Pope Francis reminds us, “Poverty calls us to sow hope…”

Why Give Hope?Hope is a gift of love beyond measure for those in our region who are poor and in crisis with nowhere to turn for help. Catholic Charities’ compassion and care for the poor is a clear message that they are worthy of the dignity and respect we all deserve. Our determination to help them through their struggles provides the hope necessary to move beyond their crisis toward optimism of a better future.

Sowing Hope…In the community, people know they can count on Catholic Charities to help when no one else can. Public agencies, churches, and other non-profit private agencies refer families to Catholic Charities because they know we will do whatever is possible for us to help. Whether it’s the family who has nowhere to sleep for the night...or no food to get by until the next paycheck comes...or winter coats or shoes for the children...or a family in desperate need of professional counseling...Catholic Charities is there to help. That help comes directly from our donors.

I invite you to support our important and necessary work by choosing to become a “Sower of Hope”. You may also support our traditional “Acts of Kindness” or Higher Education Student Investment Program as described in this booklet.

GIVING HOPE contributions can be received by mail, phone transaction, or on our website.

We see the impact you make every day in the faces of countless seniors, children, parents, single adults, youth and others who are fiercely fighting against poverty month by month. Please remember that your financial support is 100% tax deductible and will help thousands of families take steps toward a better future.

It is your generosity that “Provides Help, Creates Hope” for those in our communities that need us most.

Peace and Blessings,

Ken F. Sawa, MSW, LCSW CEO/Executive Vice President

“Poverty calls us to sow hope...” ~ Pope Francis

Families that desperately need our services are abundantly blessed by the generosity of our donors. To better honor our most generous donors, we have developed a new designation of support titled SOWER OF HOPE.

SOWERS OF HOPE provide Catholic Charities with the bedrock of support that is needed in order for us to maintain and expand our vitally necessary services for the poor and those in crisis.

Though heavily restrictive, public funds make it possible for us to expand our reach and increase access to our help in the community. However, private contributions support very necessary interventions and special services that are not supported by public resources yet are most impactful for the families we serve.

Not alone but together, we can fight poverty and its consequences. The combination of Catholic Charities’ passion, determination, experience, and grit with the support of our SOWERS OF HOPE results in new opportunities and changed futures for those with the greatest needs among us.

Be a SOWER OF HOPE and share in our commitment of “Providing Help, Creating Hope” for families in desperate need with nowhere else to turn for help.

Life was hard, but Bob and Mary got by.

Throughout their 20+ years of marriage they

made a living for themselves and their six

children. Then suddenly their middle child,

16-year old Brian, was killed in a car accident.

The grief unraveled the delicately knit life Bob

and Mary had stitched together. She left. Bob,

a truck driver, was alone to care for the kids.

Work was slow, and he was laid off. Five

months later they were homeless.

Catholic Charities helped Bob’s family with

finding temporary shelter, safe housing, and

rental assistance. These funds are available

because our donors lovingly believe in the

care and action of Catholic Charities in the

community. Partner with us to help more

families like Bob and Mary’s.

“My life was like a dark and lonely tunnel.

But the kindness given to me and my

children through Catholic Charities was

a light. I now feel I have control over my

life and future for me and my kids.” ~ Bob

Facing daunting and unrelenting poverty causes extreme stress for a person and their loved ones. A simple Act of Kindness is received with overwhelming relief and gratitude. Acts of Kindness bring hope in times of despair.

Low-income families often times find themselves without food toward the end of the month. Your generosity will help us keep our food pantries full.

The worst case scenario for any family is a sudden death. Just imagine the dilemma for a family that is living week to week. We help families work through their grief and provide assistance for burial services.

For many young mothers, the cost of diapers is a very real problem when food, utilities, and rent must be paid. Providing diapers helps mothers make ends meet.

S H O E S F O R K I D S

Purchasing shoes is an expense that is often delayed in order to pay the bills. Children frequently wear shoes that don’t fit and/or are completely worn-out. Provide a pair of shoes for a child.

For families trying to make ends meet, food costs are the only expense they can cut back. Your gift will provide groceries for a poor family. They will receive a grocery store voucher to get through a tough time.

They say home is where the heart is, but for many of our families home may be the family car, an over-extended stay with friends or family, or a motel room in the worst part of town. Your generosity will help settle a family into a permanent and stable home.

Not having reliable transportation limits a family’s ability to maintain a job, attend school, and take care of typical family business. Your donation will help a family with transportation costs.

Our Administration Office is located in an extremely depressed area in the City of San Bernardino. Every Sunday morning, volunteers offer our neighbors and the local homeless a continental breakfast right here in our parking lot. Neighbor to Neighbor is a gathering spot where the coffee and respect flow freely for all.

Ruth and Carl both had stable jobs and

two toddlers, ages two and four. Carl was

injured at work and needed emergency

back surgery. Ruth had to take time off

from work without pay to care for him

and the children. Disability benefits were

slow to be approved, and meanwhile the

rent was due and there was no food in the

house. Ruth heard about Catholic Charities

from her employer at the school district.

Catholic Charities helped the family

with rent, groceries, and diapers for the

children.

Middle-income families are often one

crisis away from homelessness. We’re

here before it’s too late.

“I never thought this would happen to me. In the blink of an eye, I went from managing our expenses just fine to seriously needing help.” ~ Ruth

Courae“The fellowship program was my only opportunity in college to get real-world mentoring. Thankfully, with the scholarship program I won’t have too much debt when I graduate. I’m grateful for all that Catholic Charities has invested in me.” ~ Annie

Annie is keenly juggling full time graduate

school, work, and paying rent. She is passionate

about using her Masters in Social Work to make

a big impact in the lives of people. Through

her fellowship at Catholic Charities, Annie is

learning about nonprofit leadership beyond

what she learns in the classroom.

We are investing in the next generation

of social work leaders right here in our

community. Students from Cal State

University San Bernardino learn every aspect

of our organization including our heart for the

mission.
