DEAR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS, High school is a place where people will likely meet their best friends, get an idea of what they want to do with their lives, and most importantly, enjoy their last 3 years of childhood! That being said, there is no place better then FX when it comes to enjoying a safe, caring, and fun environment for which students learn and grow. Between all of our clubs, sports teams, academies, and classes, there is something for everyone, and you can do whatever your heart desires. To elaborate on this, I would like to share a story, my story. When I came to FX, I chose the “AP scholar” approach to high school; I filled my schedule with AP and honours courses, and although it was challenging, it was equally as rewarding, but ultimately that approach was not for me. In grade 11 I changed my courses from AP to the 20-1, 20-2 stream and joined the Golf Academy (which I definitely recommend)! this whole process was made easy and it was explained to me every step of the way by our excellent grade coordinators and teachers. In grade 12 I stopped taking golf Academy and I decided to get more involved with clubs such as Xavier Executive, FX rocks, and my favourite, Ping Pong Club!

The moral of the story is that when you come to FX, you can be whoever you want to be; and the teachers, students, and administration will support you every step of the way! Also, you have the ability and the freedom to change aspects of YOUR education to suit YOUR needs. We offer such amazing classes, clubs, academies, and sports teams, as long as you are willing to try new things and meet new people, I can personally guarantee you will love FX!

I’m looking forward to meeting you at the open house on march 6th, and adding another Ram to the Herd!

Caiden Masterson

Xavier Executive is St. Francis Xavier’s student leadership group. Xavier Executive works to build community, school spirit, and FUN! Throughout the year, we plan pep rallies, intramurals, major events around Halloween and Christmas, and theme days, such as Touch of Class and Jersey Day. Driven by our school’s motto ‘Caritas Christi’ our Executive chose the theme ‘Branch Out’. We take care of our school community and then branch out to the local community, as well as the global community through our major school-wide Bike-a-Thon fundraising that raises money for Sign of Hope and Dreams for Kids charities. Xavier Executive is an inclusive group that welcomes involvement and participation from students all year. Getting involved with Xavier Executive builds new friendships and creates memories you will look back on for a lifetime. Students can take the lead by running and organizing events, or develop leadership skills by helping with events behind the scenes, or students can simply be a supporter and stay up-to-date with events that are happening in the school. Students can stay connected with Xavier Executive on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

Our Learning Centre is a comfortable, quiet study space that enhances our school’s philosophy of a flexible learning environment. Some of the enhancements the centre offers:

• Access to alternative course delivery either through Revelation Online, module based delivery (limited), and courses offered independently at St. Francis Xavier High School.

• Exam Centre: On Friday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 PM the Learning Center is used as an exam center. Students have the opportunity to make up an exam that they have missed the previous week. This way students do not have to miss valuable instruction time to make up any missed assessments.

At St. Francis Xavier, students have been afforded the opportunity to take control of their learning through a period of time prior to their lunch break. During this 40-minute Flex block which runs Monday to Thursday, students are involved in exam preparation, homework review, tutorials, and catching up on missed assignments or evaluations. Information sessions regarding Post-Secondary, Scholarships, and much more are also offered.

Teachers are available for students to access during this time, and are often busy interacting with students either one on one or in larger groups. Positive feedback from our students has been tremendous. Students have control over where they want to be and for how long. Students who have missed school for illness or any other reason are finding it easier to catch up and get back on pace with their classes. Students who also require more time to be spent on a certain subject can choose to spend more of their Flex time in that area.

St. Francis Xavier has a proud tradition of giving back to the community. We have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities with one of our proudest moments being FX House and the FX Bike-a-thon. FX House was a project funded through Habitat for Humanity. Our students not only donated and fundraised for this project but also wore hard hats and safety glasses to participate in the building experience. The FX Bike-a-thon is a 24 hour non-stop bike bike riding event where teams of 6 riders found sponsors and rode their way to collecting funds for the Sign of Hope Campaign. We appreciate the FX Rocks committee at the school that is the arm of our social justice projects and we are excited about new school initiatives that will have our students focus on needs both locally and globally.

Social Studies provides opportunities for students to develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will enable them to become engaged, active, informed, and responsible citizens. It is an issues-focused and inquiry-based interdisciplinary subject that draws upon history, geography, ecology, economics, law, philosophy, political science, and other social science disciplines. It fosters students’ understanding of, and involvement in, practical and ethical issues that face their communities and humankind. Ultimately, Social Studies is integral to the process of enabling students to develop an understanding of who they are, what they want to become, and how to improve the society they want to live in.

For the 2018-2019 school year, St. Francis Xavier will be offering advanced placement courses in the following areas:

AP English Language and Composition, AP Calculus AB, AP Physics 1, and AP Biology. In addition, students may also take advantage of non-traditional Advanced Placement opportunities; these include completing AP Statistics, AP European History, AP Psychology, and AP Environmental Science through online learning with access to AP teachers through Revelation Online service. Students may also challenge a series of AP exams for credit and/or Advanced Placement; these exams include: Music Theory, French Language, Spanish Language, Italian Language, Japanese Language, and Chinese Language and Culture.

Successful performance on AP exams may also result in exciting scholarship opportunities. RAP PROGRAM AND WORK EXPERIENCE

The Registered Apprenticeship Program(RAP) starts in high school for students who are interested in dividing their time between academics and earning hours towards an apprenticeship in a trade. Students will complete a high school diploma while accumulating hours towards a journeyman ticket. RAP students are paid for the work they do while registered in this program.

WORK EXPERIENCE

St. Francis Xavier High School encourages students to investigate career opportunities and pursue interests using a ‘hands-on’ approach. Work Experience is comprised of separate courses for credit that provide learning activities undertaken by a student as part of a planned academic program under the cooperative supervision of a teacher-coordinator and employer.
