Living in the Holy Spirit
I’ve lived and worked within academic circles for most of my
adult life, studying in various universities, teaching within
university circles, and having university professors as close
friends and colleagues. What’s that world like? What kind of
folks inhabit academic circles?
Perhaps my experience is atypical because most of the scholars
under whom I studied and most of the theologians and other
scholars who have been my colleagues became professors and
university lecturers in function of ministry, as a vocation,
rather than as a career. Thus, instead of struggling with faith
and church, they were driven to become academics in function
of their faith and church commitments. In some ways,
professors in theology schools and schools of ministry aren’t
typical of academic circles.
But an academic is an academic and graduate and post-
graduate studies, whatever the motivation for doing them, have
some of the same effect on people. And so I suspect that the
circles I have been part of, in the end, are more typical than
atypical. And what is typical?
Academics, scholars, and university professors, like any
segment of society, are a complex mix: in university circles
you will find some of the most humble, gracious, faith-filled,
and genuinely good people you will ever meet; just as you will
also find some of the most arrogant, self-absorbed, amoral, and
cynical people in the world. The academic world looks like the
rest of the world.

Viviendo en el Espíritu Santo
He vivido y trabajado en círculos académicos la mayor parte
de mi vida adulta, estudiando en varias universidades,
enseñando dentro de círculos universitarios y teniendo
profesores universitarios como amigos y colegas cercanos.
¿Cómo es ese mundo? ¿Qué tipo de personas habitan en los
círculos académicos?
Quizás mi experiencia es diferente porque la mayoría de los
académicos con quien estudié y la mayoría de los teólogos y
otros académicos que han sido mis colegas se convirtieron en
profesores y profesores universitarios en función del
ministerio, como vocación y no como carrera. Por lo tanto, en
lugar de luchar con la fe y la iglesia, fueron impulsados a
convertirse en académicos en función de su fe y compromisos
de la iglesia. De alguna manera, los profesores de las escuelas
de teología y las escuelas de ministerio no son típicos de los
círculos académicos.
Pero un académico es académico y los estudios de la maestría
y el doctorado, cualquiera que sea la motivación para hacerlos,
tienen el mismo efecto en las personas. Y entonces creo que
los círculos de los que he formado, al final, son más típicos que

Dada esa verdad, durante mucho tiempo me ha perseguido un
dicho de Jesús de que los secretos profundos de la vida, y de la
fe, a menudo, están ocultos para los sabios y los inteligentes y,
en cambio, se revelan a los niños, a los de una mente menos
compleja. No dudo de la verdad de esto; Me pregunto porque.
Por qué? Claramente, la inteligencia y el aprendizaje son cosas

entrenados intelectualmente.
La inteligencia y el aprendizaje son cosas buenas. Dios no nos
dio inteligencia y luego nos pidió que no la usemos. La
ingenuidad no es una virtud y nunca debe confundirse con la
inocencia. Entonces, ¿por qué ser "inteligente y listo" es algo
que puede ir en contra de nuestra comprensión de los secretos
más profundos de la vida y la fe?
La falla no está en la inteligencia y el aprendizaje, ambas cosas
son buenas, sino en lo que inadvertidamente pueden hacernos.
La inteligencia y el aprendizaje a menudo tienen el efecto no
deseado de quebrantar lo que es infantil en nosotros, es decir, la
fuerza que aportan a nuestras vidas puede permitirnos reclamar
inconscientemente una superioridad y hacernos creer que, dada
nuestra inteligencia, tenemos la necesidad de ambos y el
derecho a aislarnos de los demás de manera que la necesidad
natural de los niños no les permita hacerlo. Los niños no son
autosuficientes aunque quieran serlo intensamente. Necesitan a
otros y lo saben. Por eso, se acercan más naturalmente y toman

Cuando somos "el estudioso y el inteligente", podemos olvidar
más fácilmente que necesitamos a otros y, por lo tanto, no
alcanzamos naturalmente la mano de otro como lo hace un
niño. Es más fácil para nosotros aislarnos. Cuando somos
menos conscientes de nuestra contingencia, perdemos más
fácilmente de vista de las cosas a las que Dios y la vida nos
están invitando. La misma fuerza que la inteligencia y el
aprendizaje aportan a nuestras vidas puede inculcarnos una
falsa sensación de autosuficiencia que puede hacernos querer
separarnos de otras maneras poco saludables de los demás y
entendernos de alguna manera como superiores. Y la
superioridad nunca entra sola en una habitación, sino que
siempre trae consigo a varios de sus hijos: arrogancia, desdén,
aburrimiento, cinismo. Todos estos son riesgos laborales para
los "sabios e inteligentes" y ninguno de estos ayuda a descubrir
ninguno de los secretos más profundos de la vida.
Pero debemos tener cuidado de no leer mal la lección. La fe no
nos pide que no estiremos nuestras mentes. Ni la ignorancia ni
la ingenuidad sirven a la fe. La fe no solo no teme a las
preguntas difíciles pero nos invita a hacerles. Las
profundidades del infinito nunca están amenazadas por la
inteligencia limitada. Entonces, nunca es malo ser estudioso y
ser sofisticado; solo es malo que nos quedemos allí. La tarea es
convertirse en pos-sofisticado, es decir, permanecer lleno de
inteligencia y aprendizaje incluso cuando volvemos a ponernos

Given that truth, I have long been haunted by a saying of Jesus
that the deep secrets of life, often times, and of faith are hidden
from the learned and the clever and revealed instead to
children, to those of a less-complex mind. I don’t doubt the
truth of this; I wonder why.
Why? Clearly intelligence and learning are good things.
Intelligence is the gift from God that sets us apart from animals
and access to learning is a precious right given us by God.
Indeed, ignorance and lack of education are things every
healthy society and every healthy individual strive to
overcome. Scripture praises both wisdom and intelligence and
the health of any church is partly predicated on having a
vigorous intellectual stream within it. Every time in history that
the church has let popular piety, however sincere, trump sound
theology it has paid a high price. The Reformation arose out of
just that and one of the first things that the Council of Trent
mandated for Roman Catholics was that its priests be better
trained intellectually.
Intelligence and learning are good things. God did not give us
intelligence and then ask us not to use it. Naiveté is not a virtue
and should never be confused with innocence. So why is being
“intelligent and clever” something that can work against our
understanding of the deeper secrets within life and faith?
The fault is not with intelligence and learning, both good things
in themselves, but in what they can inadvertently do to us.
Intelligence and learning often have the unintended effect of
undermining what’s childlike in us, that is, the very strength
that they bring into our lives can allow us to unconsciously
claim a superiority and have us believe that, given our
intelligence, we have both the need and the right to isolate
ourselves from others in ways that the natural neediness of
children does not permit them to do. Children are not self-
sufficient even though they fiercely want to be. They need
others and they know it. Consequently they more naturally
reach out and take someone’s hand. They don’t have the luxury
of self-sufficiency.
When we are the “learned and the clever” we can more easily
forget that we need others, and consequently don’t as naturally
reach for another’s hand as does a child. It’s easier for us to
isolate ourselves. When we are less aware of our contingency
we more easily lose sight of the things to which God and life
are inviting us. The very strength that intelligence and learning
bring into our lives can instill in us a false sense of self-
sufficiency that can make us want to separate ourselves in
unhealthy ways from others and understand ourselves as
superior in some way. And superiority never enters a room
alone, but always brings along a number of her children:
arrogance, disdain, boredom, cynicism. All of these are
occupational hazards for the “learned and the clever” and none
of these helps unlock any of life’s deep secrets.
But we must be careful not to misread the lesson. Faith doesn't
ask us not to stretch our minds. Neither ignorance nor naiveté
serve faith. Faith not only doesn’t fear the hard questions it
invites us to ask them. The depths of infinity are never
threatened by finite intelligence. And so it’s never a bad thing
to become learned and sophisticated; it’s only a bad thing is we
remain there. The task is to become post-sophisticated, that is,
to remain full of intelligence and learning even as we put on

Peace and all good!
I am writing to thank you for all of your prayers, presence
and support during these past six years that I have served
as the Vocation Director for our Our Lady of the Angels
Province. It has been a great ministry and an honor to
walk with many people in their discernment of God’s will
in their lives. During these years, 20 men were accepted
into the Formation program, of which 10 are still in the
program. All of these men have continued their
discernment of God’s direction in their lives. It is my hope
and prayer that once the restrictions on movement because
of the Coronavirus are lifted, that more visitation of
prospects can take place.
I am happy to announce that there is a “peaceful transition
in Washington” as our Vocation office has moved there
from Brooklyn, NY. The information regarding the

Le escribo para agradecerle por todas sus oraciones, presencia y
apoyo durante estos últimos seis años que he servido como
Director de Vocaciones para nuestra Provincia de Nuestra
Señora de los Ángeles. Ha sido un gran ministerio y un honor
caminar con muchas personas en su discernimiento de la

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing
every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were
made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global
spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your
healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their
strength and health through quality medical care.
Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working
together and neighbors from helping one another.
Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim
invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of
uncertainty and sorrow.
Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at
rest with you in your eternal peace.
Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As
they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair.
May they know your peace.
Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical
professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and
who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know
your protection and peace.
Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to
act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the
people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to
invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or
prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they
work together to achieve it on earth.
Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people
suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay
with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place
of our anxiety, give us your peace.
Jesus Christ, heal us.

Jesucristo, tú atravesaste pueblos y villas “curando toda dolencia
y toda enfermedad.” Por tu mandato, los enfermos fueron
curados. Acude a nuestra ayuda hoy, en medio de la propagación
global del coronavirus, para que podamos sentir tu amor
curativo.
Cura a todos los enfermos con el virus. Que puedan recuperar
sus fuerzas y sanar mediante un buen cuidado médico.
Sánanos de nuestros temores, los cuales no permiten que las
naciones trabajen unidas y que los vecinos se ayuden unos a
otros.
Cúranos de nuestro orgullo, el cual nos hace asumir
invulnerabilidad ante una enfermedad que no tiene límites.
Jesucristo, sanador de todo, acompáñanos en estos tiempos de
incertidumbre y pena.
Acompaña aquellos que han muerto por causa del virus. Que estén
descansando a tu lado en tu paz eterna.
Acompaña las familias de quienes están enfermos o que han
muerto. En medio de sus preocupaciones y penas, líbrales de
enfermedad y desesperación. Permíteles sentir tu paz.
Acompaña los doctores, enfermeras, investigadores y todos los
profesionales médicos que andan en búsqueda de sanar y ayudar a
los afectados, y que corren riesgos en el proceso. Permíteles sentir
tu protección y paz.
Acompaña los líderes de todas las naciones. Dales la visión para
actuar con amor, y un verdadero interés en el bienestar de la gente
que deben de servir. Dales la sabiduría para poder invertir en
soluciones de largo plazo que ayudarán a la preparación o
prevención de futuros brotes. Permíteles conocer tu paz en esta
tierra, mientras juntos trabajan para lograrlo.
Ya estemos en nuestras casas o en el extranjero, rodeados de
muchos o de unos pocos que sufren de esta enfermedad, Jesucristo,
acompáñanos mientras soportamos y lamentamos, persistimos y
nos preparamos. Sustituye nuestra ansiedad por tu paz.

Vivir la Liturgia — Inspiración de la Semana
La carne es nuestro viejo yo de ayer y el que dejamos atrás en el
bautismo. Es el yo de las dudas y los temores, el pecado y el error,
la renuencia, la pasión indomada y los errores de juicio. También
es el yo de las oportunidades perdidas y los caminos sin recorrer.
Aunque fuimos bautizados hace muchos años, cada día es otro día
para vivir, no según la carne de ayer con sus remordimientos y
recelos, sino para vivir la vida del espíritu de hoy y de mañana.
Las cargas de nuestro equipaje personal y de la vida misma
pueden pesarnos. El amor de Jesucristo y la vida del espíritu
pueden levantarnos, refrescarnos y brindarnos la esperanza de
nuevas oportunidades y descubrimientos. Debido a que hemos
sido bautizados en Cristo, no necesitamos estar ansiosos por lo
que hicimos o no hicimos ayer o ansiosos por lo que vendrá

The flesh is our old self of yesterday and the one we left behind
in baptism. It is the self of doubts and fears, sin and error,
reluctance, untamed passion, and errors in judgment. It is also

we were baptized many years ago, every day is another day to
live, not according to the flesh of yesterday with its regrets and
misgivings, but rather to live the life of the spirit of today and
tomorrow. The burdens of our personal baggage and of life
itself can weigh us down. The love of Jesus Christ and the life
of the spirit can pick us up, refresh us, and provide us with the
hope for new opportunities and discoveries. Because we have
been baptized in Christ, we need not be anxious about what we
did or did not do yesterday or anxious about what will come
tomorrow. We need only to seek out the love that is before us,

God in your Ordinary Moments
Faith Like a Child
If you Google Search recommendations
on how to raise generous children,
almost every list of ideas begins with —
or at least contains — the directive for
adults to be good models of generosity
themselves. Our children learn from our
actions much more than from our words.
Of course, when I think back over the
years while my children were growing
up, I think I may have learned as much
from them as they learned from me.
There is a time between early childhood
and middle school where a child seems
to be freer to give and share than at any
other time in life. It is around the age of
First Communion when the cries of
“mine” turn to laughter and smiles,
and the urge to be a part of something
bigger than oneself leads to sharing.
Before you know it, the child hits the
pre-teen years, and once again, he or she
becomes the center of the universe.
I believe that the previous paragraph is
all true, however, the stages described
seem to repeat themselves throughout
adulthood. Don’t you agree? Sometimes
we fall into seeing ourselves as the
center of the universe, or we become
consumed by our state in life or with
what we have acquired. Also, we at
times are generous and loving people. It
is sin that draws us back into ourselves
and away from any meaningful life of
stewardship and generosity. In order to
be freed for love, we need role models
to help us see what really matters. We
need to reflect on the example of many
of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
And, yes, we need to look to children
who may be at the point in their lives
where sharing is fun, and love is
something in abundance. —

nuestras acciones mucho más que de

pienso en los años mientras mis hijos
crecían, creo que aprendí tanto de ellos
como ellos aprendieron de mí. Hay un

escuela secundaria en el que un niño parece
