an integral part of the worship experience. We encourage you to use the music sheet and sing along at Mass with all of the responses and hymns. It’s part of full, conscious and active participation. And it is an incredible witness to others when they come to Prince of Peace and hear a congregation united in song and praise. It also gives contrary witness when people are zoned out, standing with their arms crossed and refusing to engage in the musical treasury of the Church or reading the bulletin or texting as the congregation sings the hymns! Let’s always do our best in this regard!

suggested title: Why Is
There Hell? What You Should
Know About It!
In this moving study on hell,
Dr. Scott Hahn shares what
scripture teaches about why
hell is necessary. What it is
like? Who goes there? How
can you stay out forever? He explains why Lucifer
refused to serve and then responds from a scriptural
perspective to the most seductive modern errors
about hell. Included are two bonus excerpts from Dr. Hahn's talk, The Healing Power of Confession.

The Five First Saturdays devotion – Our Lady of Fatima appeared to 3 children in 1917, and requested a particular devotion on 5 consecutive FIRST Satur-days. This devotion is one of the principal points of the Fatima message. It centers on the urgent need for mankind to offer reparation and expiate for the many injuries that the Immaculate Heart of Mary suf-fers from the hands of both impious and indifferent men. To help you fulfill this request made by Our Lady of Fatima, plan to attend our First Saturday Masses on September 1, October 6, November 3, December 1, January 5, February 2,March 2, April 6, and May 4. On the First Saturday during 5 Consecutive
Months, the Devotion consists of 1) Going to Confession, 2) Receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, 3) Saying five decades of the Ro-sary, and 4) Meditating for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary. All offered in REPARATION for the sins of blasphemy and ingratitude committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

If you are unable to receive Holy Communion for whatever reason, make a Spiritual Communion by reciting the following:
An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, as though You have al-ready come. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to
You; never permit me to be separated from You.

The parish would like to re-start the nursery for
the 10 a.m. Mass but we need your help! We are
looking for two adults to run the nursery at 10 a.m.
Diocesan policy says we MUST have two adults
every week for childcare during Mass. We do require
background checks and completion of the Safe Haven
course to fill these positions. We can offer volunteer
hours for the school OR a weekly compensation for
filling these positions. We can also discuss a monthly
rotation if enough interested parties come forward.
Please contact Maria Barontini to discuss further:
[email protected]. Once up
and running, childcare during 10 a.m. Mass will be for
children twelve months to three years of age.
Join us and the Center for Evangelical Catholicism for

you are in the church. Making a sign of reverence
when you pass the tabernacle, maintaining prayerful
silence before and after Mass, and silencing cell
phones are all practices we would benefit from fol-

also for the benefit of our fellow parishioners.
