The patented filter eliminates the particles and droplets commonly associated with ca- thodic arc deposition and allows deposition of mirror- smooth hard coatings. Coatings of chromium, chromium nitride, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, hard amorphous carbon, and numerous other materials can be used for hard tool coatings, machine cutting tools, and knife-edge surfaces.
