The Emergency Family Assistance Program serves clients who are facing financial difficulties because of an unexpected financial emergency. The crisis generally involves the loss of job, medical expenses, major

car repairs, a family dissolution or unexpected expenses due to natural disasters or death in the family.

Service is By Appointment ONLY. This program is offered in all five regions served by Catholic Charities

of Central Florida.

The program provides financial assistance with rent/mortgage and/or utilities and a week’s worth of food.

The service is available to people in a planned, effective manner to help eliminate hunger and homelessness

and help families to gain self sufficiency.

Needs are assessed and coordinated by a Case Worker who will help the situation and process emergency

financial assistance, referrals, advocacy, food pantry distribution, and in some cases provide short-term

case management and benefits screening.

Long-term self-sufficiency is the goal; however, there is still an immediate need to help clients with

rent/mortgage payments to prevent eviction or assistance with a utility payment to prevent the

disconnection of services. The funds are used for rent and utilities payment program to assist clients.

Financial assistance is the most requested service in the community.

Agape Food Bank is one of several programs that Catholic Charities of Central Florida operates in its Western

Region (Polk, Hardee, and Highland counties). Agape takes a multi-faceted approach to serving the community.

General Food Distribution

Manufacturers and distributors donate food products which are collected, stored, and passed along to member

agencies who feed the needy. The member agencies include 250 soup kitchens, churches, senior centers, and other

not-for-profits.

Community Food Drives

Businesses, clubs, schools, and individuals sponsor food drives that

supply hundreds of thousands of pounds of greatly needed food.

USDA Commodities

The U.S. Department of Agriculture buys food from farmers and makes

it available through Agape—which is the only USDA commodities

provider in the region. Agape is also the only agent in Polk County for

Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief program in the nation.

Mobile Pantries

Agape’s outreach efforts include “mobile pantries,” in which the food

bank loads a truck and goes to remote neighborhoods that have been

identified as high-need. These pantries occur at least once a month.

SmilePak

Begun in January 2012, SmilePak provides backpacks filled with food to

children who otherwise would not have enough to eat over the

weekend when school lunches are unavailable.

How to Help

Volunteers are an essential and vital arm of Agape, providing

tremendous contributions, such as:

Sorting donated food at the warehouse

Boxing donated food

Assisting at food shows

Sponsoring food drives

Distributing food at the monthly mobile food pantry

Providing office assistance
