impossible without regularevaluations. In fact evaluation canbe liberating and upbuilding whenundertaken in love and commitment.

Encouragement is one of theprimary purposes for evaluation. The branches that are producingfruit are pruned to produce more.

II. The Call - Why teaching? Teachers are people who arewilling to respond generously toGod’s call to serve. We need to bewilling to respond, “Here I am Lord, send me” (Is. 6:5). We need to movefrom seeing service as something Ihave to do, to something I amprivileged to do. We need to beconvinced that we will grow as weserve. Service is not a reward forholiness, but a means to it.

When I was prayed with for thebaptism in the Spirit (36 years ago) Iwas asked, “What gifts do youwant?” I knew nothing aboutcharismatic gifts; but I rememberGod was pleased with Solomonwhen he asked for wisdom and I wasa teacher. I asked for the gifts ofwisdom and teaching. When Ireturned to my classroom the nextday and gave my witness of the newlife in the Spirit that I wasexperiencing, the youngsters said“Sister, something happened to you,you never talked like that before!” Irealized I was experiencing thecharismatic gift of teaching. Thegifts are not just for prayer meetings;they are for life and need to bebrought into our daily life.

At the same time we need to beconvinced that short teachings in ourprayer meetings and communitygatherings are a part of the way Godwants us to continue to bring peopleto know Jesus and to help themgrow in the Spirit.

Jesus wants his people to betaught. He sent out the apostles withthe threefold command to preach,to teach and to heal. “He sent themforth to proclaim the reign of God andto heal” (Lk. 9:2).

Teachers need to be willing to

preserve without seeing results orgetting credit for the effort. “Preachthe word, stay with this task whetherconvenient or inconvenient, constantly teaching without losingpatience” (2 Tim. 4:2).

III. The Work - How to teach? While teaching is a gift it is alsothe fruit of prayer, study anddiscipline. We need to find thebalance between not preparing, leaving it all up to God andoverpreparing so that the Spirit can’tget in.

When I give a teaching I prepareusually having three points (whichyou may have noticed); but as I stepup to the podium I imagine theanointing that is around it and I try tobe attentive to it, stepping into theanointing as the assembly prays forme and for themselves.

Learning to give a teaching is likelearning to cook. You need the rightingredients, the right seasoning, andthe right timing.

The right ingredients: Theingredients are the basic contents ofa teaching. They are the information, knowledge, truth, understanding, and insight that the person who isteaching aims to impart. They maycome from personal reflection on theteachings of Jesus in scripture, theteaching of the church, from thewritings of church fathers and thepopes, the truths passed on to us inthe traditions of the church andeveryday experience in the world orfrom the suggested content of aseminar outline.

The right seasoning: Theseare the stories and personalexperiences that explain or clarify, that is, add spice to the basicingredients. The truth needs to bepresented in a clear fashion thatpeople can take in and use. Itshouldn’t be too theoretical. It shouldbe practical. We should do it in sucha way that people can say, Ï knowwhat you mean; that is just the kindof thing that happens to me.” Whenwe reach people at the level they willbe able to receive and apply the

teaching we give them morethoroughly.

The right blend: A goodteaching blends inspiration withinformation. It needs to touch theheart as well as open the mind. Theteachers need to be touched in theirown spirit by the anointing of the HolySpirit if their words are to motivateand draw others toward the truththey are communicating. Inspirationdoes not equal emotion. It mayinvolve emotion, but it goes deeperthan emotions that are on thesurface of our lives. If inspirationonly appeals to the emotions it doesnot go deep enough.

The right timing: One of themost difficult things to achieve in agood teaching is the right timing. If itis too short the information will nothave enough clarification. If it is toolong it willl not keep the attention ofthe people. It helps to start with astory to get peoples attention and toend with questions that lead them tomake concrete applications of theinformation, and with prayer thatgives them time to respond to theinspiration.

Conclusion: Good teachers areChrist’s gift through the power of theSpirit. We should expect the Lord toprovide them. If our prayer group orcommunity does not have them weneed to ask the Lord to give them. Ifthey are not very good we shouldask him to improve them.

Called to holiness: John Paul IICalled to holiness: John Paul IICalled to holiness: John Paul IICalled to holiness: John Paul IICalled to holiness: John Paul II and lessons from the saints and lessons from the saints and lessons from the saints and lessons from the saints and lessons from the saints

Pope John Paul II spoke of 3rediscoveries that the Holy Spirit has ledthe Church to beginning with the SecondVatican Council which concluded in1965. One of these is the rediscovery ofthe “universal call to holiness.”

Before we go much further in ourexamination of the spiritual journey let’stake an initial look at what “holiness”really means. In the Book of Ephesianswe read: “God chose us in him beforethe world began, to be holy andblameless in his sight, to be full of love”(Eph. 1:4). To be holy is not primarily amatter of how many rosaries we say orhow much Christian activity we’reengaged in; it’s a matter of having ourheart transformed into a heart of love. Itis a matter of fulfi l l ing the greatcommandments that sum up the whole

law and theprophets; tolove God andour neighbor, wholeheartedly.Or as Teresaof Avila putsit, holinessis a matterof bringingour wills intounion withGod’s will.

Therese of Lisieux puts it verysimilarly; “Perfection consists in doinghis will, in being what he wills us tobe...who resists his grace in nothing...”Or as Therese put it towards the very endof her life: “I do not desire to die morethan to live; it is what he does that I love.”

John Paul II urges us toreconnect with the mystical tradition ofthe Church, embodied in a particular wayin the writings of certain saints, as animportant resource in helping us respondto the great call to holiness. “This greatmystical tradition...shows how prayercan progress, as a genuine dialogue oflove, to the point of rendering the personwholly possessed by the divine Beloved, vibrating at the Spirit’s touch, restingfilially within the Father’s heart.”

He makes clear that this depthof union isn’t just for a few unusual people

by Ralph Martin(“mystics”) but is a call that everyChristian receives from Christ himself.“This is the lived experience of Christ’spromise: ‘He who loves me will be lovedby my Father, and I will love him andmanifest myself to him’ (Jn. 14:21).”

Then John Paul summarizessome of the main wisdom taught by themystical tradition about the spiritualjourney, drawing in particular from thewritings of Teresa of Avila, John of theCross, Therese of Lisieux, and Catherineof Siena. He identifies four principles inthe writings of the saints that areessential to a proper understanding of thespiritual journey.

1. Union with God of this depth is totallyunattainable by our own efforts; it is agift that only God can give; we are totallydependent on his grace for progress inthe spiritual life. Yet we know also thatGod is eager to give this grace and bringus to deep union. Without him, we cando nothing but with him all things arepossible (Jn. 14:4-5; Lk. 18:27; Phil.4:13).

2. At the same time our effort isindispensable. Our effort is not sufficientto bring about such a union, but it isnecessary. The saints speak ofdisposing ourselves for union, by ourspiritual practices. If we really valuesomething we must be willing to focuson doing those things that will helpus reach the goal. And yet it remainsGod’s grace that enables us to livethe necessary “intense spiritualcommitment.” “You will seek the Lordyour God and you will find him, if yousearch after him with all your heart andwith all your soul” (Dt. 4:29).

3. Much has to change in us in order tomake us capable of deep union with God.The wounds of both original sin and ourpersonal sins are deep and need to behealed and transformed in a process thathas its necessarily painful moments. The pain of purification is called by Johnof the Cross the “dark nights.” It isimportant not to be surprised by thepainful moments of our transformationbut to know that they’re a necessary andblessed part of the whole process.“Through many tribulations we must enter

the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22).

4. And finally, we need to know that allthe effort and pain is worth it! Infinitelyworth it. The pain of the journey willappear in retrospect to have been light, compared to the weight of glory that wewere being prepared for (2 Cor. 4:16-18).

Deep union, (“spiritual marriage”) ispossible even in this life. Teresa of Avilatells us that there’s no reason thatsomeone who reaches a basic stabilityin living a Catholic life can’t proceed allthe way to “spiritual marriage” in this life, and bear the great fruit for the kingdomthat comes from such union.

The teachings of these saints show ushow to make this journey, and overcomethe obstacles we meet along the way.
