Clothe A Child is a campaign to provide children living in poverty with a $100 gift card that will be used at Kohl’s on three Saturdays in October. It was started in 2003 to serve children in the Frisco ISD, and now it has expanded to serve children in ISDs of Little Elm, Prosper, and Celina. School counselors choose the families that are truly in need. Many churches and even some businesses participate, and St. Francis has been a leader in generosity and volunteers. Here is how it works: we donate funds, parishioners serve as volunteers. On one of the Saturdays in October, our parish volunteers join volunteers from other churches to meet at Kohl’s on Preston and Rolater at 5:30 am. Clothe a Child administrators have turned our donations into a $100 gift card that is entrusted to you. Families have been waiting outside from very early in the morning. Then a family is matched to a volunteer who then accompanies that family through the store and helps them select appropriate clothes for school. I always remember a line from a poem that I learned in high school over 50 years ago—“the gift without the giver is bare.” The beauty about this program is that you the volunteer have the joy of seeing the gift of our parish to be turned into clothes for a child whose families couldn’t afford that set of clothes. You get to be Santa Claus in October, and what a warm feeling you receive! So, we beg you to donate. Head over to the Parish Center and give whatever you can, but I hope you have the joy of donating $100 to Clothe A Child. I also beg you to offer your service as a volunteer; you can sign up for that also in the Parish Center, and later you will be trained in the process. Our goal is $35,000, but as of September 1, we have received only $7,700. So, you can see we really need your help. This Sunday and next Sunday are the last days to donate and to volunteer. Hurry! I will be heading out to the Men’s ACTS retreat in Spanish Thursday afternoon and will return Saturday afternoon. Please pray for our men and for me so that the Lord will touch our hearts.
