Who can comprehend the Lord’s ways or

conceive what the Lord intends?

True wisdom leads us to acknowledge our

limitations (a matter of “calculation”)

and our idols of materialism as we seek to

follow the Lord without reservation.

True discipleship calls us to forgive those

who have wronged us. May we gain the

wisdom of heart to discern more fully our

call to take up the cross of Jesus.

Page 3: Catholic Church - Holy Trinity · 9:00 am Dcn. David Briselden 4:00 pm Christopher Babilonia 5:30 pm Christopher Babilonia ... Thelma Ortiz, Laurie Runyan, Taylor Rushin, Patti Shepard,

Of all the challenges Jesus presents to us in the gospels, today’s

challenge in Luke 14:25-33 probably is the most confronting

because it is very personal and is addressed to each of us individu-

ally. Jesus tells his disciples, the crowds following him and us, “If

anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and

children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be

my disciple.” And, “Whoever does not carry his own cross and

come after me cannot be my disciple.” To top it off we all are told,

“anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot

be my disciple.” We could rightly ask, what happened to the

gospel of love? Jesus tells us to love everyone and then he makes

a one hundred eighty degree turn and tells us to hate everyone!

I don’t think this is what Jesus is saying.

This is one of those readings that needs a little perspective. First,

we should remember the two great Commandments. The first great

commandment is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5: “Hear, O Israel!

The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love

the LORD, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole

being, and with your whole strength.” The second great command-

ment from Leviticus 19:18 is, “You shall love your neighbor as

yourself.” There is no reference to hate in either of these state-

ments.

St. Matthew’s version of the same New Testament story (Matthew

10:37-39) probably is more idiomatically correct, “Whoever loves

father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever

loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and who-

ever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of

me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life

for my sake will find it.” This isn’t about hating our families it is

about loving God first and foremost. Then everything falls into

place. As followers of Christ, we are called to follow him intre-

pidly. St. Paul tells us in 2 Cor 5:14-15, “For the love of Christ

impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for

all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those

who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for

their sake died and was raised.”

God our Father,

we have accepted your invitation

to follow your Son Jesus as his disciples.

Let your Spirit give us the wisdom and strength

to take our faith seriously

and to accept our task in life

with all its consequences.

Let the Spirit help us to go your Son’s way

without fear or discouragement,

for we are certain Jesus will lead us to you,

our loving God for ever and ever.

Amen.

Healing Masses: September 10, 6:30pm

and Friday, September 13, 12pm.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be

available during this Mass for every baptized Catholic

over the age of reason. Prayer teams will also be avail-

able immediately after Mass to pray with people for healing and

other needs.

Anointing of the sick primarily is for spiritual healing. Physical healing

might occur, but it is not the main purpose of the sacrament. Certainly the

sacrament should not be expected to automatically cure the sick person.

Such an expectation tends toward superstition (cf. CC2111). Baptized

children below the age of reason cannot commit personal sin and so do not

need anointing of the sick if they are in danger of death. Rather, when in

danger of death, such children can be given confirmation, for spiritual

strengthening and more fully to initiate them into the Christian religion.

Seniors Ministry Fall Col-

ors Trip. On Thursday,

October 17, join other sen-

iors for a day trip to

the winery). Bus will leave Holy Trinity’s side

parking lot at 7:45am and return by 6pm. The

cost is only $49 for the ride and lunch. Place you

check, in an envelope with your name and phone

number, in the black Parish Office mailbox in

Spirituality of Imperfection

(Fr. Francis Michael & Br. Michael)

The spirituality of imperfection speaks to those who seek meaning

in the absurd, peace within the chaos, light within the darkness, and

joy within the suffering, without denying the reality and even the

necessity of absurdity, chaos, darkness, and suffering. This is not

spirituality for the saints or the gods, but for people who suffer

from what the philosopher and psychologist William James called

“torn-to-pieces-hood.” We have all known that experience. To be

human is to feel, at times, divided, fractured, and pulled in a dozen

directions, and to yearn for serenity and some healing of our “torn-

to-pieces-hood.”

September 27-29 (Weekend)

Second Half of Life Can Be the Better Half

(Martha Gross)

Midlife begs the question, "Is there more to life than this?" This

retreat will help us recognize and respond to that deep but subtle

longing, and surrender to God's loving call -- a call into ordinary

life enriched with love, meaning, and purpose. It is never too late

to discover the "more" in life!

September 30 - October 3 (Midweek)

Too Deep for Words

(Br. Elias & Jacqueline Rychlicki)

In the teachings of Jesus, there are prayers, and then prayer---a si-

lent, loving communion with God beyond the senses, words or ritu-

als. We invite retreatants to learn prayer rooted in the Gospels---

ancient, proven ways for the most part unknown in our culture. The

theme of this retreat is the gradual unfolding of the divine image

within us into likeness. Participants will become familiar with the

use of the breath and imagination in prayer, and ways to develop

interior silence and stillness. We will also present practices to deal

with afflictive thoughts and feelings, and the incessant chatter and

commentaries inside us that prevent our going deeper into God. As

a final word, this retreat longs to help participants to become more

of what they already are, living flames of kindness and compassion.

11 Week BIBLE STUDY Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come

Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 PM Next Session September 11 Facilitator: Alec MacDougall

Suggested Dontation: $27/book

Unpack the Mysteries of Revelation Perhaps no book in the Bible fascinates people more than Revelation. Yet relatively few peo-ple have studied the book, especially from a Catholic perspective. This study shows how

the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the king-

dom of heaven. Presenter Jeff Cavins pulls back the veil on the rich symbolism present in

Revelation. Discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean and

see how Revelation is more than an apocalyp-tic vision of the “end times.” Explore the

Church’s teaching on the second coming of Christ and the Last Judgment. Understand how God, the Divine Bridegroom, and the

Church, his spotless bride, enter into a heav-enly, holy, and mystical marriage every time

we celebrate Mass.

Wednesday 10:00-12:00 PM (Begins September 18)

Facilitators: Howard Gault & Elliott Marsh

St. John Vianney Room Cost: $27/book You will learn:

The Catholic teaching on salvation.

How to explain salvation to non-Christians

What is required for salva-tion—faith or works

What Paul really means by “works” not leading to salvation

How Christ’s death changed our relationship with God

The meaning of the difficult passages in Romans

How we can enter more deeply into Christ

Dr. Swafford and Cavins explain that salvation is not

merely the removal of a guilty verdict. Salvation is about

entering into Christ’s life and death and sharing in his

eternal Sonship.

That Man is You (TMIY) Fridays 6:00-7:30 AM

St. Faustina Room

That Man is You! Is an oppor-tunity for fellowship for men and formation in the Catholic Faith. It honestly addresses the pressures and tempta-tions that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive!

Knowing the true answers to these ques-tions matters! There are very important - life-changing - reasons for everything we believe and do as Catholics! In Catholic 101 you will learn about these things so that you can, grow in your relationship with Christ through His Church, and effectively help others do the same. This Series will meet 1X/month, usually 4th week of the month. Each month we will present a different topic and there will be three sessions to choose from with the same presentation each time.

TOPIC FOR SEPTEMBER:

In a world grown hostile to God, it is more important than ever to be able to defend him. In this class you will learn how to answer the common objections of Atheism with sound philosophy and common sense.

This class will meet for 2 weeks. CHOOSE FROM: (same presentation each time)

Mondays, September 23 & 30, 11:30am-2:00pm

Tuesdays, September 24 & October 1, 10:00-12:30pm

Tuesdays, September 24 & October 1, 6:30-9:00pm

Location: St. John Vianney Room

This class seeks to present the case for why belief in God is plausible and reasonable from a nonreligious perspec-tive. If you are already a believer, this class will give you some reasons why that is the case. If you are not a believer, we would like to provide important infor-mation that supports belief in God, and shows that people of faith are not irration-al fools.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Why do we have a special day set aside to

commission catechists?

Catechesis is a distinct and special

ministry in the Church. As the

Catechism of the Catholic Church

makes clear, “Catechesis is

intimately bound up with the whole

of the Church’s life . . . her inner

growth and correspondence with

God’s plan depend essentially on

catechesis” (no. 7).

This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound

dignity, which is why catechists are recognized by the Church.

Additionally, we invite the entire church community to think about

our responsibility to share our faith with others.

Además invitamos a toda

la comunidad de la Iglesia a pensar en nuestra responsabilidad de

compartir nuestra fe con otros.
