OUR SAINT PIUS X FESTIVAL WEEKEND “TO RESTORE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST”

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 21, 2011

Saint Pius X, the patron of our Community of Faith, is best known for his encouragement of the reception of Holy Communion, especially by children. He, in fact, extended the age for the reception to include young children, who had not yet been Confirmed. He was a man of humble origins. He was a humble man, who genuinely loved people and the God he served. He was embarrassed by some of the pomp of the Papal Office and saw it as a penance. Interested in politics, he encouraged Italian Catholics to become politically involved. He ended the supposed right by governments to interfere by veto in the papal elections, reducing the pressure that the conclave had experienced during his own election. He fought the attempts of governments to control the church, especially France and he worked for justice in the treatment of people. Pius X was attuned to the unhappiness of the world and the hardships of life at his time. He had a gentle heart which reached out to comfort and heal. Foreseeing World War I, when in the eleventh year of his reign, the war broke out, it led to his own death a few weeks after the war began. The motto of our patron is well known to all of us and a source of inspiration, "to restore all things in Christ." Today we honor, Joseph Sarto, Pope Pius X, one of the twentieth century's greatest popes. The Scriptures of this Sunday in Ordinary Time as we celebrate the Feast of our patron:

First Reading: Isaiah 22: 19-23 God places the key of David on the shoulders of Eliakim.

Second Reading: Romans 11: 33-36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To God be glory forever.

The Gospel: Matthew 13: 16-20 Peter is promised the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven by Jesus Some Special Reflections on this Feast of Saint Pius X, the successor to Peter: As we enter this new season of full activities, we of this Community of Faith have much reason to express our "Pride in Pius." The wonderful spirit and the great dedication of so many fine parishioners shines out like a beacon of light. This has created an increasingly more positive spirit here in the parish and a more positive approach to the creative and dynamic change that comes from "new blood" and a renewed enthusiasm. You can sense the "spark" and the genuine desire to "build for our future...renew our spirit....renew our worship space.” However, our most foundational renewal is in the Spirit. This can be sensed in the pride, in the positive outlook, and in the growing involvement by so many as well as our many new parishioners. "Be not afraid," the words of Jesus to all his disciples is a philosophy of encouragement and support. This is the sense that many of you tell me that you now have as together we build up this wonderful Community of Faith.

In the tradition of Saint Pius X, we are called to restore all things in Christ. It is not about "my ideas," "my committee," "my group." No, it is about us, the collective spirit of Saint Pius X. For some this has been a challenge. To share, to be open, to support, to look to the greater good, and to compromise, to work well with others, and not to always have your way, this is the Spirit of discipleship. This is the spirit of our patron, Saint Pius X; this is the spirit of our Community of Faith; and this is the spirit of the overwhelming majority of our people. This shuts out negativity, hostility, gossip, unbridled anger, and anything that attempts to destroy a sense of unity and service and wounds our collective soul.

The keys of Peter always fall heavily on his successors. The responsibility to exercise authority in a judicious and appropriate manner for the common good was difficult for Saint Pius and it is difficult for all of us who exercise, "the keys," that is the role of authority and decision-making. It never pleases everyone and it even sometimes causes hostility toward leaders by some, but it is always guided by the Spirit and in the spirit of loving service through difficult and often complex decision-making. Saint Pius X faced challenges and met them in the best way that he could with his talents and gifts. He was devoted to God and to God's People. He was broken-hearted with the start of World War I, which he could not prevent. Yet, he stood firm in his faith and his commitment to his death.

As we mark this celebration of the spirit of Saint Pius X, Joseph Sarto, we too, are called to "put on Christ," that is, to serve, to set aside anger and getting even when we can't have our way, to work for the common good and to grow individually and collectively in the spiritual life so that, we too, as partners in faith and disciples of Christ can help "to restore all things in Christ." Happy Feast Day! How blessed we all are in Christ and with one another.

Back to School: As our young people return to school our prayers and blessings go out to them and to their teachers. Tuesday we begin another year of school here at Saint Pius X, with a proud tradition of quality Catholic education. I am looking forward to this year as we celebrate our "Pride in Pius" and a special year of spiritual renewal. Welcome back to our staff, teachers, aides, support groups, and most especially our students. Opening School Mass: This Wednesday, August 24, we celebrate our renewal in the Spirit with our opening school Mass. Join us for the special blessings of the holy Mass as we come together to begin our school year. The parish and school staffs, the School Board, and our students will all take part along with parents and other parishioners. May we be blessed under the patronage of Pope Pius X, our patron, and Mary Immaculate Queen. Welcome back: Ryan Rump, our Director of Music Ministry, returns this weekend after another successful music camp in New Hampshire. Thanks to Kevin Zehme, a parishioner, for his wonderful music ministry in Ryan's absence. He will continue as part of our music ministry. Thanks also to Bill Buhr, another gifted musician and parishioner, for his assistance. We are blessed with so many gifted and sharing individuals in our music ministry. Welcome back Ryan and thanks Kevin. New Roman Missal: Ryan and the music team have chosen three new Mass settings for the New Roman Missal. We will now begin learning the new settings. We will also have additional worship aides to assist you in the revised texts for the Mass. The Sacramentary now used will be obsolete. We will also have to replace the Gather Hymnals. We will most likely choose a missalette for the transition, while we develop the new liturgy as promulgated by Pope Benedict XIV. We have special booklets for grades 3 to 7 to teach the changes to our children. Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children: These have been approved as a supplement to the Roman Missal until such time as new texts are approved by the Bishops. However the words of consecration will be revised in the text to match the revised translation of the consecration for the other Eucharistic Prayers. The Collection of the Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be updated to reflect the revised prayers in the Mass. The Festival of Pius X: As we mark the Feast of Saint Pius X this weekend, I ask that the blessings and intercession of Saint Pius X be on us as we build our "Pride in Pius" and begin a year of spiritual renewal "to restore all things in Christ." This will be an exciting year of prayer, renewal, and community building. Saint Peregrine: We will soon begin the novena to Saint Peregrine, the patron of cancer. This will begin as the fall begins and become part of our year of growing in the Spirit. More details will follow in the coming weeks. Fall Fest: Mark your calendars now as we prepare for our Annual Fall Fest, October 7-9. This will include many new activities and the outdoor Polka Mass at 11:00 am on October 9. Thanks to the committee which has been meeting throughout the year in preparation. Wishing you prayers and Blessings as we begin another year of activities, +Peace in Christ and the Spirit Father Tom Corbino

DEACON SPEAKIN’

The pro-choice (pro-abortion) advocate often argues that the embryo is NOT a human being, but rather just a small, microscopic collection of cells, totally undeveloped, existing only in the womb, and totally dependent on the mother for its existence and continued growth and development. In spite of this, embryology textbook authors Keith L. Moore and T.V.N. Persaud write, “A zygote is the beginning of a new human being.” Abortion ends the life of a zygote, abortion ends the life of a new human being.

A battle against Truth cannot be sustained.

Klusendorf, Scott. The Case for Life. Crossway, Wheaton, IL 2009

Questions, questions, questions! How many questions do we answer on a daily basis? How many do we answer routinely, and how many do we really think about before we answer them? How many do we ask? The dictionary defines the word “question” as “an expression of inquiry that invites or calls for a reply.” As a result, certain questions are capable of changing lives and should be respected. For example consider the life-changing ramifications of your answer to the following questions: Do you take this person to be your husband / wife? Do you want this job? Do you want to have a child? Are you willing to risk this experimental surgery? Do you want to buy this house? Do you want to do this if it means you can go to jail? Do you want to do this even though you know it is a mortal sin? Can you forgive me? Can you forgive your parents? Can you forgive yourself? Your answer to any of these questions will move your life in one direction, instead of another. Are you ready for the consequences? In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples one of those life changing questions. “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” We are told that they responded with a number of answers. After that, Jesus got more personal and asked “But who do YOU say that I am?” Peter was the first to respond to Jesus. He also had the right answer, and it changed his life forever. Jesus asked this question of His disciples. We are His disciples. Jesus is asking us, just as He asked the disciples that were with Him, “who do YOU say that I am?” His question, like the dictionary definition, calls for a reply. His question is asking US for a response of our minds, our hearts and our spirits. We should not answer this question without some thought. If we can truly say to our Lord, as Peter did, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, and truly believe what we are saying, with our minds, our hearts and our spirits, we too will be changed forever. We will have our names changed to “rock.” We will be the “rock” on whom the future of the Church will depend. Our belief, and the life we live because of the deep belief will be a rock to our children, to our friends, to our neighbors. We can share the good news that we know. We will be the light, and the salt, and others will be attracted to the Son of God, and the church will grow. Questions, questions, questions. Jesus is asking you, “who do YOU say that I am?” Respect the question, be careful with the answer. Deacon Tom www.stpiuslombard.org

The Liturgy of the Eucharist On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we explore the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We begin by preparing the altar for the holy sacrifice to come. In the Prayer over

the Gifts we get ready to offer ourselves and our lives together with the bread and wine so that we too might be transformed by God. In the Preface Dialogue we declare that it is right and just to give thanks to the Lord our God, and in the Preface we proclaim the reasons that we give God our thanks and praise. Then comes the great Eucharistic Prayer by which we render our thanks and praise to God the Father. As we recall what Jesus said and we do what he did at the Last Supper, God transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, and we pray that we will also be transformed by the Eucharist we celebrate and receive. We ratify this wonderful action with the Great Amen, and prepare for the culmination of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in Holy Communion.

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS

Liturgy of the Word for Children… Will resume on Sunday, September 11, at 9:30 am Mass! Children ages 3 to Third Grade are welcome during 9:30 Mass to worship. As always, adult volunteers are needed. Please contact Beth Tortorici, 630-627-6288, with any questions.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Catholic Charities, coordinator of the DuPage County Back to School Fair, would like to thank everyone for helping make this year's Fair at the County Fairgrounds such a wonderful success. Through the generosity of your parish collection and many individual donors, we were able to welcome over 1200 low-income families living in our County. Your generosity of time and resources ensured a happy and healthy return to school this fall for many of our client families. God bless you for your generosity!

AUGUST IS CATHOLIC CHARITIES MONTH

For nearly 50 years Catholic Charities has been helping the people of the Diocese of Joliet. We have taken the words of Matthew’s Gospel to heart as they have fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, cared for the sick, and embraced children who have been abused and neglected. In the past few years Catholic Charities has seen increased numbers of people in need asking for help. Last year we helped 73,000 people – 30% more than the year before. Many of these families have struggled with unemployment, losing their homes, and their dignity. We are called to help the poor and the vulnerable among us and while many of you may be struggling with needs of your own, I ask that you consider reaching out to help one of your brothers and sisters. No gift is too small, and all will be appreciated. You can make your gift online at www.cc-doj.org or send it to 203 N. Ottawa Street, Joliet, IL 60432. All gifts will be restricted to the county in which you live. Please pray for Catholic Charities, and know that we are praying for you too.

L.O.S.S. 10-Session Group Forming The L.O.S.S. (Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide) Program, facilitated by Catholic Charities, provides support and services to those who are grieving a death by suicide of a family member or close friend. Eight weekly sessions and two monthly follow-up meetings for those grieving the death of a loved one will be offered. Meetings will be held on Thursdays, September 15th through November 17th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1501 Boughton Road in Bolingbrook.
