    22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus knew that he would face the cross. Like Jesus life will bring us to difficult places and we will face obstacles. Some-times on our path of discipleship the obstacles are within us: I’m not gifted; I don’t have the time; I am homebound. Sometimes the cross we are asked to carry is very near to us: praying for someone who annoys us; taking the time to recy-cle; finding and buying fair trade products; learning about Church teaching on an issue that troubles us. What cross is yours to carry this week?

Cedarbrake Catholic Retreat Center in Belton (254)780-2436 www.cedarbrake.org

[email protected] Hearing the Voice of God—September 18 Listening to the Voice of God Retreat will be at St. Mary’s in Waco, TX. Grow in a deeper relationship with God by learning how the Lord speaks to us in our everyday life. Franciscan Fa-ther Albert Haase, OFM, will present this day based on his best-selling book entitled, SAY ING Y ES; Discovering and Respond-ing to God’s Will in Your Life. For more information contact Cedarbrake at (254) 780-2436 or visit www.cedarbrake.org The Shepherd Who Didn’t Run—Sept. 29– Oct. 1 Father Stanley Rother died a martyr on July 28, 1981, in a Gua-temalan village where he ministered to the poor. His life re-mains a testament to the difference one person makes. Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda, author of the award-winning official biog-raphy of this American martyr, will present this weekend re-treat. She will highlight five personal qualities Father Stanley proclaimed with his life. For more information contact Cedar-brake at (254) 780-2436 or visit www.cedarbrake.org 100 Years, Our Lady of Fatima– October 13 In the spring of 1917, three children reported a vision of a beau-tiful lady in Fatima, Portugal. The last time the Blessed Mother appeared to them was Oct. 13, 1917. Her message continues to be one of prayer, especially, praying the rosary for peace. Brian Egan, Beverly Collin and Deacon Klaus Adam will lead the day of prayer in honor of the 100th anniversary of Fatima. For more information contact Cedarbrake at (254) 780-2436 or visit www.cedarbrake.org Nurturing the Pilgrim Heart—November 3-5 By our vocation as Christians, we are called to follow Jesus, to live as he lived, to love as he loved, to be part of the mission he inaugurated. Responding to that call takes us on a journey which will reconfigure our priorities and redirect our approach to life. It will transform our heart so we will find rest only in God. Incorporating the wisdom of Scripture and the insight of St. John of the Cross, this weekend retreat will focus on nurtur-ing a pilgrim heart. The weekend will be led by Holy Cross Brother Joel Giallanza. For more information contact Cedar-brake at (254) 780-2436 or visit www.cedarbrake.org.

Message from Bishop Vasquez & Auxiliary Bishop Garcia Together with our brother bishops, we urge all people of good will to be united with those suffering as a result of the cata-strophic damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. We are deeply concerned about the parishes, communities and people that have been and will continue to be impacted by the storm. We urge all people to continue to follow the safety directives of the local emergency management officials. ...Some victims will feel the long-term effects of the storm system for years to come. We encourage the faithful of the Diocese of Austin to be spirit-ually united with the communities affected through prayer and support. Because we believe that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress” (Psalm 46: 1), our neighbors require our resolve to help them in their time of need. Considering the unprecedented flooding and the disheartening circumstances in which our brothers and sisters find them-selves, we are reminded that Jesus requires us to help our neigh-bors out of mercy and love (cf Luke 10: 29-37).

Special collection today At the request of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, all parishes in the Diocese of Austin are to take up a special collec-tion for those affected by Hurricane Harvey this weekend to assist those affected by the hurricane.

How to Help Catholic Charities of Central Texas is coordinating our diocesan relief efforts for families impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We encourage you to visit www.ccctx.org for more information on how to offer help and to provide assistance for the victims of the storm. If you have been affected by floods, call the Disaster Re-sponse Hotline (512) 766-7111 or email [email protected].
