The Centre holds

The gospel presents Jesus as the guide in life, the ‘way, truth and life’. The Christian centre is the person of Christ. Our work for Jesus and our love for people, no matter what our calling in life, flow from this. Mother Teresa was once asked why she did what she did, and she simply said ‘for Jesus’. This centre always holds, it cannot be unhinged. It is a deeply personal relationship: we are led by Jesus ‘one by one’, known by name, not as one of a group. We follow him as one we know, not a stranger.

We study his life and times, getting to know the places and events of his life, we become familiar with the gospels and get to know him in the heart. Prayer is the way of keeping our centre of conviction and motivation strong. Freedom grows and we begin to find him everywhere.

Different types of people and spirituality stress different aspects of Jesus. The Eastern approach to Jesus is very much the ‘way’; while the African is the ‘life’. The European stress is the ‘truth’. In Europe we need to rediscover also the joy and vibrancy of the African and Latin American expressions of faith, and also the presence of God in all life’ s moods and journeys of the Indian and Eastern traditions. We can get so caught up in small or even big truths and doctrines that we miss other centres of faith. All faith needs the balanced approach to Jesus – way, truth and life. Recall people who guided you well in your life. Pray for them.

PRAY THE ROSARY IN MAY

Pope Francis invites us to pray the Rosary during the month of May. He has written some prayers for the intercession of Mary, to be used as stand-alone prayers or prayed at the end of the Rosary.

Pope Francis’s invitation letter and the extra prayers can be found on the 5th page of this bulletin.

SUNDAY READINGS

Attached to this bulletin are the Sunday Readings for this weekend. The parish thanks Liturgy Brisbane for providing these prayers each week.

PRINTED PARISH BULLETINS AND WEEKLY READINGS

Our kind volunteers have been helping keep the residents of our local nursing homes up to date and connected by delivering printed copies of the Bulletin as well as the Sunday Prayers. “Social distancing” has not only made it harder for people to go out of their homes, but we can often “lose track” of people as we are ourselves limited as well. If you are aware of a neighbour, friend or member of the community that may be experiencing isolation, or you have an idea for reaching out that you’d like to share, please let the Parish Office know. Also, if you’ve been doing something good in your local community and you think it could act as an inspiration and example for others to follow, you can submit what you’ve done to the Archdiocese “Small Blessings” campaign. http://smallblessings.com.au/. Pope Francis reminds us - “Rivers do not drink their own water … and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” – Pope Francis

HEART TO HEART E-SEMINARS (around 30

During these unprecedented times, the Catholic

Leader is making the digital version of their newspaper available for free on their website. http://catholicleader.com.au

In the midst of isolation when we are suffering from a lack of tenderness and chances to meet up, and we experience the loss of so many things, let us once again listen to the proclamation that saves us: Christ is risen and is living by our side.

WHEN WILL THE CHURCH REOPEN?

Our diocese is in regular contact with the Queensland Government on the progress of COVID-19 and what the best way forward might be. It is still a difficult and complex decision. Our government is also under great pressure, balancing their obligations of ensuring public health and safety, against the need to return back to our regular way of life.

There is as yet, no known date or timeframe as to when the resumption of public worship will occur, but it is likely to happen in stages. A first stage will be the opening of churches for private prayer at set times, with various safeguarding precautions in place. Thereafter, the public masses may resume, but in smaller groups, again with precautionary measures in place.

In the meantime, everyone is encouraged to pray, especially praying together with family.

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS

to the Faithful for the Month of May 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

Rome, Saint John Lateran, 25 April 2020

On the Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist

First Prayer

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith. “Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Page 7: CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PINE RIVERS · 2020-05-08 · CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PINE RIVERS 102 Sparkes Rd, Bray Park Q 4500 (PO Box 176 Strathpine Q 4500)

Second Prayer

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realise that we are all members of one great family and to recognise the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

b Tuum Praesidium (We Fly to Thy Patronage)

An ancient hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the oldest known version discovered so far, written ion

Greek on Egyptian papyrus dated approximately 250 AD. This prayer is used in Litanies to the Blessed

Mother and as a concluding prayer to Compline (Evening Prayer of the Church – Roman and Byzantine

liturgies). It is also used by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the Jesuits and the Marists religious

congregations.

Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix; Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus nostris, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen.
