From the Rectory Holy Communion By Appointment Grace and peace to you from the priests of Nativity of Our Lord! As you may have heard, we have been hard at work exploring creative ways to offer the opportunity to receive Holy Communion safely during this challenging time of social distancing. First of all, please know that the annual “Easter Duty” of Catholics to receive the Eucharist once per year — and preferably during Eastertime — is not binding this year, due to our inability to offer public Masses. As such, Catholics have no obligation to receive Holy Communion before public Masses resume. Please also know that our good and gracious Father would never withhold his graces and blessings from us, even when — and perhaps even especially when — we are unable to receive Holy Communion sacramentally. Mysteriously, he always continues to provide for all of our spiritual needs. That said, we know that there is a great hunger for the Eucharist in our parish, and rightfully so. It is for that reason, along with a confidence in our ability to do so safely, that we are now distributing Communion during private appointments at the parish rectory, one household at a time, during the month of May. Scheduling Information Registered households can now sign up for one seven-minute time slot in the month of May between 4:30-5:30pm, Monday-Friday, preferably through our online form at www.signupgenius.com/go/Nativity_Communion (using access code 324). You can also call the parish office at (651) 696-5401 to request a timeslot, one per household — for these purposes, this means anyone living at the same address. If you are not yet registered as a parishioner, you can do so by contacting the parish office. To preserve the essential connection of Jesus’ Eucharistic presence to the sacrifice of the Mass, we encourage our First Communicants to wait until we can gather for public Mass to receive their First Holy Communion. Reception of Holy Communion A household should come to the front steps of the rectory (324 Prior Ave. S.) at their scheduled time. If another household is still at the door, please wait your turn on the sidewalk, maintaining at least six feet of space around you. When it is your household’s turn, come forward to the base of the rectory front steps. The priest will lead an Our Father or similar prayer from behind the glass front door. When it is time to receive Communion, each member of the household should go up the steps, one at a time. The priest will extend a gold paten through the door opening and say “The Body of Christ.”

Pastoral Care

End-of-Life Directives With the outbreak of COVID-19, the possibility of future medical care is on many of our minds. The importance of understanding the Church’s teaching on end-of-life care and ensuring your health care wishes are known is clearer than usual, but nonetheless will remain, regardless of an individual’s current state of health or future pandemics. If you need care, and a physician determines that you’re unable to communicate your health care wishes due to physical or mental incapacity, you want to ensure you’ve appointed an agent to speak on your behalf who understands Church teaching, and will respect your values and end-of-life wishes. The Minnesota Catholic Conference has created a health care directive for your easy use which allows you to appoint a health care agent, and also provides some informative answers to frequently asked questions. To learn more or to download the sample directive, visit www.mncatholic.org/advocacyarea/catholic-end-of-life-care-decisions/.

From the Rectory Holy Communion During the Month of May (Continued from previous page) Please reply “amen,” receive the Eucharist from the paten, and descend the steps. The priest will then purify and disinfect the paten and call forward the next member of the household. He will then close with a prayer and blessing from behind the glass door. Preparing to Receive Holy Communion If you are aware of any mortal sins you have committed since your last Confession, receive the sacrament of Reconciliation — which is now offered 9-10am on Saturday and Sunday at the rectory front door — before receiving Communion. Communicants must also be in doctrinal communion with the Catholic Church, i.e. assent to her core authentic teachings. (Wondering what that means? Start with the creeds. Then crack open the Catechism and/or call a priest!) Fast for at least an hour from food or beverage (except water) before receiving. You might consider viewing a live-streamed Mass or praying a rosary to prepare. Finally, please wash your hands well immediately before arriving. Feel free to use the restroom in Steiner Hall. Thank you for your patience as we devised a safe and practical plan for sacramental distribution of Holy Communion. And let us all pray together for the time to come quickly when we will all be able to receive the Eucharist together again under one roof. Until then, Fr. Patrick Hipwell and Fr. Nick Hagen

Adoration Organ Practice | Fridays, 12-3pm Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has been moved to the main church to allow social distancing of at least six feet, and must be limited to a maximum of ten people at a time. Please stagger your visits to avoid busy times. Because the main church needs to be locked overnight, the hours of Adoration are now restricted to 9am-10pm Sunday-Friday and 9am-4pm on Saturdays. Please note that our organist, Patrick Henning, often practices during the hours of 12-3pm on Fridays. During social distancing, all scheduled adorers should treat their assigned hour as completely optional. Above all, please do not come if you feel ill in any way, or if you are particularly at risk for the coronavirus. Contact Jim at (763) 746-8244 or [email protected] for more information.

Mass from Home Leaflet Missals + Holy Water Available for Pickup Stop by the church during Adoration (see hours below right) to pick up a Leaflet Missal (in the back of church) or a bottle of holy water in the front next to the ambo. Please take care not to touch anything except what you take. Thank you! Video Mass How-To Watching a video stream of Mass is new to most of us. Fr. Nick has some ideas on how to make the best out of an imperfect situation. Visit https://nativity-mn.org/online-liturgies to watch a video from him, as well as to find our upcoming live-streamed Masses and those already recorded. Live-streamed and archived Masses are also available on both our parish website homepage (https://nativity-mn.org/) as well as our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NativityStPaul/). Other Broadcasts Mass is also on Relevant Radio, 1330 AM on Sundays at 9am, with Daily Mass at 12pm. Sunday Mass is on local TV at 11am on KSTC-TV/45. Finally, EWTN (Comcast cable ch. 291) has daily Mass at 7am, 11am, 6pm, and 11pm, and is rebroadcast on channels 14.2, 14.4, and 14.5. Spiritual Communion Whenever anyone is unable to receive Holy Communion — for any number of reasons — we can make a “Spiritual Communion” by praying that Our Lord would come to us when we cannot receive him substantially. We pray this one during our online Masses:

Jesus, I believe you are truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist. I wish, my Lord, to receive you with the purity, humility, and devotion with which your most holy Mother received you, with the spirit and the fervor of the saints. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as being already there. Amen!

Archbishop Litany in Time of Need | Daily at 11:05am Archbishop Bernard Hebda asks the faithful of the Archdiocese — especially school students working from home — to set aside time every day to join together in offering the “Litany in Time of Need.” What a wonderful sign of unity to have us all praying together at the same time for protection and help! Please join him by tuning in to Relevant Radio 1330 AM, www.relevantradio.com, or the Relevant Radio App, where the Litany will be broadcast each day at 11:05am. Visit https://nativity-mn.org/news/litany-in-time-of-need for more information, including a downloadable PDF and a video from the Archbishop.

NCCW 2020 Spirit of Mary Award The Nativity Council of Catholic Women presents our 2020 Spirit of Mary Award. Each year, the NCCW recognizes an outstanding young woman who has demonstrated acts of faith, humility, generosity, and kindness through her school, parish, and community involvement. Female parishioners who are currently seniors in high school may apply or may be nominated. The award includes a cash prize designated to the recipient’s charity of choice and for her ongoing educational needs. Nomination forms are available on the NCCW website (www.NativityWomen.org), at the Parish Office, or by contacting Peggy Stang at [email protected]. Nominations are due by Friday, May 15. For more information, please contact Peggy at (651) 210-1752.

Teens Biggest Youth Night Ever | Sundays at 6:50pm This past Sunday night, our teens joined over 10,000 (!) other young people from across the country for an online youth night. We played games together, joined in worship together, learned from a brilliant Catholic speaker, and prayed together. This Sunday, we’re doing it again: new speaker, new worship leader, same time. Like last week, the broadcast starts at 7pm, but we plan to log in at 6:50pm to make sure we’re ready when it starts. And parents, if you’re not busy, you are invited to watch along with us — it’s worth it! Visit https://nativity-mn.org/youthministry for more information, including directions to join a video group chat with other Nativity teens. Or just contact Katie Schaitberger at [email protected] for the Zoom link. See you Sunday night!

We encourage you not to be afraid to ask even for the simplest items, including toilet paper! Also, if you don’t have family or friends who check in on you, or would just like a regular call from Nativity, please let us know. Remember that you are not alone! Jesus is so close to the ones who are suffering. Nativity staff is regularly monitoring both of these modes of communications, specifically devoted to your needs:

Online Giving Stewardship from Home Like many individuals, families, and organizations, this time has put a particular strain on our finances. We have had to make some tough decisions as we re-budget to best use our newly limited resources. And while we have made progress, we still have work to do to sustainably operate without a live Sunday collection. We know that many of you are similarly hurting or are otherwise financially vulnerable. However, for those of you who are able, please maintain or resume your usual giving, either by submitting it directly to the parish office or through our website at https://nativity-mn.org/online-giving. And, for those who have the means, please consider making a special emergency gift at this time. Please contact Joyce at the Parish Office at (651) 696-5436 if we can be of further assistance.
