Agape Food Bank is one of several programs that Catholic Charities of Central Florida operates in its Western
Region (Polk, Hardee, and Highland counties). Agape takes a multi-faceted approach to serving the community.
General Food Distribution
Manufacturers and distributors donate food products which are collected, stored, and passed along to member
agencies who feed the needy. The member agencies include 250 soup kitchens, churches, senior centers, and other
not-for-profits.
Community Food Drives
Businesses, clubs, schools, and individuals sponsor food drives that
supply hundreds of thousands of pounds of greatly needed food.
USDA Commodities
The U.S. Department of Agriculture buys food from farmers and makes
it available through Agape—which is the only USDA commodities
provider in the region. Agape is also the only agent in Polk County for
Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief program in the nation.
Mobile Pantries
Agape’s outreach efforts include “mobile pantries,” in which the food
bank loads a truck and goes to remote neighborhoods that have been
identified as high-need. These pantries occur at least once a month.
SmilePak
Begun in January 2012, SmilePak provides backpacks filled with food to
children who otherwise would not have enough to eat over the
weekend when school lunches are unavailable.
How to Help
Volunteers are an essential and vital arm of Agape, providing
tremendous contributions, such as:
Sorting donated food at the warehouse
Boxing donated food
Assisting at food shows
Sponsoring food drives
Distributing food at the monthly mobile food pantry
Providing office assistance
